Everything about this episode was fantastic! The voice acting, the choreography, the editing, the writing... everything about it was hands down fantastic! Can't wait to see Episode 2.
HERE COMES A BIG BOY REVIEW Alrighty So! DRAGON BALL BOKEN EPISODE 1! WOOOOO BOY! For a first episode, you've blown it out of the water! It does everything a first episode is supposed to very very well [Giving us a introduction to the cast, gives us a feel for what the series holds, all of that!] The camera angles, alongside what Platinum said are one of my favorite parts about this episode. All of them are so unique and different from what I've seen in other fanfics and machinama so keep that up! Before I get to my next 2 points, I will say some of the dialouge did seem a TAD bit generic but with some of the was it was executed it works out fine. NOW THE CHARACTER INTERACTIONS AND THE CHARACTERS This first ep honestly has some of my favorite bits of character interactions BY FAR! Nobody feels like they are "just there." and I LOVE IT! From Brandon to Ada to Axus to Joe. I should also mention the Voice Acting is on POINT! There are a few audio problems but nothing to major. SHOUTOUT TO JAZZ AND HIS FIRST MAJOR ROLE! MY BOY YOU BLEW IT OUT OF THE WATER! Now, The fights. This has been some of the best fight choreography I've seen in a series/fanfic/machinama in like...A LONG TIME! EVERY PUNCH, EVERY KICK, EVERY STRUGGLE! I LOVED ALL OF IT! The Xenoverse and UT footage you made blend really REALLY WELL! This is only a MINOR fight too so I cannot wait until a major fight happens! Overall this EP gets a soild 8.5/10 A fantastic start to a tremendous series. I'm so so proud of you Brandon, you have no idea how big this really is. You're gonna go far son.
OKAY MAN GOOD SHIT!! My only problems with the episode are minor tbh. But first the pros: - Excellent use of the Conton landscape and the use of extra foley sound effects added because it really makes the whole thing seem that much more innovative (Making sure the scenes always had background wind effects/water sounds, making each step able to be heard, his stomach growling at one point, even the way the episode ended from the song was a great touch). Something I love about fanfics is how each of us figures out a new way to change the game, and imo to be honest with you, I think you've really caught on to something because unlike these other fanfics, this didn't feel OVERLY Dragonball. (Not everyone was a Son or a Briefs - everyone has original FULL NAMES first and last) - Great performance from EVERYONE in the episode, but especial props to you, Legendosaur, and AnimePancakes for sounding the most human with their delivery. (Sometimes the dialogue sounds obviously read off a script, which is a big pet peeve to me too, but its basically unavoidable especially when working non-profit) - GREAT transitioning from XV2-UT in the Brandon v Axus fight - LOVED this scene: 28:54 - If you look at all the UT scenes (and in the future youll realize its all PS3 games) youll see theres a thin black line on the left border thats not there when you use XV2 that I crop out because its just a little continuity error to me that once I saw it I couldn't unsee it lol (A big pet peeve of mine I realized a while back you can see it in Act 1 of Element X but I fixed it come Act 2) heres a time stamp for example 27:42 - Another gripe I had was the amount of dead air at certain points, for example when Brandon was looking around for Trunks I think some dialogue could've been used - you wanna utilize the most of your space at all times if you can (But this was masked by your use of the landscape and various shots of different angles making it feel more like a SHOW and less like a FANFIC, so this isn't really a BIG issue at all) - Also another minor detail I would've done a little differently, to make it easier to understand which character is which, if you put the cast in order of appearance in the description that'd be cool. Solid af. 4.2/5 I definitely can tell you took your time
FINALLY. Some GOOD FUCKING FOOD. I've been awaiting your series' release for quite some time now. This was probably the most solid first episode from a DB machinima ever but more importantly, one of the most solid episodes in the past year. Not to mention the series' debut couldn't have come at a better time. Now that doesn't mean it's perfect. On a technical basis, it was pretty rocky. Video AND game resolution was low; texture pop-ins every where. And the framerate was rocky. The in-game textures were really off and the characters' outlines were kinda weird. As soon as you can, I'd invest in equipment. The dialogue in the script was as expected: generic. Especially Brandon's (ironically). Which is part of his appeal? I guess? Everyone else was