I have very fond memories of these engines. My dad sold Beatty Bros. washing machines in northern Alberta and gave me one. I used it to power various contraptions including a go-cart that I drove to school in grade 6. Thanks for posting.
Great video, thanks! I have one very similar (if not the same model) which used to belong to my paternal grandfather. He had it rigged up to power a saw in one of his outbuildings. Would love to get it running someday, but carburetor is long gone and not sure where to source a new one.
hey. i got a iron horse much like this one but i can do with some help in 3:43 where the cap that connects fuel line to carburetor it has vacuum leak where the tip broke off and i went to pull it out it was wrapped with old clothing strings but now i got this issue and i wanna get it going . its my pride and joy i find my best choice to be rubber o ring or something
I haven't had a scanner in years. There's quite a bit of information at the "Antique Small Engine Collectors Club" online. Manual reprints are available on e-Bay for about $9 with free shipping from Alberta, Canada. Just search "Johnson Iron Horse". They really are a great little motor! The first thing I ever do is clean the points and spark plug. If you can get spark, and there's some compression... it should make a bang. Good luck!
Thanks for posting this helpful vid, just picked up a working A R-401 in the process of restoring it doesnt look like theres two many parts out there, luckly im only missing the pull cord and the carb has been diddled with but runs sweet will post vid, cheers
Ah, memories of my first carbon monoxide poisoning. Mom and i doing laundry in the porch and the exhaust was loose. I opened the door and when the fresh air hit, I fell straight on my face.
@carnivore10 Thanks! Now that the joy of winter is upon us, I too will be working to make some more silent rusty ones noisy again. I never paint them though... I prefer the rusty patina to glossy new paint.

Something magically beautiful about seeing an old engine run.
Great video, Just picked one up my self but would like to find out what year it was build. Model # 434
and serial # 75367. Made in Canada.
You have to love the old motors still running to this day, much better than the rubbish that is produced today.
Great video! Cool old engine!
We had one at the farmhouse into the mid 50's
Dad found it started easier in cold by heating up the plug with
a blow torch
I have one identical to this one runs like a. Champ x401 model don't know what year

I have one of these on a Bob A Lawn reel type lawnmower. It needs an aluminum woodruff key but I don't know where to find them. Any ideas?

Probably just corroded points and spark plug. They seemed to have a pretty good coil... Post some video when you get it running.
Love it
@Hanglands Ahhh Thank you. It takes years of practice though, you know!
@Hanglands Was hoping nobody would notice that...
