    Hope you guys find this video informative and useful! Just a small request, please don't ask me to upgrade or change my bike. Hahaha. I love this motorcycle with its limitations. I may upgrade someday, but for now I'm sticking with my partner-in-crime!
    The idea is simply to share my experiences so that others who want to do something similar will be more aware of the realities related to it and things to watch out for. Hope that is achieved. Thanks for watching!

      I've been riding one since 2006 and I can speak for myself. The brand is genuinely evocative and consistently stands for some values that nothing else in the market today does.
      That said, I wouldn't have put up with the sheer pain and expense of maintaining my Bullet for the brand alone. The clincher, for me, is a combination of the riding geometry and that engine. A lot of die-hard RE fans will tell you about the 'Thump'. If you dissect that, what it really is for me, is the languid, melodious long stroke OHV engine that pulls like a tractor and purrs like a tiger.

    great video mate....
    many people here do not understand the concept of motorcycling and the simple pleasures associated with it. the simple joys of motorcycling is not riding 4 digit kms in a day to prove your manhood, doing a comparison with torque/bhp numbers, it is much more than that and much beyond.
    and i find it funny how novice riders are trying to give advice to an experienced rider who rides solo all across the india to places which these people have not even heard the names.
    you are an inspiration to amateur bikers like me and many others.
    Regards,
    khan.

    RE should pay attention to your vlog if it wants to grow its market. The wiring harness, fuel pump and starter motor are things that shouldn't be breaking down after just three years of use. Admittedly you have pushed the bike to its riding limits through the terrain it has been subjected to. All major japanese brand bikes have long since resolved these quality control issues and even Harley Davidson has more or less sorted those QC issues. I ride a japanese bike and am also a long distance rider. Apart from regular servicing every odd 7K and replacing tyres & brake pads (usual maintenance) the bike..touch wood still runs brilliantly. It has to date covered 56000 kms.
    Love your videos by the way ! Looking forward to your next trip :)

      There is always a price for quality. The starter motor used in 500 is denso make where as 350 is made in india. Try self starting both bike and you will know the diffrence. 350 motor makes a weird sound when engine not fired where as 500 is smooth. Also fuel pump is made by keihin which is also of superior quality. I think re spares are very reasonable compared to others in its class. This bike is ridden hard in all types of terrains and may be the reason why so much expenses incurred. And for RE, there is always a way around if you do some research. Even if you watch vloggers who uses triumph tiger which is more than 10lakh on which things go wrong. I own a desert storm 500 2013 model. I am still using it with no problem. Ofcourse minor niggles are present and i can clear it by myself.

    • @GiridharaKrishna
      @GiridharaKrishna 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Shamseer Aboobacker Denso starter motor and Keihin fuel pump, but why such poor harness? Which melts and copper comes out.. why RE why? (quality of EFI system in RE is debatable as so many people are facing issues with it, with Indian conditions such as dirty fuel, maintaining low fuel level to make it worse)

  • @cohall46
    @cohall46 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You said that the wiring harness of your bike is like the nervous system of your motorcycle - so very true. When you spoke about your starter motor I was reminded why I like the old kick starter systems. From what you said it sounds like your bike has brought you a lot of pleasure so hopefully you will be able to get another 3 years of trouble free riding. Thanks for sharing.

    Having a bike is not always about happy story, it's comes with it's own amount of displeasure as well, infact last year during my tour I was just 90km from my home as I started I had a terrible crash but all thanks to the safety gears nothing happened to me except just a braised on the glove, jacket and the helmet well I had to buy a new one and about the bike everything was done including the wiring harness as the fog lights I installed had to be spliced into the wiring harness so it caught fire, spend 30k on the bike including the engine fully rebuild and now it's running like new had done a 12 days tour to meghalaya plus many 6-700kms ride no problem nothing, all that crash all that money that's all part of biking and money spend on the things we love is a money well spend, bikelife that's is...

    Yeah, the Hungry bertha RE 500!! I own the same motorcycle with a different paint scheme, it hasn't broken down on me yet, touch wood, but the parts prices even 2 years after, post the bike production stopping, remains the same. Which is definitely not fair !!! but like you said, the bike feels really good !! She is a big bertha after-all , so other than the improved torque and a tiny gain in HP the bike still rides best at manageable RPM's only. However, if you think about it, Faith is a demanding girl, just like my bertha, she wants you to put in that extra effort, they become a part of us, our lives, maybe that's a part of what the 100 year old RE legacy is about. These are tough machines, and can definitely hold their own, take a big beating. Love your rides man !! Keep up the good work, all the best.