fine. It got the point across. What I loved about the episode was the ambitious camera angles. Some of them were a little over the top, but for the most part, it was great. There was a scene @22:00 where they were in the sky and the concept was awesome. But the characters kept fading in and out and they were moving as if they were hitting a barrier. It could've been smoother. The background shouldve been distorting to create a distancing effect for the viewer. Little things like that with the editing would've went a long ways in some scenes. The voices for the characters were a little low as well. I know audio is your biggest thing for this and it showed with a lot of the sound effects. **Now MY biggest thing**: Fight Choreography. You nailed what makes a good fight in a machinima. The fight with Axus was well paced and vividly thought out. It didn't seem like straight up improv. You utilized the different games very well and it was clear to me that you studied other works instead of just watching and emulating. Keep that shit up. I live for it. Soundtrack: it fit the build. lmfao Pacing: It was pretty good. I hope you continue to make the episodes in this quality or better. I really hope this series continues on this track and releases on a more regular basis than... Other series. (EDIT: CHARACTER DESIGNS/NAMES: This is what got me interested in the first place. I hate when machinimas that have nothing to do with Japanese nature use Japanese names for no reason or make up names that *sound* Japanese just for the sake of it. It's pointless and inorganic! You have characters like "Axus", "Brandon", and "Ada" (I dislike your series' pronunciation on this name. It's like "Adda" or some shit lmfao) and these names really put me into YOUR WORLD and helps me associate certain qualities with only your series. Same with the character designs! They're really well crafted and you clearly thought about what someone would ACTUALLY WEAR, despite Axus having a whole Glock on his side like he's ready for Modern Warfare.) Overall: 7/10 (7 AINT BAD. IT'S REALLY GOOD ON MY SCALE.) You got this shit. I know you do. (ALSO. WAS JAZZ'S "STUPID" A TAKE ON THE WAY I SAY IT?! LMFAOOOOO AND I THOUGHT LEGENDOSAUR WAS HOLLOW WHEN HE SAID THERE YOU ARE LAMFVFBGHGUYDG)
I’m honestly hooked to the series now and I rlly wanna see what this series has in store. It’s really badass and humorous too. Best combination, keep this up🙌
Congratulations on the release of your series Brandon!! And what a release it was, you really knocked it out of the park with this, fantastic start and I can't wait for more. Here is are some of my thoughts about the episode 1. The Pacing was fantastic, it's extremely hard to get pacing perfect especially on the first try but I think you did a great job with it. The scenes from the beginning fight with Alexander to the bullies to the search for Trunks to meeting Ada, Joe and Axus all flow into each other extremely smoothly.(is that how you say that?) 2. Sound, every single sound effect seemed to fit whatever was going on at the time and the volume always melded with what was going on in the background. OST selection was good and there was no scene where the background song felt out of place. I enjoyed all the performances but one thing I must say is that Axus' audio quality threw me off, there's not much I can do to fix that since a new mic isn't very high on my list of things I need to buy so I guess we'll just have to deal with it. 3. Dialogue; I can't even lie to you, a lot of the dialogue feels formulaic and bland. You did a good job on portraying characters but I think you could stand to work on it. Many times throughout the dialogue involves characters repeating something they or someone else said before verbatim which I think is a big no no for writing interesting interactions. I think Axus probably got the most interesting lines but even then they could've worked much better with a little more pzazz 4. Choreography; That shit SLAPPED LMAO That's about it 7.5-8/10, G moment, keep it up Space Cowboy
Ayyy great job man, been waiting for this for a while and it hella delivered, editing is damn good nice usage of mixing up UT and XV2 the fights look great and you do a hella good job of keeping peeps invested really curious as to where you take it and want to find out more about the various charas
This is awesome. I honestly love what you're doing with all these shots. And I couldn't tell what it was, but I noticed that the colors really pop in this series. I also love some of the filters and edits in the opening and especially on the ending. Voice Acting is really great too and I'm already invested in the cast from just this 1 episode. Music placement was on point too. It has alot of Heart in it and I'm excited to see where it goes.
