SQLite Has The Greatest Code of Conduct

- Back when SQLite first introduced there new Code of Conduct or now the Code Of Ethics it had a lot of drama surrounding it and recently it's been making the rounds again so I thought why not talk about whether I follow the The Rule.

Honestly, one-way covenants are pretty goated-"if you submit a PR or a bug report to us, you can expect us to treat you in this way, and we expect *zero* reciprocity" is refreshingly mature.
can someone explain what this mean?
It's not a substitute for a Code of Conduct, though.
It's a misuse of the word 'covenant' though.
@@NormTurtle0:48 - the SQLite development team are explicitly saying this is not a "code of conduct" but merely a statement of their own principles. They're not requiring anyone to abide by these "rules," they're just _promising_ to abide by them, themselves.
"Give us X or we'll do Y." - Could work both ways.

SQLite CoC: "Be not lazy"
All my iterators:"And I took that personally."
PARSE ALL THE THINGS
@@Poldovico Lazy parsing is OK, and it's good to be strict in the leaves and lazy in the spine (Matt. 6:34, we want the leaves to be evaluated when the spine is needed-- and if we ever end up in a situation where the leaves haven't been forced to a normal form then we need to rethink the algebra of our problem. See H2 on having good strictness/laziness at the language level in Haskell); (I'm painting in broad strokes here, but I don't want to become too technical.) Additional support includes Acts 8:16.
We can also see that lazy parsing is okay (See Daniel 5:25-28; Daniel incrementally parsed the Aramaic text instead of allocating the entire thing and possibly causing an OOM; or even a denial of service with a maliciously crafted input that continued to consume. See Bernardy 2009 and all the good work that's been done in tree-sitter). For additional scriptural support for a more anamorphic phrasing you can think about how people would interpret the language into the vernacular as you go along. Note, you shouldn't confuse a shotgun parser (where irreversible execution flow, branching, arbitrary extra-parser recursion, and especially IO actions is invoked by unvalidated input) with an incremental one.
I found your SQLite code will bite you when you move to the real thing.

the idea of "bury the dead" doesnt mean always literal burial, more to take care of the dead respectfully rather than leaving the bodies to rot/be taken by animals.
Ohh so I got 5 points not 6. If we eat animals they should eat us.
It would have been really sus if Brodie had awarded himself a point for this and not the "no murder" one though...
@@CommentGuard717 it depends, some part of the body can't not be eaten by animals but can make fertilizer (yes i also 'lost' a point here)
We should be able to extrapolate this some. Bury the dead means you should also invalidate caches quickly, never allow anything to block or be in a temporally invalid state (I know model checking is niche, but it's good). But we know that it also means that we shouldn't spend a lot of time doing erasures and instead be mindful of how arenas work (Matt. 8:22)
This is also interesting in terms of incorrupt saints (which we can see as representing immutable data); whose relics we would want to keep around. So trying to keep things as cache-local as possible, keeping whatever we can in .rodata, etc. all important. I would have to think abotu this some more.
I think you can extrapolate a little and think of it as "leaving the past behind", not dwelling on something that happened, closing an issue, not suffering from it.
But have you ever tried telling some guy in a game lobby "I love you too, bro." after he's done cursing you out? You could even wish him a wonderful day for good measure.
I thought I was the only one doing that :D
I do all that, then ask them for their digits, and out to dinner 😈
A programmer's baptism is submitting a PR to SQLite
Only 3 people get to go to Programming Heaven.....
SQLite does not accept PRs, because the code is public domain and they can't risk anyone using licensed code. Also the people who do get to write code for it have to sign public domain dedications and they're in a safe at the Hwaci office (Hwaci is the company that works on SQLite and Hipp operates it, just him and 2 others I think)
They don't accept code changes

Wait he prays to the God of RNG!!! Get the pitchforks, the heretic does not follow our lord and savior Gaben.
A bit of Christian autism here. They're using the word 'covenant' incorrectly. A covenant is a unilateral contract insofar as one party has all the power and the other must simply have faith that it will be honored. Having faith does not mean believing that God exists, because of course he exists, it is about trusting that God cares about you and will reward you for abiding by the covenant. Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and be rewarded with eternal life first in Heaven and then in the New Earth.
The SQLite code of ethics isn't a covenant because there are no conditionals. It's simply a promise. And that's wonderful.

