That shot of Gamera staring down Iris in the rain is a remarkably well shot sequence and as you say shows how suitmation can still have a place in the digital age. It genuinely looks real and its hauntingly beautiful. Everything about that battle in Kyoto is just perfect and man that ending with all the Gyaos converging on Japan? Shit, on the one hand that's fun way to leave the trilogy open-ended and apocalyptic but on the other this series was painfully short and I wish we got one more at least. Revenge of Iris is simply put one of the best Kaiju films ever made and easily tops anything that came out of Godzilla's Heisei era (only Biollante and Destroyah come close to this). I still hope we get this version of Gamera again in the future either with a new Japanese soft reboot or a big Hollywood adaptation (preferably directed by Guillermo Del Toro).

I love the theme of this one in particular, it really showed that monsters even when they're on ''your side'' they're still dangerous and hurt innocent people when they aren't trying to. This world isn't meant for them anymore so they're too big to co-exist and people are bound to die when they clash.
@@alexyoutubechannel8175 He isn't. Most of the fights of the Heisei era are beam spam and horrifically bad choreography. Plus the Gamera trilogy has much better writing and special effects.
I said this many times in other videos and I’ll say it here: anyone who dismisses tokusatsu as men in cheesy rubber suits stomping on unconvincing model sets should be shown the practical effects work in this film. Especially the Shibuya scene.
There were some pretty campy Godzilla films back then too. Thats what makes todays appreciation that much greater. Through it all they thrived and survived.

Gamera is hauntingly beautiful in this movie, my favorite aspect of the film. is showing how the "hero" Kaiju isn't fighting to be a hero but out of instinct. Hands down the best Kaiju film for me. Great work with your channel UFTD, been a fan for about a year now. Love your content. What'd you think of the controversial ending?

I was lucky enough to see this film in the theater in Tokyo when it came out while here for work. 25 years later I arrived in Kyoto station yesterday not even thinking about this. I was just trying to figure out how to get to my hotel. Once I walked into this area of the station and looked up, I INSTANTLY recognized it! I started looking for clips of the final battle so I can find the camera angels and take a few pictures. That’s what brought me here to your video today. I can’t believe it’s been so long since this came out. How time flies.
I really like how this kinda made me think of the first Gamera. I mean honestly I wonder if Toshiro was supposed to be crazy or something. I mean to be fair in the first movie Gamera wasn't evil he just was an animal and needed to eat. 'Gamera is just an animal! He needs to eat' and yet strangely saved a kid. I love how this time Gamera seems to save a kid on total accident and the kid is visibly scared after the incident. Makes me think of the scene on the bridge from Godzilla 2014 where the kids are screaming in fear. Sharp contrast to the 'COOL MOM!' kid from the first Bayformers where Prime and Bone Crusher are wrestling on the highway.
While this film and therefore, the trilogy does end on a rather anti-climatic note with Gamera preparing to go against the seemingly infinite hordes of Gyaos with humanity at his side, director Shusuke Kaneko states something around the lines of Gamera having a chance of winning, it all depends if you believe he can win, which is safe to say Gamera and humanity will ultimately win in the end.

Favorite Kaneko film. It's the one film from him where the spiritual aspect doesn't bother me, because it's well done and the atmosphere is so great here. Also i like the characters in this one a lot and the kaiju stuff is phenomenal. I might not be a big fan of the other 3 kaiju films he directed, but i love this one. Fantastic review as always!
Bro,even though it is suit mation it makes you actually feel like the Kaijus are there. It makes you feel like this happened in real life. Unlike Godzilla at the time the kaiju fights weren’t a cluster fuck of lasers and people explaining what’s happening, no it was very hard impacts to little to no music with damage and very hard punches. This movie is just amazing.
I will say that this movie really was good about giving me different emotions towards Gamera. I mean the first two movies you cheered or felt bad when he got hurt. This time you feel horror as he goes wild against the Hyper Gyaos and you wonder if he was always like this, got desperate or because he severed his connection with Asagi? Yet there he is at the end waiting for Ayana to wake up so patiently and he even might give her a bit of life to heal like he did to Asagi at the end of Guardian. You're just like 'is this the same creature we saw in Shibuya?'
Honestly their isn't a lot of trilogy's in the kaiju genre. The only other two I can think of is the rebirth of mothra trilogy which was OK if not childish on a level similar to showa Gamera. And that god awful Godzilla anime trilogy which the less said about that travesty the better.

This came out a year after the Western 1998 Godzilla. It's incredible how much more impressive this film is than that. Goes to show what you can do if you put actual soul into your film, and you actually believe in and understand the genre that you're working in. This is one of the finest daikaiju films ever made, bar none.

