  • Welcome to The Irish School of Farriery Virtual Tour! We hope that this
video provides you with an insight into the QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Craft Farriery Apprenticeship Training in Ireland and some useful information on how to become an Apprentice in The Irish School of Farriery.
Farriery Ireland, formerly known as The Irish Farriery Authority, has on its
board and management committee representatives from the farriery profession, as well as the thoroughbred and non-thoroughbred sectors of the horse industry.
Working closely with the Irish Master Farriers' Association, Farriery
Ireland established the Irish School of Farriery in 1990 to train, promote
and support the profession of Farriery in Ireland. The School operates a
full time 4 year Farriery Apprenticeship course governed by SOLAS - the Irish state agency tasked with building a world class Further Education & Training (FET) sector.
The Candidate must be at least 16 years of age and have 5 D Grades in the Junior Certificate examination or equivalent. State examinations from other jurisdictions will be taken into consideration. Higher educational qualifications and other requirements may be sought by employers.
During their apprenticeship, the apprentices spend a total of 40 weeks within the School (Phases 2 (20 weeks), 4 (10 weeks) and 6 (10 weeks)) and the remainder of their time with their employing farrier (Phases 1, 3, 5 & 7). Course modules include, but are not limited to: Forging, Horseshoeing, Business, Equine Science and Husbandry - the Apprentices enhancing their knowledge and skills as they complete and advance through the Phases.
Upon completion, Apprentices are awarded a SOLAS QQI (Quality and
Qualifications Ireland) Level 6 Advanced Craft of Farriery Certificate. This
certificate ensures that those entering the profession are trained to a
    consistently high standard.
Farriery Ireland runs the Irish School of Farriery with the aim of
educating, training and certifying competent persons, enabling them to
become part of the Official Register of Farriers in Ireland. It is the only
School to offer accredited training to farriery apprentices in the Republic
of Ireland and the course is highly regarded around the world.
