  • The star of Love Actually, Shaun of the Dead and About Time talks about his career at the 2022 BFI London Film Festival, presented in partnership with American Express (5-16 October).
Few actors are as consistently impressive as Bill Nighy. After more than a decade of steadily building acclaim in theatre, radio and television, Nighy came to greater national and international attention for droll turns in late 90s comedic roles such as Still Crazy (1998) and TV mockmentary series People Like Us. Roles in the early 2000s showed his terrific range: touching British ensemble drama Lawless Heart (2001); cult vampire series Underworld and Richard Curtis’ Love Actually (2003), for which he won a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor.
From Hot Fuzz (2007) and the Pirates of the Caribbean series to Limehouse Golem (2016) and Their Finest (2016), he’s continued to shine in everything he’s done since. And Living (LFF 2022) is built around him, with the gifted actor in almost every shot. It’s a sublime performance - mournful, wry, epiphanic and one exuding empathy and humanity.

What is immensely attractive about Bill Nighy is his body language. You know he's cool even before he has spoken a single word.

Love him. So authentic in his roles and probably for all the reasons he recounts.

I love him too... he makes me laugh and he is himself on and off, I can see from this interview. Very heartwarming human being!

I first met Bill while working at DKNY on old bond St (no longer there) I absolutely loved seeing him and the chats we would have about life. He also inspired me and I loved his honesty. It’s comforting and non pretentious. He says it as it is. Great interview. I feel the interviewer wanted more positivity from Bill but what’s the point in that. It would then all be a lie….

'Flipping the bird' is not an insult in Britain.
