As a person who played WWE Raw vs. Smackdown 2008 on the Nintendo DS back in the day, I don't really care about the graphics, I just like a portable wrestling game that works, thinking of picking this up, thanks for the review
Fans of No Mercy and the old Smackdown games will love this retro throwback with today's wrestlers. Everyone else should probably just stick with WWE2k23.
Not for me and too expensive for sure. Glad some people will get some joy from it. Seems that your review is reasonable and fair. I would also be miffed at lack of modes compared to other modern wrestling games.
Best reviews from Switch Up. Have to say this has become my go to site for Nintendo Switch game reviews I love the in depth overview and E shop sales hot spots for indies. Will be picking this up on sale as a wrestling fan def agree on the £50 price point a little too much but happy for a £35
Wow, this game already lacked detail on the bigger consoles, but how do they still lower the quality, resolution and framerate on Switch? Or even more pointedly, how does this look worse than Day of Reckoning on Gamecube?
I cannot play the elite edition early access on Nintendo switch. THQ and AEW Games advertised that ALL PLATFORMS will have early access when you pre order the elite edition. And Nintendo switch and PC players were royalty screwed today. No compensation, no communication, no apology, nothing. Horrible launch
Hey! Thanks so much for reviewing this. I’ve actually been really excited for this to come out. I was hoping it would look a little cleaner on the switch given it’s more stripped down visuals. Here’s hoping a few optimization patches will have this looking and playing really well in the future.
I'm an avid AEW fan so from that standpoint, I'm really excited to play this! I actually bit on the "Elite Edition" because of the 10% discount and knocked a few more bucks off using gold coins. We'll see if I have regrets when it unlocks tomorrow though. A lot of the discussion on forums and impressions from streamers seem positive and enthusiastic so I'm hoping it's a good time. I haven't seriously touched a wrestling game since WWF No Mercy on the N64, so hearing from many that it's got a similar-ish feel sounds awesome. The lack of modes, barebones customization, and no cross-play with other platforms is disappointing, but everything else sounds about what I was expecting. I know it's not Yukes' first rodeo, but they probably didn't get a huge budget. Maybe as time goes on they'll add more value and patch/tweak stuff.
This was actually modelled after Wrestlemania 2K / No Mercy, so some of the art style and direction mentioned in the review, including the models and animation, will be intentional. It obviously doesn’t use the same game engine, but I think their usage here was made to resemble it as best they could.
Big fan of AEW and went a head an ordered the Elite edition regardless. I’m hoping a few patches down the line and even some more paid dlc to add to the events and more wrestlers. I’m aware it will increase the cost but hearing this is not a yearly release but going to consistently add to it.
Tag team wrestling sucks balls anyway - the enemy will ALWAYS run into the ring when you try and make a cover, dragging fights out to where you’ll literally fight forever.
I rolled the dice and picked it up. It has a few things to nit pick, but the game play is solid and the roster is large even without the pre orders and DLC. I loved the Def Jam wrestling games and it has a similar feel. I don't feel cheated at full price, but i understand waiting for a sale. I will admit being able to play as Owen Hart swayed me more than a bit. Lol
@@villain7574 I haven't unlocked him yet. I am only at 70-ish exhibition matches. Sorry to hear about your online issues. I haven't had any online problems so far. I have heard that the exhibition matches must be normal one on one matches but that's the only tip I know currently.
Me and my brother put so many hours into all the smack down games back on the ps2 but never clicked with any since that area and this looks very much like those so might have to pick this up on a decent sale
Honestly for a game that's been in development for like 3 years I'm amazed how bare this game is. With that said I'm glad that switch finally has a real wrestling game. But I'll probably wait for a sale.
I bought the Switch and XBOX version and man I love this game. Its so fun. The controls and reversals are fantastic, much like the old N64 AKI games and Day of Reckoning 2 on Gamecube. The Road to Elite is so fun and replayable because it changes up on each wrestler. There is a ton of hidden stuff on the game. The only thing that very basic in the game is some of the graphics and the create a wrestler mode but I personally don't care because the game is so fun. There is enough here to pay $60 because this game is actually a great wrestling game.
I’m so excited for later on today! I’ve waited a long time for a game that had some hints of the greatest wrestling game ever No Mercy. So glad we get something different from 2Ks simulator wrestling game
Big aew fan so I'm looking forward to trying it but not at full price. The game definitely seems like it has some issues. I did love the old smack down games but my favorite is no mercy on N64!