what's rule 40?
I'm a Christian. I know this was, as you said at the end, a joke video, but I appreciate how gracious and respectful you were when you disagreed with or misunderstood some of the points. (To be fair, some of the language is somewhat old and is no longer used in exactly the same way outside of religious contexts.)
Speaking of misunderstandings, though, I kept hearing you say variants of "but some people don't deserve ______ ". You were absolutely right every time you said that, and one reason these rules were written was to tell Christians to treat others _better_ than they deserve. I don't expect you, as an agnostic, to do that, but trying to treat others better than they deserve (which is often what we mean by "loving our enemies") is non-negotiable if one is to honestly call oneself a Christian. That's why so many rules in this list were related to it.
Anyway, thanks for making this video, Brodie, and all the others you've made. I don't think there's been one I didn't enjoy. And as a bonus, this was a nice review of a lot of the ethics I've been taught for my whole life (along with a few extra Benedictine peculiarities). 🙂
I think you misunderstand point 27, Do not swear - This means don't "swear on x that y is true", it has nothing to do with foul language.

"Bear persecution for justice's sake" means to remain steadfast in the truth, regardless of how much you may be persecuted for it.

When it comes to "do not bear false witness", that could also be interpreted to mean "do not lie about other people" - which I would argue is far more ethically important.
Am I seriously the only one who finds the message that you should never attribute your positive qualities to yourself, but always attribute your negative qualities to yourself quite harmful? That’s a very easy way to end up hating yourself. You absolutely should take credit for your own accomplishments.
The ye olden days phrasing really makes it sound insane in modern English. The idea is SUPPOSED TO BE "Don't get arrogant about your accomplishments, remember that God made you in a unique and special way with talents and gifts to use as you see fit. Do good with them and remember to thank him for the gifts he gave you." It's not about not being proud of what you have done, it's about not being proud IN what you have done.
Some people go to far with their personal accomplishments and lose sight of doing new great things. Do you know anyone who constantly talks about how great they were at a certain sport back in high school even though they're now 30

Ya know what really got me shook. that a religious Christian based really tight take on the rules of the bible is somehow ... more wholesome and can be actually reformed into a very respectful religious free CoC/CoE.
My only thought was, baby oh baby, do we need an editor & translator. That said, I think a religious free version as a basics for worldwide on a social media network would be a step up really, and I think some needs the touch of a lawyers hand that also happens to have good background in translation & several masters of English as well. I smell twisting of the words coming from the love section to be used in bad ways if not treated carefully.
Though I think you may have missed the point on some of these by being way to literal.. on some points (poor translations and all that), but ya if most people just learned to 40% or so of this list even without 'god' aspect to it, we would honestly be in a much better place.
There’s no need to be ashamed of religion. Religion has good morals. Say it like it is.

Imposter syndrome is its own form of pride. Ss. Thomas Aquinas and Alphonsus Liguori speak about this in their moral theology. 32: it's actually pretty fun to "bless" people in a sarcastic way.
Everyone is used to being cursed in games, but say a "wow, you're really good aren't you?" in a sarcastic way and they go nuts.
Here's my summary of the rules which are most morally ambiguous, in my opinion:
1. "Love the lord god": Which god? If it's the Abrahamic god, then which denomination?
3. "Do not murder.": Yes, this is *very* morally ambiguous. This depends on one's position on self-defense rights, abortion rights, animal rights, whether military violence is OK, whether police violence is OK, and many other things. There's legit some people who think an egg and a sperm are the same thing as a person.
4. "Do not commit adultery.": This depends on what you think counts as sex, what counts as marriage, and especially on what definition you give for "adultery".
5. "Do not steal.": This depends on your view of property rights, what can be owned, what counts as stealing, whether copying or duplication counts as stealing, intellectual property rights and copyrights, and tax law.
6. "Do not covet.": The word "covet" alone is so vague as to allow infinite variability. I believe this is an impossible standard to meet, though some people might get close, like some Jainists.
7. "Do not bear false witness.": This depends on what counts as a lie, what counts as "bearing witness". There are some people in the Abrahamic religion who literally just don't speak with their mouths for certain periods of time because they wish to comply with this rule. Nonetheless though, those people still end up communicating, often nonverbally.
8. "Honor all people.": This is pretty OK, but what counts as a person is very subjective, see rule 3.
10. "Deny oneself to follow Christ.": Which Christ? What things did they say or want? How closely should one "follow" them?
11. "Chastise the body.": The word "chastise" is very vague. Does this mean physically? And does this only apply to one's own body? How often should this be done, and under what circumstances?
12. "Do not become attached to pleasures.": This depends on what counts as attachment, and what counts as a pleasure. Is breathing a pleasure? Or eating? I think living is a pleasure, and I (as a concept) am pretty well-attached to it. Is indulgence different from attachment?
15. "Clothe the naked.": What if they become attached to their clothing (which is a pleasure)? What if they become covetous of others the next time they become naked? What if they want to be naked, i.e. Jainists?
Making this was fun but at this point I've gotten bored. Have a wonderful day and hail Satan.

