  • Day in my life as a History PhD Student | Grad Vlog
    Today's vlog features lots of readings, cold weather, and yoga!
    Hello friends! If you are new here, my name is Katherine and I am a second year PhD student studying history at the Ohio State University! I am a cultural historian of war, and my area of focus is France during WWI.

    Hey Katherine! I think it would be great if you could make a sit down video once you finish your generals in April. It'd be great to hear about the process (preparing and taking) but also your experience in general :)

      I definitely am planning on doing this when all is said in done! I feel like I still have yet to see too many people talk about what it is actually like, so I'd love to do a sit down video about this.

    Thanks for this video! I actually found you because I'm a PhD candidate in the humanities (theatre studies), too and wanted to make my own "day in the life" video! It seems like so many PhD youtubers are in the sciences, so it's nice to see someone else in humanities :) Now subscribed!

    The cold is brutal here in Fargo, ND. The coldest morning we've had so far is wind chills near -50 F LOL. It was so cold they canceled k-12 school. Most of the other Ph.D students in the emergency management department are international students from "warm" countries (Bahamas, Thailand, Nigeria) and I would imagine the initial transition to the frigid cold hell of North Dakota was more than challenging. At least lived in Lincoln, NE previously which is cold but not nearly as much typically. Happy studying going into your new week. I participated in the American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting last week. It was done all online because of COVID (it was originally scheduled to be held in a hybrid fashion in Houston, TX). Got a lot out of that and it spurred some thoughts related to my dissertation area of interest. Hoping for a good discussion with my adviser at our appointment on Thursday. Good luck with generals exam preparation!

      Oh my goodness.. WAY too cold for me!! I remember you talking about the conference originally being in Houston! Bummer it was online, but I'm glad you were still able to get a lot out of it. Thanks! Good luck with your advisor meeting!

    Hi! I was wondering if you could make a video about neighborhoods in Columbus that are safe/affordable for OSU graduate students to live in?

    • @KatherineWeiss
      @KatherineWeiss  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! As I've only lived in one neighborhood, I'm not sure I would feel comfortable making a full video about this as I don't know too many of the other areas well. I know many grad students live in Old North, just north of campus, or further up in Clintonville. South of campus tends to be a little less safe (though that's where I live now), but it's very affordable.

    Hi Katherine! I love your videos! I can feel that it’s really cold there 🥶 I have to prepare since I’m from a tropical country. I am just wondering how did you find your apartment (aside from the info given by the graduate school)? Can you make a vlog of your preparations in moving in to Columbus? ❤️🙏🏻 thank you

      Hi thanks for watching! I found my apartment through an OSU facebook page! They also offer some resources through the school to find a place to live.

    Hi! I just got accepted into Ohio University's History PhD program yesterday and I think I'm going to do it. I'm glad to find your videos so I can try and get an idea of what life will be like. Do you have any advice for someone who is potentially starting in August this year?

    • @KatherineWeiss
      @KatherineWeiss  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say the biggest thing is to make connections with other scholars when you can in your field. Other advice is to find thing one thing you like to do outside of school- try to keep a work-life balance if you can!

    This is super random but with all your reading I’m curious if you know approx what your reading speed is for like 50 or 100 pages & then use that to map out your readings? (obvi depends on type of material etc) I know you said you tend to break down how much of a book you’ll read a day etc. when planning- do you tend to have to read 100/200+ pages per day while prepping for generals?

    • @KatherineWeiss
      @KatherineWeiss  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! If it's a book I usually read 50 pages an hour, so I use that to map out pages per day. I often read around 200 pages a day, reading 100 pages of 2 books a day. For articles, it is a bit different. I can take me longer to get through. Sometimes 40 minutes for a 25 page article.

    • @elizamcdonough6237

      @@KatherineWeiss that is so helpful thank you! I have been trying to find out my own reading speed recently, I am the same way with articles -- not sure what it is about them that takes so much longer to read & process haha thanks for your response :)
