  • In this video we are looking at the only 5 credit cards you ever need to have in your wallet. We will be talking about the best travel credit cards and the best cash back credit cards so that you can create the perfect 5 credit card setup for the long-term based on your own preferences!
    Personally, I only carry around 4 or 5 credit cards with me every day so I try to pick the best credit cards for travel because I know that I can get the most value from those cards. I think it’s a common misconception that in order to get value out of credit card usage, you need to be carrying 20 cards or more which obviously is tough to manage. But the truth is that if you can identify what you’re looking for in a credit card setup, then you can keep it simple and stick with only 5 credit cards while still getting a lot back.
    Most of the credit cards that we’re going to cover in this video are very easy to use, so I would say that they are some of the best credit cards for beginners if you’re new to the credit card game. This means that you don’t have to overthink and plan too much when it comes to optimizing what credit card you should be using for certain purchases. So if you are looking for something very simple with a lot of long-term value, then I would suggest choosing either one of the cash back or travel credit card setups that we’ll be covering in this video!

    To me optimal cash back cards is yearly 4-5% no annual fee in the top 3 spending categories -- groceries, restaurant/fast food, and gas. That would be the AAA credit card for 5% groceries, US Bank Altitude Go at 4% for restaurant/fast food, and Citi Custom Cash at 5% gas.

    Personally, I’m team travel all the way right now, but I do love the simplicity of a good cash back setup too. I think a mix is a good way to go, which is why I love Chase so much. Being able to redeem for 1 cpp in cash-back form and also transfer out to travel partners for at least 2 cpp or more makes their card super viable for someone trying to play both sides of the credit card game. Super solid video here Daniel. The editing makes me more and more jealous by the video! 🤣

    I always love getting to see how people build out setups! For me it a seems like the SavorOne is a bit redundant as a “food card” in this cash back setup since the Freedom Flex and the Amex Blue Cash Everyday each cover restaurants and dining respectively. Might be useful if one were spending a lot on entertainment (or Uber for the 10x back), but as a “food card” it’s maybe not really needed? It’s a great no-annual-fee alternative to the Gold Card in the travel-centric setup though IF one were inclined to get the VX instead of the Platinum. And if one went that route then that covers the catch-all, and the Freedom Unlimited could make way for the Bilt card in the travel setup. Oh, so many options! 😂

    Saw a similar cash back setup, but they used the freedom cards instead of the Discover and Double Cash. I assume the switch was for the sign up bonuses as the Discover and DC don't have one.
    Solid setup since each card can be leveraged in multiple places. Bet you could switch it up every quarter and have a different combo for a couple years.

  • @chrystal790

    I am team cash back, so for me the perfect set up will be us bank altitude go for dining, AAA daily card for grocery, BOA custom cash for online shopping, citizens world MasterCard for everything else. Most of these card doesn’t charge foreign transaction fee and none of them has annual fee. I don’t really like AMEX card because there is a change some places don’t accept them and I don’t wanna bring a card out just to learn some places don’t accept them

    Thank you very much Daniel! Love your videos, and I find them very helpful! So much so that I got myself into the Chase Trifecta with the CSP, CFF, and CFU. Love the set up and the fact that both Chase Freedom Flex came with a 1 year 5x back on gas and Chase Freedom Unlimited 5x on grocery for the first year. My set up is currently perfect, but I can't help but think once these 2 categories go away... I was curious if you could give me your thoughts on the Triple AAA Daily advantage card? Or even better if you could do a video review! The reason I bring this card up is that it would fit the gaps perfectly for complimenting where the Chase Trifecta lacks. First off it's a Visa card and can be used at Costco getting back 3%! 5% back at normal grocery stores, and 3% back on gas or EV. I'm leaning towards this vs. having to get both the Savor One and the Citi Custom Cash to cover all of my bases. I know this is a nuanced question, but I appreciate any insight as this Triple AAA card is rarely talked about on TH-cam, but has powerful earning potential.

