Pigeons! Tear Your Hair Out! Quick Update...

  • Here's just a quick update at the loft. With our first North Road Championship Race coming up I'm struggling to get the birds in the air. Am I feeding them right? Are the cocks and hens distracted by being so close to each other? Should I flag them or get them in the basket more? It's not as simple as some people (myself included) might think. Love to hear your thoughts in the comments. No frills video this time...

Try taking them on a couple of training tosses from 40 Miles Tuesday and Thursday, add 20% barley to there mix

Keep your head up mate love the videos. In pigeon racing you have ups and downs. A guy in our club his birds don’t exercise round the loft neither but come race day he’s always in the top 5. Don’t try and change too much.

Andrew here's what your missing it might be to late in the season but you need to get a map that shows your home & all the race points since I've been watching I assume it's 100 - 150 - 250 & 300 now you need to draw with a ruler straight lines from every release station/point to your loft now you need to establish the point in which the lines FIRST cross aka join together that is your training Sweet Spot let's say it's 25 miles this applies to young birds yearlings & old birds it's a spot that you toss the birds from anytime your not going further or your on the training truck what you're trying to do is to get them to be able to walk home blindfolded when you get to this point for a few days you toss them in mass then you divide the basket in half 5 miles before the release point you let a basket go then drive on to the sweet spot let the other basket go bring a mug of tea and something to snack so the birds can orient themselves on the ground about 5-10 minutes -- THE SWEET SPOT is the furthest point when your teaching them now you break the basket down to 4 you let one basket go at 5 miles short you make sure you see them clear then you drive 2.5 miles short of sweet spot then you get to sweet spot you let one basket go wait 1/2 hr or so let the last basket go
Would be good if you have someone at home to catch the birds small handful of barley & a pinch of candy continue doing that as more birds arrive once theres a break between birds pick up the feed when the next batch come do the same BUT this time since it might the first second & maybe third when first bird goes to water the feed trough gets picked up until last group come same thing when all birds are in first bird goes to water trough is picked up. That night after the fly you can make it up to them by giving all their 1/2 oz of night feed

Hi my name is Chuck, I just wanted to let you know that I very much enjoy your videos. Thank you for taking the time to supply us with your channel. I must ask your opinion on the best black tea out there? I see you having numerous cups and thought if I need advice you would be the man to ask....lol. What we call "builder's tea". If I was posh or from the 1800's I'd use tea leaves and a pot/strainer but these days everyone just uses teabags. Preferably Yorkshire 👍

If they don’t fly around the loft bring them up the road. Mine do the same after a few weeks of the system they catch on quick and want to be in the loft. Someone mentioned not letting them see
you same here they will be straight down if they see me. Keep them racing best to keep them fit and your loft is their home they must love it do don’t scare away from it. Check and treat for canker regularly. BTW really love watching the vlogs

Could be one of 3 things: health, fitness, motivation. They must be reasonably fit because of racing. If it was motivation then surely if they’re wanting to get back in, they’re motivated and last week’s race results would have shown that. So I’d say get the dropping tested to check health and go from there. Good luck with it 👍

Myn are doing the same but if you stood up at the shed they associate you with seeing the hens. When Myn do it l only let them out at tea time they'll fly better at night time. Stick the hens in the cocks section and lock each 1 in after food and exercise and drop the cocks on the perches. Don't start changing their food now you've started racing. Just give them a good chuck wed or Thursday if you think they need it. All the best

Tossing and racing can make the birds become lazy. So just toss them instead of loft flying once or twice a week.
But in saying that of u had bad race results last week then I’d be looking into there health. What do the droppings look like ? Could be wet canker ? The stress of tossing and racing can bring that on and it’s hard to pick up sometimes .
I wouldn’t think it’s the feeding if u haven’t changed the feed recently.
    Good luck mate

try see if they digest their food properly...see their waste you will have an idea...it should be a solid chunk with no liquid...and yes food affects their flying pattern very much...and also in which season they shed their feathers in your area? It depends on the season but could be this...
Anyway give them a place to bath they will be happy and rebooted 😁😊

1st thing to remember is they are all yearlings, they are notoriously difficult to motivate.
When in doubt get the basket out.
As others have said, do some short tosses (20 milers) and keep them there until they are beating you home.
The radio is another good idea and for the roundabout system.
Don't go changing to many things at once, consistency is key, they need to work on your regimen.

What is the disease in the lungs from bird poop?
Histoplasmosis is caused by a fungus that lives in soil, particularly where there's a large amount of bird or bat poop. People can get histoplasmosis by breathing in fungal spores, and infection can be mild or life-threatening. I thought id mention this the feather dust ` Bloom ` from the feathers can lead to lung problems and best provention is to give birds opportunity to bath, and wear a mask when clean ups Cheers.

If I walk into the house for a minute they will all land very quickly and trap.
      What have I done wrong?
I don't flag but I have chased them off of the roof of the house.

I do not feed peanuts. I'm feeding a racing mix that the club sells, mostly barley, safflower ect. (I dont know all the seeds yet)
Plain and simple I think they are scared of me.
A couple days ago I stood in front of the loft about 2.5 hours till they were flying tight circles around the loft. I walked in the house and immediately they drop and trap.
Last year racing YBs they drop and trap very well as long as I'm not there.
My yearlings (1st OB team ) they are better about it, but it's best if I'm out of the way.

I feed my hens in the beginning of the week (monday, tuesday)very light. "Zuivering" we call it in Belgium. Wednesday is 50/50 zuivering and diet. Then 2 days diet. If you basket friday to fly jnder 300 km the I give half of the ammount.
If they have a very hard race ahead or longer distance I chance it up with stronger feeding.