    I totally feel you dude.I had a similar failure when i was coming back from kerala.I had almost spend around 30k by now and it took me many months to fix it all. I can understand how bad u feel when u wake up in morning ,see this beauty and at last can't ride it.It took me a lot of effort both mentally and money wise to fix it.I had to change complete wiring,starter motor(twice),carborator,typres,battery and hell lot .At last all i can say is, i would be pleased if some person from RE looks into this video and understand how bad it feels when u have a legacy bike like this ,but u never want to understand customer satisfaction by making parts a little cheaper,more reliable and atleast with decent warranty period.Sorry for such a long post ,but i almost bursted when i saw u having ti face the same.

    Hey buddy, I have had the fuel pump issue twice, changed it once with original RE and presently finding ways to dodge the bullet second time, Had the swing arm issue once and got the same solution that you have got done in your bike (old iron bushes) and it had been perfect for last 30k in almost 03 years. I second your advice that you should be with the bike and try to understand it when some mechanic is working on it. I have been doing it for along and it has helped a lot, really.

    This video will surely help first time RE buyers to decide whether to go with 350cc or 500cc, or, anyone who likes to upgrade. I know heart will say 500 cc but brain will ask for 350cc.Yes, money matters.The wiring system,fuel pump,self motors and several other spare parts are too costly for 500cc.The life of EFI system depends lots on petrol quality. And as you are a moto-vlogger, you don’t have any choice for re-fueling from any specific fuel station.The knick of cable running through the the neck of RE has a congenital problem.RE engineers must think on it.Somehow Bajaj’s infamous ad “Hathi mat palo” is true. But once again touring on RE is something different.Always.Keep up good works.

    Such are scary problems to face for a motorcycle. I dodged this 'bullet' somehow by buying a 'bullet' pun intended :D Standard bullet 500 carb version.
    I always felt skeptical that EFI may eventually break or give up. I can still work on a carb myself on the go but EFI is something I do not understand.
    I have traveled across India solo just like you and I did not face any major issues or repair somehow. I do upload travel videos on youtube and try to be very honest about problems i face on the road just like you do.
    But thunderbird 500 was never available, next time you face major issue change to carb. You may spend money that's alright but having this peace of mind that you bike will deliver no matter what is priceless..

    For your wiring please do as suggested. Get hold of particular gauge of wire but Teflon coated wire instead of plastic!! Just get approximate length. You can get it in Chennai electronics market.
    Then replace one by one wire. Teflon wire is used on aircraft, it is costly but extremely durable. Once you changed all the wires use good quality sleeving to cover those wires. Carefully give some heat to the sleeves using a propane torch to make the sleeves hug the wires. That's it, this way you have a robust wiring.

    5:44 well said my friend. I hate it when my mechanic keeps suggesting to go to the carbureted version where I clearly said that I don't want to.

    Amazing video Rohith, you are one of THE most wonderful moto vlogger after Mumbiker Nikhil and it pretty much some up my list. But in technicality, info and knowledge NOBODY can beat you. I feel so calm after watching your video.
    I ALMOST bought thunderbird, it was my dream since 2012-13 but in recent year the problem I have seen RE riders face is blunt pathetic and I dont want to show my fake love for the cult RE, I put my HARD EARNED money and I need a reliable machine, I have NEVER seen a RE rider totally satisfied with their machine. I bought Duke 390 two weeks back very happy and a little broken hearted as I wanted to get thunderbird. 30-45K is too much Rohith please think hard next time. We all love you and want the best for you!

    I wish you should soon start a business that will guide other riders to places based on a fee depending on locations around India. Making a trip in every three months will pay you some extra money. You guiding people will be very interesting.

    Once again I admire your dedication to RE. Reliability appears to be a common problem with many other RE owners on TH-cam. It was on my mind to recommend a 2004 BMW R1150GS for reliability then you started listing the cost of each component you replaced. Even at a total cost of 45000 rupees ($699 USD) that is reasonably inexpensive compared to the same components from BMW. So, even with the reliability challenges, the RE is the more economical choice. May you and Faith have many more wonderful adventures. If it weren’t for adversity we would have no fun at all.

    The metal bush, is actually good. I have the 350 Thunderbird twinspark for the past 9.5 years, and its just working fine. Earlier the plastic ones broke within a year or so.
