Paul, This looks like it's going to be a great build. Looking forward to seeing the ongoing progress. The image of the bow of a carrier with the two gun tubs just below the flight deck looks like it might be a later war modification, of which ship I don't know, but almost certainly not the CV-8 Hornet. You also asked what viewers are building. I'm not currently building, as I am presently in the process of changing/rebuilding my stash to focus on Korean and Viet Nam era aircraft (e.g., O-2, OV-10 Bronco, A-1H/J Skyraider, etc.) . I'll see if I can find any photos or other information regarding the location of accommodation ladders on the CV-8, but a preliminary (and very limited) search did not turn up anything.
Great start to a new project Paul, so far so good.. we're off to a great start. That's a very courageous thing to do, go for the waterline set up, if your interested in waterline dioramas, there's a channel called "studio blue ocean", there's a 1/350 USS Yorktown on that done in waterline with a beautiful end result in an ocean diorama. That image of the carrier's hull at the start might be a reference or the image of one of her sisters.. Yorktown or Enterprise.. I'm not saying it is, but you do get that, like in my book of the Gneisenau.. there's a couple images of the Scharnhorst in that giving references to the Gneisenau.. but yeah that might still be the Hornet, but it's still a shot I suppose. An honour to know we're both doing ships, my 1/200 Gneisenau is slow but surely coming along, the main hull is nearly all set.. or close to it, now I can start on the superstructure. @@plasticmonkey5594 Thanks so much Paul, yeah I'm now working on the superstructure, main hull is effectively almost all sorted going to be trying some weathering, put a tiny and I do mean.. TINY dab and streaks of rust on occasional areas, only tiny itsy bitsy streaks a dabs on certain areas.. though some areas with glue excess have been covered with rust colour to add some artistic license, I'm trying to avoid too much rust because I want my ship to be as pristine as possible. Yeah studio blue ocean has some beautiful ships with dioramas made, well worth a look. Stay safe and happy modelling mate 👍

Your Hornet is the earlier one (CV-8) which was a Yorktown Class, the Later one is CV-12 which is an Essex Class. nice decision going water line.

Trumpeter rarely gets the hulls correct on any of their ships.