The gameplay feels a lot like No Mercy to me. It does need some more game modes and a little polish but I'm still having a lot of fun with it after a couple of days. If you like No Mercy it will be a good sale pick up when the price drops.
For me it’s one buy when it goes on sale. Given that it’s not the best looking game it probably a good game to get on the Switch rather than Xbox or PS if you have the choice.
In europe the prices for this game are way low, so i need this video to understand the reason behind it, because SwitchUp is the only one we can trust, before i buy a game i try to find a review in this channel and than decide ok or leave Best of whishes guys
Question about the game: can you WATCH matches with all computer-controlled characters or do YOU have to be in control of a character? This is BIG for me. Thank you!
Well, this confirms that I'll be waiting for a sale, and to see this game on the revisited patched up episodes in the future. Im an old school RAW Era wrestling fan & was hoping to get the same experience that I got from the WWF Aki games on the N64, especially with that create a wrestler feature, but since it seems so bare-bones as of right now, I'm hoping they expand it later with some DLC or updates. Thanks again for the review fellas, stellar job!
It sounds like a game I’ll pick once it’s updated and is on sale. I’m not a fan modern wrestling these days but I’ve been dying to have a modern pro wrestling game on the Switch and it’s a shame WWE 2k18 came out the way it did on the Switch but at least this game is a step in the right direction
The animations are all certainly ahead of the curve, it may be more obvious after playing most other wrestling games today. That said, the create a character mode is poor, even for aj initial release and I would even say the career mode needs a serious innovative touch. But this is their first game and if you enjoyed games like WWF No Mercy ON The N64, you're not going to be disappointed by the gameplay. The DLC content will improve things drastically over the next 6 months. I remember WCW world tour and it took several games following that to get to No mercy, I don't think we will be waiting that long. Your review is probably fair if you're not a wrestling fan. I'd have given it 72 overall. Maybe come bwck and review again in a years time? I feel like this game is a bit of a Baldo.
I’m going to slightly help this review. There’s is more wrestlers and Minigames but they need to be unlocked by RTE and the shop. Why exactly would people be playing just for the story mode? There are different paths to go in RTE. The price will depend on what you like, if you are a fan of AEW or wrestling games you are more likely to pay full price. This is also just the beginning of a Dragonball Xenoverse 2 type of game. A not fully live service game. This is not WWE games of yearly release. This is one game for some amount of time.
When I had local friends, I’d have loved a generic unlicensed wrestling game with wacky premade characters and create-your-own-wrestler mode. I loved Attitude-Era WWF in the late 90s so modern licensed wrestling properties cannot compete.
The memories are flooding back...unfortunately my wrestling interests have dwindled. I can't see myself getting the enjoyment I once had with this. I am, however, looking forward to WrestleQuest.
I went from getting this game on day 1 because I love AEW and wanted a good ol’ fashioned wrasslin’ game. But I immediately did a 180 when I found out they locked my favorites (FTR) behind a paywall. Finding out it’s lacking in modes and just general features worries me further that they’ll charge for this stuff and add weak free content over time. Also, Jeff is definitely looking more rugged these days, but still good! 😊
@@briantaylorcloe7725 right, but if I remember correctly, it’s $80 for that. I get they’ll sell DLC, but at launch and with current title holders rubs me the wrong way. But that’s just me 😊
Nice review of AEW fight forever, while the graphics aren’t too impressive on the switch version that was also a trait with the Aki N64 games while not exactly impressive for the hardware, the gameplay more than made up for it and it was easy to pick up and play and I’m expecting that same easy to pick up and play with AEW, five forever, and a great review and looking forward to picking this up when I get my switch in about a weeks time.
NintendoLife mentions in their review that it suffers from momentary pauses that can be quite distracting. This video seemed to show half-second stutters where everything just freezes. Not dropped frames but actual game freezes. For me they’ve veered too much into arcade territory, making it look like battleground or allstars. Quite funny considering they’ve used no mercy as a template, which was a simulation as the tech would allow at the time.