Damn he hit axus so hard it replayed 3 different times in 3 angles 😂. I’m honestly speechless. It’s only been one episode and It’s already in my top 5 greatest fan made shows. Brandon, I hope good luck comes your way for this project. Thank you for this masterpiece of an episode. My only regret is that I didn’t see it sooner.
Brandon. I am so proud of you. Watching this episode for the 2nd time as I'm writing this and this is my genuine critique on the episode. FIGHT SCENES - As somebody obsessed with proper cohesive but flashy fight coreo, you hit the ball not just out of the park. BUT OUT OF THE STRATOSPHERE. I was hooked. I have rewatched Brandon punching Axus FIVE TIMES. Considering these fights aren't even major I can only imagine how you'll improve and coreograph your stuff in the future. This has been some of the best XV2-UT combo stuff I've ever seen, the only competitor I can think of atm is Chronicles. I honestly have no advice in this area, you're doing perfectly fine. DIALOGUE - So not trying to reiterate what Plat said. But this is one of the flawed sides of the episode, nothing major. But fairly generic. However, it's a first episode and that's kinda to be expected. Everything gets the point across and gives off a very good first impression. Brandon's dialogue, while partially the most generic, encapsulates what I understand of his character incredibly well. SCENE BLOCKING - Incredibly well done. Beautiful camera angles, while some may be considered over the top depending on the scene. (Casual conversation won't always need amazing camera angles) I honestly appreciate how much effort was put into it, it's something you don't see too often and that I now hope to see more of not just in Boken but in all fanfics thanks to the addition of Photo mode in XV2. STORY - So I know more than some other people obviously. So I'm not gonna say much, but in one episode you have managed to set up Brandon, Ada, Joe, Axus, Alexander, and even Trunks for character arcs that I cannot wait to see unfold. TECHNICALITIES - So I'm no expert on audio mixing or the way certain resolutions work. However, I will definitely applaud you on your use of audio mixing which shines in the fights. Platinum said some things about resolution and stuff which I don't understand, but definitely make sure you pay attention to fix that up in the future. OST Selection - So this is really important for me. Music sets the vibe for what your series will be. And as you know, I've compared Boken to MHA a couple times, and your OST usage has most definitely established that same MHA vibe that I love. VOICE ACTING - Everyone. Every single person does a very solid job. Brandon, Sol, Gohan, Chris. Established and solid as usual. QB and Tiff did great, at the end of the day every one of them did a solid job. But in particular I just wanna shoutout to my boy JAZZ. Axus is the new character I love to hate to love. His performance is dope, especially for what I believe is his first major VA Role. Proud of you bro. All in all, this is the most solid first episode of a Fanfic I've seen since Voltage and Tenzo. You've lit a fire under the fanfic community I haven't seen in a very long time. I wish you all the best with Boken, and hope to see it in my sub box on a semi consistent basis. Ya sent off Gen 4 with a bang, and I love it. Overall Score: 8/10
Everything about this episode was fantastic! The voice acting, the choreography, the editing, the writing... everything about it was hands down fantastic! Can't wait to see Episode 2.
Same
I think it goes without saying but DAYUM does this episode go above and beyond in terms of quality! Great job Brandon!

- GREAT transitioning from XV2-UT in the Brandon v Axus fight
- LOVED this scene: 28:54
- If you look at all the UT scenes (and in the future youll realize its all PS3 games) youll see theres a thin black line on the left border thats not there when you use XV2 that I crop out because its just a little continuity error to me that once I saw it I couldn't unsee it lol (A big pet peeve of mine I realized a while back you can see it in Act 1 of Element X but I fixed it come Act 2) heres a time stamp for example 27:42
- Another gripe I had was the amount of dead air at certain points, for example when Brandon was looking around for Trunks I think some dialogue could've been used - you wanna utilize the most of your space at all times if you can (But this was masked by your use of the landscape and various shots of different angles making it feel more like a SHOW and less like a FANFIC, so this isn't really a BIG issue at all)
- Also another minor detail I would've done a little differently, to make it easier to understand which character is which, if you put the cast in order of appearance in the description that'd be cool.
Solid af. 4.2/5
