i immediately clicked when it said surf rod building but I am losing it at the part where you are talking about tossing 2oz and then sticking into the rod holder tube. where i fish, we mostly have to use 13 footer with a 4 oz sinker toss it a couple hundred yards and retrieve then repeat again. It's even more abusive to the rod and reel than the combos the guys use at Cape. Trying to figure out if I should start building the rods as well.
Come on boys, you pups ain't done old school rods. How you measure the handle/ seat length is measure your arm length, put end of tape to your arm pit, then pull it to middle of your hand. Set seat to middle of your hand that's on every time and never off.

You can also use paracord for grips. i had a 14' 1 peace lamiglas surf rod mades years ago and had paracord for grips