Performance is ok - yes there are occasionally stutters but I've seen and experienced far worse. Still visuals and performance still scored 12/20 not great
For me I'll have to skip, cause i love AEW and being able to play a game with CM Punk is great, but i need a universe mode, cause thats why i play WWE games, it gives me something fun to do when playing by myself and doesn't burn me out, but i quickly will after playing a few matches with nothing much too them, and i don't play these games for a story mode since I'd rather imagine my own, but I'll definitely be looking forward to the next game that i hope is less arcade and more simulator
The ONLY reviewers I FULLY trust! I’m ok with a 70% score as the first attempt for this wrestling promotion ! I will pay the full price because I’m dividing that price by how many years I’ve been waiting for a respectable enough wrestling game… especially on handheld. $60/20years….. DEAL! 😂
@@SwitchUpYt I completely understand….I will reward them with my cash for their efforts! This way they have money to make the necessary growth! We rarely get these kinda games so when we get one that’s respectable enough, we support! Now I’m just waiting for EA BIg to get us Def Jam Vendetta and Fight for NY collection for switch and then Skate 1,2,3 😂
As far as wrestling games on the switch go, there is not many options. I feel like this is one of the best. It's not perfect, but. It is full a lot of fun.
Random question but do you know if you can use the girl wrestlers in the story mode? I haven't played a wrestling game in like 10 years and I know that wasn't a thing back then and I'm hoping it's changed
This is easily the best wrestling game on the switch not the best in general for all consoles but very good on the switch I’m a fan of it and I do recommend it still decent at full price but if you can try to get it on sale
Im glad you guys reviewed it but I think you were abit harsh, this is the best wrestling game on the switch, I mean just compare it to the mess of wwe2k18 but I agree the price should be £35 without any dlc as abit bare at launch
For those who are even thinking of getting this game, get Wrestling Empire instead for only $20. The gameplay is janky but fun, and the game screams personality with the best career mode in any wrestling game including a free roaming mode. The game also has a freaking GM mode!
Me and my older brother grew up on 90s wrestling games, I welcome it. As far as the cons go, I'm sure they will get patched out, plus developers have been pretty generous with post launch patches
All I got to go from it is the initial three DLCs , from tomorrow until Holiday Season, and it looks well enough for me! Surely the companies involved wanna make a great first impression, so I would not be surprised of patches and bonuses before the end of thee month
On the switch version of this game atleast as of now you wont find any players online and since this game lacks content that kills the game for me theres nothing really to do offline beside road to elite and exbition matches
My go-to TH-cam channel for everything Switch. Thanks so much for your amazing work in giving us these ultra in-depth reviews. Your dedication is unmatched.
Ill most likely pick this up a bit down the line once they tweak some things and it drops down in price a bit. Looking forward to doing some of the matches like the exploding barbedwire match because that was a cool match irl minus the ending lol
Doesn't sound like Yukes was swinging for the fences with this one. Maybe they'll sharpen things up after a couple sequels, but the fact that they were making perfectly decent wrestling games on the ancient PSP (give or take some excessive loading times) suggests that they weren't taking this project as seriously as they should have.
They should have been, if the reports are correct about how much money Olivier spent on it. I’m sure i read somewhere this first game was just about developing the engine, which basically makes it a glorified demo, and that all the requested features, match types etc will be added in later titles
Ugh. Preordered and all and I still can't play it... Getting a message that I cannot play the software yet. Yeesh. I hope they release it soon. It's the 29th. Wtf.
All the various footage of this game, if you told me this was made by a company that has been making Wrestling games for 20+ years well I would be a bit surprised. This game is pretty rough looking and the performance is pretty subpar, the DLC model is killer. It looks like a pretty barebones game that should be like half a regular retail game's price at max.
03:55 Watching Sting roll out of the ring like a phantom passing through the feet of someone is the jankiness we all love about these wrestling games. Haha.
I pre ordered this and am getting it tmr. I do think that, atleast from what I've heard they will add future updates to the game, so more arena's, match types and wrestlers can be expected, aswell as better create a wrestler parts too. I do feel though that a lack of superstar threads was a bit of a let down for me, but the fact you can customize controls is neat, as I am used to having only 'A' and 'B' controls in games from svr 2006 and 2007. But for me, my boy Jeff Hardy is in so its a buy LOL. I even played svr 2008, even though the game was a downgrade from 07, I played because of him, justified, maybe not for everyone but for me, damnit, yes! Cheers mate, good review
Anyone playing it on Switch my question is online working cause mine hasn't worked since day 1 played 273 matches and haven't seen Owen in the shop to purchase for $50,000

DEAL! 😂
Cheers mate! Yeah it's fun but just a little dated in some areas. Mark
Anybody else still not able to play this yet on Switch? I pre-ordered and it’s still telling me it’s not available. It’s really pissing me off!