eternal life without eternal health and/or youth would truly suck
The commandment #73 is missing. 73. When old people make funny things with your body, then call 911, sweety.
Don't worry, not being sure what to do when someone is sad is quite a common thing, autism being one of the possible causes, but there are many!
As a Christian, some of those are really repetitive and I do not think God agrees with. I am positive that God enjoys laughter.
Says that doesn't like wine, but plays games on linux
I any case St. Benedict has authority on the matter - in stark contrast to Ada Ehmke.
"Bearing false witness" refers to testifying under oath.
A few thoughts: in Christianity, “your neighbor” is your fellow men and women. Not just the person or people you live next to. The “desires of the flesh” refer to anything that is not Christ-like. It’s sinful desire - not necessarily libido and attraction (trying to avoid TH-cam censorship here). Some of these are plain weird and not at all Christian, like the bit about loving much or boisterous laughter…
There are some denominations of Christianity which do not allow fun to be bad, which ban the use of colour in your life. It's a very bleak and depressing kind of life that I've only seen in elderly people
Do keep in mind this originated as rules for a specific cloistered community. Some of the rules are for all Christians, and some are just for being good roommates where people are trying to relax and study.
For the "Do not become attached to pleasures", this is a bit like in Buddhism or Stoicism. While other currents, in Christianity, Buddhism or Stoicism, are more "you can accept pleasures which come to you (as long they are moral). But you shouldn't put too much efforts in seeking pleasures and keeping them because this is like trying to holding sand." In other words, accept that all pleasures are ephemeral and don't run after them.
I thought 10 was enough, had no idea we needed 72.

"small lies are ok" = "fooling people a bit is okay". Ok, what's the limit? Explain mathematically
It is worth noting there is a distinction between _lies_ in general and giving _false witness_ . The rule, as stated, allows you to play the card game _BS_ with your friends. Similarly, a stage magician can misdirect and confuse the audience for entertainment and delight. The key distinction is giving false witness causes harm, and is done without the consent of the deceived.
@@yellingintothewind I understand, but allowing oneself to be tricked or tricking oneself, as well as bearing false witness, are still lies. It is small relativisms like this that lead, for example, dictators in tyrannical countries, to base their atrocious actions. "It is valid to lie 'a little' to combat supposed lies (usually truths) in order to guarantee social stability." Games are forbidden in certain christian doctrines, and this is now seen as extremism, when in fact outside this bubble lying has only been normalized.
Brodie doesn't understand most of these edicts. Sadly, most people don't. We've all been given such a poor formation in childhood, that we take shallow vernacular, even vulgar meanings for most of these things now. He doesn't understand what he's affirming or denying. That, at least, is a point in his favour as far as judging his culpability goes.
To love your enemy, love your neighbour, love your juniors, and love yourself, as Benedict would have understood (and the church accepts as the meaning of the term), is to will what is good for another for his own sake, or for the sake of the good itself. To will something, is to act on an ordered deliberate desire. An ordered deliberate desire is something that arises out of reason, reflection, and prayer, as well as studied practice (as Aristotle would have advised). The good, if you are a Christian, is what God wills for each man.
So, to love your enemy, is to attempt to give to your enemy that which you have reasonably discerned is God's will for him. Likewise for yourself, your neighbour, and your juniors. It is still not an easy task. But it is certainly not just "liking" your enemy, or giving him a big hug, or baking him a birthday cake or any of the other sentimental notions of "love" that we imagine as moderns. Corporal discipline might be an act of love, if the person receiving the discipline will be improved by it (say, in the case of a soldier). Prison might be an act of love (in the case of a criminal). Chastisement might be an act of love (in the case of a child). Denial might be an act of love (such as in the case of an addict or alcoholic).
Every one of these rules has a deeper meaning like that. But we're so ignorant of our own history and tradition now, that we don't even realize it. Trying to read Benedict through the eyes of 21st century culture, is like trying to imagine what it would take to live on Venus.
