I absolutely love the group phase, especially the first 8 days with 4 matches each day. We also get to see some teams that we only get to watch every 4 years, it's so fun! Can't wait for the next one, and if Romania somehow manages to qualify I might have to go watch the games live :o

And as the game the game against morocco proved even having an excellent coaching team as Argentina does isn't enough to bridge the gap caused by difference in quality of the players. So as much as i would love to see Messi win the wc the most likely scenario would be a 2-1 for france or 3-1 if Argentina is unlucky. Unless they somehow manage to score the first goal and play as well as they did in the second half against Croatia i don't see them winning. Actually Argentina usually loves having the ball- in the Copa, in qualifying, and in the WC. The only exceptions were against Netherlands and Croatia. They completely changed vs Croatia and became a counter attacking team.

So many brave people predicting high scores?!? The reality is that World Cup Finals have been an absolute dour affair for my entire living memory except for the last World Cup. Tournament after tournament, we've seen either 0-0 or 1-1 going to penalty shootout, or someone scores a goal only minutes away from penalties to make it 1-0. It has in fact been the norm that Third Place playoffs are 'fun' to watch because nothing is on the line, whereas Finals are played ultra-conservatively. But of course, with France and its attacking machine, I can understand higher scores. I'd love to see a high scoring game but am also sure the last one was an exception.

If you only count goals from field play, Argentina has only scored 9 to France's 13. 4 penalties called for Argentina in 6 matches (!), one of which they missed. If France can keep from getting trapped and committing a foul in the box, they will win.

England and Morocco have been better then Netherlands and Croatia in this tournament. Morocco didn’t allow a goal from the opposition, only an OG. As for the Croatian game, the reality is that they haven't scored much against worthy components, and four of their goals were against Canada. The Croatian team in 2018 with Rakitic and Mandzhukic was much better at scoring goals. I'm not sure an easy win against Croatia which needed penalties to beat Japan was a stern examination of Argentina's defense. France is a completely different matter... Sudden death penalties have been surprisingly rare at World Cups. I think it has only ever been used twice in the entire history of the tournament, which is incredible consider how many knockout matches there are per tournament. I do NOT recall even watching a single World Cup match that went to sudden death penalties.

By allowing other team to have possession, players like wing backs get high up the pitch to overload the flanks. This often results in space in the wide areas and only 2-3players back to defend. France did this versus Morocco and England. So Argentina will have to take advantage of the possession and break down the defense and be clinical with finishing while not allowing counterattack opportunities down the left for Mbappe or right for Dembele.

Honestly, I think you eloquently state your predictions and appreciate your seemingly objective points--even if you would have predicted FRA. I think in the end, you seem to be mostly agreeing with the rest of the predictions--that it's fairly "50-50". As an Argie, however, I will say that--as painful as it would be have seen BRA win--it was just as painful watching them go down in this one, with the way they did. Watching PSG a lot last year, I like Neymar, and I've grown to like Richarlson a lot since COPA (and who can't love Ronaldhino lol). So seeing them go so to such a "high" vs CRO, and then so quickly low soon thereafter, wasn't fun to watch, even for me.
I think I softened up on BRA ever since 2014. Still, for obvious reasons I wanted the BRA vs ARG semifinal this time, as most of the world did, too (and as worrisome that also could have been), but seeing now the overwhelming BRA support for Messi (even my BRA sister in law wants him to raise that trophy) it really makes [me] see BRA in a different fashion now. I know not all of them, and I don't blame them. For me, dare i say, I may be even more of a "Messi" fan than ARG itself--as I find myself screaming with joy when ARG scores, but I'm in tears when Messi scores. Interesting. Things seem to have changed since the 80s and 90s...for me anyway! I'm just so happy, and the team seems to want this more for him than for the nation itself (but maybe I'm wrong). So many brave people predicting high scores?!? The reality is that World Cup Finals have been an absolute dour affair for my entire living memory except for the last World Cup. Tournament after tournament, we've seen either 0-0 or 1-1 going to penalty shootout, or someone scores a goal only minutes away from penalties to make it 1-0. It has in fact been the norm that Third Place playoffs are 'fun' to watch because nothing is on the line, whereas Finals are played ultra-conservatively. But of course, with France and its attacking machine, I can understand higher scores. I'd love to see a high scoring game but am also sure the last one was an exception.

Yes could be 3-2 for Argentina even if LOGIC says that 3-2 for FRANCE is more likely. Penalty kicks (or an Exciting OT win for one of the 2 could happen as well). Too close to call IMHO, should be a great match, so watch and enjoy! On the individual side...will Mbappe match Pele with 2 WC by age 22 or will Messi finally get a WC? As for Morocco and Croatia, obviously Morocco the CINDERELLA TEAM, Croatia's ERA of Magical Modric ending, so they play for 3rd and "Championship of Group F's "Group of Death"! They tied 0-0 at the Group Stage so this should be close and low scoring, but you never know, could also flip-flop to a higher scoring match if they are both relaxed now and go all out offensively!

France has scored 13 goals to Argentina's 12 in 6 matches. If you only count goals from field play, Argentina has only scored 9 to France's 13. 4 penalties called for Argentina in 6 matches (!), one of which they missed. If France can keep from getting trapped and committing a foul in the box, they will win.
I did some analysis too, what you think about the fact that 3rd place winners tend to have lost to the eventual winners of the WC for the last 7 or more WCs? like if Croatia beat Morocco Argentina would win

the truth is that you can not win such tournament by showing beautiful skills and Brasil is the clear proof of that. Exactly. I am not sure how much confidence I give to Argentina's defense. They nearly let Australia equalise, and against the Dutch, they managed to let them back in after being up 2-0. As for the Croatian game, the reality is that they haven't scored much against worthy components, and four of their goals were against Canada. The Croatian team in 2018 with Rakitic and Mandzhukic was much better at scoring goals. I'm not sure an easy win against Croatia which needed penalties to beat Japan was a stern examination of Argentina's defense. France is a completely different matter... That said, I want Argentina to win because four cups to Europe should be enough. South America should get one back.

Sudden death penalties have been surprisingly rare at World Cups. I think it has only ever been used twice in the entire history of the tournament, which is incredible consider how many knockout matches there are per tournament. I do NOT recall even watching a single World Cup match that went to sudden death penalties.

Allowing the other team to have the ball openis up space for counterattacking football. By allowing other team to have possession, players like wing backs get high up the pitch to overload the flanks. This often results in space in the wide areas and only 2-3players back to defend. France did this versus Morocco and England. So Argentina will have to take advantage of the possession and break down the defense and be clinical with finishing while not allowing counterattack opportunities down the left for Mbappe or right for Dembele.
Grieseman is an intelligent footballer n much better than he was in 2018 ! But the Argentina midfielders will likely close in on him while look out for gaps in the right flank of the French defence ....Messi will change the shape n form of the match if he is given room plus any magical moments, Alvarez always to finish any chance given to him !