  • @callofduty60
    @callofduty60 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have the same set up
    Except I DONT use the Amex gold.
    It’s not worth the AF imo because I don’t use the stuff needed to get the $240 back for the year on it.
    Also the sapphire pref. Is good enough for food purchases at 3x points (restaurants/ online groceries) and you can use the custom cash for 5% off grocery stores… then pay cash for gas at the pump, which is cheaper than hat they charge when you pay with card anyway.
    I don’t like the idea of having points with chase AND Amex it would take too long to get enough points with both to book travel flights with… meanwhile carrying the AF on the cards over time reduces its value.
    I think having all my point on chase is better since I’d be able to stack up the points faster and book travel more frequently. There’s value in that for sure.
    If your a type of person who uses the Gold AMEX in the way u need to get the $240 back then it makes much more sense, but I don’t. I feel like a credit card should fit your life style not us changing our habits to fit a card
    Great vid!

      Yeah I think most people will travel at least once per year if not once every 2 years at a minimum so a travel setup is better at saving money for either flights or hotels in some way. Hey Daniel for a hotel card under $100 (disregard 5/24 or amex rules 760 credit score) which would be your choice. Personally im between world of Hyatt or IHG premier. Id love your opinion on which to get.

    Something I’ve noticed looking through these cards and trying to build my own credit set up is that a lot of them exclude Walmart and warehouse stores, which is a big chunk of my grocery spending. Does anyone have any recommendations to maximize the amount of rewards for this?

    If you were to recommend a 2 card setup for the average Joe to apply for and hold forever for a bit of both cash back and travel points, what would you recommend?

    • @bossnarwhale7342
      @bossnarwhale7342 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sort of end up doing this, though I don’t think it’s for everyone. I do most of my grocery shopping at Whole Foods (make fun of me if you must) and do most of my “regular” shopping on Amazon. Amazon card gets me 5% back at both of those places. Almost everything else ends up on the world of Hyatt card so I can spend 15k for the free night certificate. Only thing I would add is the Bilt card to give you the super power of paying rent with a CC and get points (that I can transfer to Hyatt).
      A more common man version of this would be the Venture X and Savor cards from capital one. Could see that being a lot more useful to those outside my spending habits.

    Travel rewards require way too much time to configure maximization. Not to mention, it limits your flight options when trying to book flights with rewards.

    I will ask this here because I couldn't, for the life of me, find out online or in other videos. I'm slowly getting my card setup but is it worth it to put a charge on my older cards every month to get more on time monthly payments? Or should I just put one every 6 months or so to just keep it open and use more money on my better cards?

    • @andrewsandoz6655
      @andrewsandoz6655 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Closing out a card can impact your credit history but it probably wouldn’t hurt to keep making small on time payments. Probably won’t find an answer on the internet but it is more personal choice.

    • @devlin76
      @devlin76 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have 100% on time payments, then the number of new payments added does not matter much. If you missed a payment in the last seven years, then every on time payment you add to your history is going to help the percentage for on time payments go up.

    My most common used cards right now... (OG 2014) Chase Freedom for Quarterly 5% --- CSP for intro bonus/travel/streaming/dining -- Amex Gold for intro bonus/ Dining/groceries -- CapitalOne Venture X for intro Bonus/primary travel card/catch all for 2x ---- Apple Digital Card for 3% back at apple vendors, using as gas card at Exxon/Mobil.... My approach was I wanted to hit the Intro bonus/travel options and build credit resume with Chase/AMEX/C1... so I have a lot of flexibility/diversity to transfer to tons of partners.

    • @Daniel_Braun
      @Daniel_Braun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would not get a sign up bonus if you upgrade to any of those cards - only if you open a new card account with one of those options. So typically what people do is they keep the Freedom Student card open as a separate account that continues to age for no annual fee

      Thank you for clarifying and HUGE THANKS for making these vids!!! As a college student wanting to get a good financial foundation, your content made me feel better about making important decisions to help my future self! Just in the last six months I was able to raise my score an avg. 40+ pts across my vgpt3.0’s and 50+ pts across my Fico8’s. Before, I just had two installments of fafsa loans sitting there, but now, I have a D-it cb (since Aug 22), plus that Chase FS (since Dec 22). I meant to wait the recc. 6mos, but something happened and it ended up actually applying when I was just trying to see what my limit would be haha.