Random question but do you know if you can use the girl wrestlers in the story mode? I haven't played a wrestling game in like 10 years and I know that wasn't a thing back then and I'm hoping it's changed
You can use anyone I believe
Don't apologize for being honest it's your opinion, but I just picked up my preorder and I'm in love with it.
Im glad you didnt mention No Mercy or AKI's games which many are comparing this too. This is a joke compared to AKI's games.
Can someone please let me know if their signature button is not working? It’s really frustrating.
Signature button? You mean pressing the analogue/dpad UP? Definitely works :)
For sure. You'll have a good time. Mark
All I got to go from it is the initial three DLCs , from tomorrow until Holiday Season, and it looks well enough for me!
Surely the companies involved wanna make a great first impression, so I would not be surprised of patches and bonuses before the end of thee month
Not a mark, I work for a wrestling company
On the switch version of this game atleast as of now you wont find any players online and since this game lacks content that kills the game for me theres nothing really to do offline beside road to elite and exbition matches
My go-to TH-cam channel for everything Switch. Thanks so much for your amazing work in giving us these ultra in-depth reviews. Your dedication is unmatched.
The review seems fair. Still this is probably the best wrestling game on the Switch. So in a way that alone makes it a higher value for a fan.
Yeah absolutely
Could someone please post the Nintendo switch controls please?
Ill most likely pick this up a bit down the line once they tweak some things and it drops down in price a bit. Looking forward to doing some of the matches like the exploding barbedwire match because that was a cool match irl minus the ending lol
Surely some folks will appreciate mid-ring cuddles n spoons .... LoL

Welcome to the internet@@King_Dragmire Big Fella
Has Paul White shrunk?
I preordered the elite edition and can’t play it early 😞
That's really bad
Doesn't sound like Yukes was swinging for the fences with this one. Maybe they'll sharpen things up after a couple sequels, but the fact that they were making perfectly decent wrestling games on the ancient PSP (give or take some excessive loading times) suggests that they weren't taking this project as seriously as they should have.
They should have been, if the reports are correct about how much money Olivier spent on it. I’m sure i read somewhere this first game was just about developing the engine, which basically makes it a glorified demo, and that all the requested features, match types etc will be added in later titles
@@simontabony Sounds like a King of Fighters 12 situation.
This makes a lot of sense
Ugh. Preordered and all and I still can't play it... Getting a message that I cannot play the software yet. Yeesh. I hope they release it soon. It's the 29th. Wtf.
this looks really fun, I just have to wait for the price to drop. unfortunately I cant afford 60 for it right now
Preorder it last night and was looking for a good review. I appreciate your honestly
How is the game ?
I have been debating switch vs PS5.
Seems like the game is half baked and lacking in every department. Not saying its bad and cant have fun with it but maybe when its $15-20
Game won't even load for me on the switch, got the elite edition and everything still says can't play it yet. Definitely not happy
Yeah I've heard it didn't launch early as it should have. Mark
I think I'll pick this up on a very deep discount. As of now, it's a pass for me. Hope others enjoy it though
Yea no way I’m spending $60 on this. Thanks for the review!
Everybody Is complaining about the lack of content so, ill wait for updates and sales
Would anyone that has this for switch say it plays smooth though? Even though it struggles a bit? So I hear
Haven't played a wrestling game since WWF Royal Rumble on the SNES (which was AWESOME), don't think this will change any time soon!
I just hope it’s fun. I miss WWF No Mercy and WCW/NWO Revenge! 🤘🍿🤘
Will definitely be picking it up on sale.
03:55 Watching Sting roll out of the ring like a phantom passing through the feet of someone is the jankiness we all love about these wrestling games. Haha.
How to play local multiplayer?
Looks like a good fair review
If this was 20 or less i might pick it up
Full price is way too expensive
Yea its on sale at my local best buy for $20 for switch so i really want to get it bc i aint paying full price for a game like this
It's fine to complain about the price, though Amazon have it for £41 so it's best to look at different prices before stating it'll cost £50
THQ- the bastion of random midrange games!
Cassette beasts just got an update, I know you have the patched up series
Sorry guys it sucks that the muddy visuals and janky controls are a failure on Switch!
They aren’t great are they lol
Anyone playing it on Switch my question is online working cause mine hasn't worked since day 1 played 273 matches and haven't seen Owen in the shop to purchase for $50,000
