    Do you find using C-LOG at night to be an issue? On my C100 Mark II, if I'm shooting at night and theres only one light source, lets say a candle, I'm seeing these pulsing black lines on my screen. Do you know what this might be?

    Ah! Why didn’t I think if that? Just because it seems there’s more dynamic range in c-log that doesn’t necessarily mean you have more flexibility in grading. I assumed I would have more flexibility with my darker exposures (I often have low light) but the truth is I need to anticipate crushing the blacks and not raising them! Thanks for the good advice.

    This video was VERY helpful. I've been trying to figure out why some ISO is noisier than others, Showing how all of the different ISO's are affected in the video was really helpful. I see so many videos that just say "Canon native ISO is 400" But your video showed me that 800 might actually be better for noise. Anyways. I hope you get 10,000 subs soon! Sooo glad to hear someone embrace the noise. I'm leaning on embracing it for certain styles of filming, sometimes I kinda feel like I'm shooting a vintage 16mm film and that's definitely cool to me

    This video is definitely eye opening and helpful! I've been shooting with a DSLR since 2012 but my background is traditional video. It was drilled into my head to NEVER add gain since it introduces way too much noise on a traditional video camera. I always approached ISO as I did with gain which is not the best way to think. Before I started shooting in log I always did my best to expose correctly and keep my ISO locked down at 400. That school of thought has worked for me for a very long time. More recently, I've moved from the Canon 5d to the Canon R5 (shooting in Clog-3) and to my horror, I've seen a crap ton of noise!!!!!! I've been underexposing slightly so I appreciate you reassuring me that it's okay to shoot at a higher ISO since you will be bringing it all down in post. I just needed someone to actually tell me that. LOL!! Thanks so much Ben!

    • @BenSchubert
      @BenSchubert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, I am glad that was helpful. I started in a similar place where adding gain to your camera would add a crazy amount of noise. Luckily thinks have changed and processors/ sensors are so much better at handling the gain

  • @maartenjanssen
    @maartenjanssen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m in the middle of setting up a studio space with an EOS R so this is very helpful. Especially the fact that the least amount of noise is at the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 ISO settings. With my lighting its probably going to be 1600 then. Thanks!

    Definitely a much needed video. Great job. Not much on TH-cam about shooting, exposing, and grading C-Log. Could you do a detailed video about how the external monitor assist you with nailing exposure? Like what are the clipping ire levels for C-Log? Sony says slog is 107.

    • @BenSchubert
      @BenSchubert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I've been thinking about doing this. My monitor is the most useful exposure tool I use across different cameras. I'm not sure what the C-log Top end is I usually like to stay under 95 regardless. I find the trickier part is always making sure I expose high enough for clean shadows

    Here from your other video :), I'm going to try ISO 800. Does "Cinema EOS Original" vs "Neutral" make a difference in noise? Which do you recommend?

    • @ShervinShares
      @ShervinShares 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ben Schubert I'm definitely doing something wrong. Still just as much noise. No ND filter, FHD 23.98fps IPB, CLOG, 1/50 shutter, at f2.8, ISO 800. And the bokeh background has excessive noise, it looks so much better if I turn off CLOG. Could I be doing something wrong?

    • @BenSchubert
      @BenSchubert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Firstly, eos original is what I use.
      Secondly, log isn’t supposed to look good on its own. It needs contrast and saturation. The blacks and shadows have to be crushed. The noise you are seeing is always there, but you don’t see it in “normal” because it’s crushed. Try raising the blacks and shadows on a non c-log clip to see what it looks like.

    Hey can i ask: Shooting clog on the R6.....what should i set my zebra to prevent clipping? 85%? 90%? 95%? And when you set zebra to say 95%,....does that me you lower exposure until there’s zero zebras appearing? Is just a small amount of zebras ok? And excited to hear CLOG3 coming to the R6. All same rules apply to CLOG3 as CLOG? Many thanks!!!

    • @BenSchubert

    I've been struggling with exposing for clog and this video is so freaking useful! Really clear explanation, think this will definitely help me out! Always had issues with correcting my clog footage when I filmed something inside of my house and my background was dark and not that well exposed. So I should rather expose for the shadows and make sure that that's correct exposed instead of my face/ body? Once again, super good video man, was really looking for this for a while!

    HI Ben, could you explain what are the best settings for sound in the Eos r?

    • @BenSchubert
      @BenSchubert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I should maybe do a video about that. Short answer is you need to get the most signal (without clipping!) from your audio source to your camera and then aim for -6db peak in camera. I try to keep my volume levels in camera as low as possible. If I have a source that can send a good signal, like my wireless Lav, I will keep camera volume at the lowest point (1%). Generally when I’m using my D3pro I keep it at about 25%

    Hi Ben, great video, at 9:35 when you’re exposing with Ninja V for a landscape with false colour (I love false colour tool), are you exposing for middle grey on the sky in the background or the trees in the foreground, I can see you’ve adjusted just before yellow for the sky so it doesn’t blow out, and is it as simple as that? What about say a night scene with a street light shining onto say a car, what False colour IRE on Ninja V should we be using to get a dynamic shot of the night lights etc, do we use the same theory, exposure for middle grey or orange on the areas in the composition that we want to focus on? Thankyou. New subscriber from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺👍🏼

    • @BenSchubert
      @BenSchubert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a great question and frankly I keep things really simple.
      1) I only use middle grey for critical exposure like skin tones.
      2) For Daylight, yes I am only keeping the sky from clipping unless I am trying to get skin tones exposed.
      3) Night scenes are the opposite of Day and I am just trying to get as much exposure as possible to keep blacks and shadows above 10-20 IRE.

      Ben Schubert I just watched your EOS R settings again, you mentioned about shooting with the monitor and viewing it in HLG, which is great. Fantastic information in your videos, we really appreciate your informative videos. Can you also do a video on editing pc/laptop and your experiences/recommended setups? I’ve only got an iPad Pro at the moment with LumaFusion and so I’m stuck to internal 8bit clog 4k ipb and 1080 all-I, that is the limit with ipad iOS which sucks I can’t use 10bit clog, as the iPad will not work with ProRes and DNxHR codecs 👎🏼 Eventually would like to upgrade to a PC/Mac or laptop. Super helpful. Thank you. I’m currently trying to fall in love with my R6 (and feel good about the investment) but I am noticing the green/orange cast that can happen in skin tones will using CLog. I notice it in your video here as well. Any thoughts on this? I’m changed systems for sake of the Canon colors, so this one is hard to look past.

    • @BenSchubert
      @BenSchubert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment, I feel there is a lot to unpack in that question. Every camera system leans a certain way and will give you a cast of one kind or another, so its best to go with the one that leans in your preference.
      I had someone say that about this video before and I double checked it on my scopes. half of it is fairly neutral and half of it leans magenta. It turned out that his monitor needed calibrating and was a bit too magenta so my neutral shots looked green and my magenta shots looked fine. First, you can either make sure you are referencing your videos on a calibrated monitor or make sure that the scopes confirm what you are seeing. If that is all clear then the 10bit in the R6 will give you a lot of room for colour correction in post.
      Hope this helps!

    Hi Ben, thanks for this video. It's actually helping me a lot as a new EOS R user.
    I come from using the APSC sensor 90D, shooting at 3200 iso was a disaster. using the R at 3200iso makes the image look better to my surprise, however, I can still notice a bit grain in my video. It's far less but it's there.
    I would like to know, do you use plugins such as Neat Video, and if you do, how often would you usually use it to clean out your videos?
    Because I don't see myself going back to anything else but C Log. But hank you for this great video. Blessings.