I want to seriously thank you for making these reviews. They're what finally convinced me to give these movies a shot, and they didn't disappoint. That said, I wish there was a better way to watch them legally than Mill Creek's blu-ray release. This movie in particular was gutted pretty hard in that release, featuring a broken and blatantly unfinished subtitle track. Maybe one day we can hope for a western release that does this movie justice.
After Gojira, this is the best kaiju film ever imo. It's mature, introspective, strange, terrifying, emotionally-complex, & gorgeous. The ending is perfect; you couldn't realistically progress in this timeline past this movie the way the films were changing one to the next.
A quick appreciation here is I like how in the final battle Gamera reaches into Iris's chest to save Ayana at the cost of his own safety because though its not shown in detail if it was an act of kindness or practicality, he seems to still aspire to be a guardian and protector, despite having to become so destructive to fight the Gyaos, he hears her cries for help to save her from the monster of vengence she created in herself and with no hesitation he rescues her. I think its my favorite scene, especially cause of the scene showing his palm gleaming white, cutting against the darkness of Iris, it feels like his still present inner hero shone through and reached out to her.
I don't know if it's my nostalgia blinders, but this is my all-time favorite kaiju film. The layered story-telling that deals with themes of revenge, mysticism, and the consequences of humanity's arrogance, all while having the confidence to leave some aspects up to interpretation, coupled with, to this day, some of the best monster designs and effects in a kaiju film, complex characters, and gripping pacing, make this a pretty mind-blowing film.
Besides being some of the best kaiju films ever I like how especially this film kind of make you question "yeah he appears to be good and helping us but is he that much better when he's knocking down more of the city then they are?"
Definitely. I think a good way to describe it is that it’s the best “Showa” Gamera movie. I was won over by the early cuteness, but the movie certainly did not forget the gore either.
I remember avoiding it for a long time and still haven't seen it. I'm a little triggered that they gave the Gamera's generic dinosaur roars though. If it got a sequel I'm hoping bit by bitToto grows up and matures since I'm not a fan of his look. Zedus looks neat and I welcome him to the gallery.
Irrelevant402 That’s right! I was also slightly bothered by the generic roar. I thought they were saving it for the very end. when Toto is finally called Gamera I thought he would do his roar, but nope!
If not for Gojira, this would easily be the greatest kaiju film of all time. It may even be better than Gojira - as it has stronger and more fleshed out characters.
If there is a legend that has a warning inscribed on a cavern or tomb, ALWAYS do what they say, and Ayana did all this for her step-brother, that's unexpected.
This film was a lovely one to be sure! It has my favorite gamera design by far with a pretty interesting cast of human characters on both spectrums. Although I don’t care fir its larval state p, when it actually starts to grow Iris is a spectacle to behold and has a pretty interesting motivation given its bond to a person.
I've enjoyed Gamera in the past, and seriously, this movie has game. This was a very well made production, it caught me off guard as I was lazy one evening and just started watching it and was surprised at how dark it was, this wasn't a silly attempt to cash in but an honest attempt...nice move.
that ending though. it leaves you seeing Gamera defeating Iris, but a new threat in droves comes and Gamera is stil weak from his fight, moving forward to face the challenge, even when the odds aren't in his favor. It genuinely feels like that scene captures the franchise itself. It managed to pull a win, but even that isn't enough to secure Gamera's victory or that he'll be around.
I'd go as far to say that this is the best kaiju film, period. That's coming from a massive godzilla fanboy. Everything just comes together so well, and that closing sequence of gamera surrounded by flames and the gyaos converging on him, just goosebumps man.
I think this movie is a perfect sequel to the first film because gyaos makes an appearance in this film and the nightmare of hinasaka it has a strong continuity to the original film because it referenced to the final battle of the first film
I only recently got into Godzilla, and now I guess I'll have to get around to watching the Heisei Gamera films as well. Since, apparently, they're amazing.
What if they made a Godzilla crossover where Gamera assumes Godzilla to be evil when it’s actually Godzilla Jr. after Destoroyah and Gamera has ancient history with Godzilla but at the end Gamera lets his vengeance take over leading to an emotional rollercoaster of a fight that ends in Gameras death because he couldn’t let go of his vengeance.
I Love How Tired Gamera Looks in this Movie, Poor Dude has been Killing Gyaos Nonstop Since Legion and Then Iris Comes Up, but He Looks So Determined too Like he’s Going to Defend the Earth for as Long as it Takes No Matter How Tired and Beat Up He is
Your praise of that initial battle reminds of another reason I don't particularly like Gamera 2: in Gamera 2, the military has time to clear a town for the monsters to fight in. My three biggest takeaways from Gamera 3 are the tracking shot when the general decides to attack Gamera first, Gamera shooting fire through his severed arm, and the ending with the multiple Gyaos.
GMK is probably the only other movie that comes close to this one (and it has a very similar feeling to it). Gamera has been completely deconstructed to full anti hero. My only two complaints would be the limited Kaiju action and the open ending, but the human cast actually makes up for it. I think my favourite character is Kurata and his hypnotising eyes. I kinda wish the movie would have explained Iris a little better, what it actually was and why it was created. Regardless, this is easily one of the best and meaningful Kaiju movies I've ever seen. I wish Gamera would've gotten more of these. I give this one 5 stars out of 5.
This wasn't just the end of the Gamera Trilogy, it was also the final Heisei Era Kaiju film; the end of an era that began in 1984. It is the pinnacle of Kaiju Eiga. Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys is what most trilogy closers strive to be, regardless of genre. 5/5
After you finish with Gamera, what will be your next kaiju films or series? I personally would love to see your thoughts on the original Ultraman series then move to the new Netflix Anime that continues the original series in a weird way to be honest.
hope we get another film in this series as i really loved this reboot and definitely feels they went as all out as they could showing great suitmation, awesome 90's anime ova esque feel(that i definitely got when i got introduced to these films by adv's promo's.) with it's beautiful music & ideas. and a great story with that shows consequences to gamera's actions with the shibuya attack being the few times i got frightened in a kaiju movie(outside shin godzilla/1954.) with how disturbing it is seeing tons of people die and the city become apocalyptic from the atlantean turtle becoming desperate from his lost connection to humanity making him justifiably viewed as their enemy & spiritual connection(that i really love in these movies and like godzilla's starting to take cues from in gmk & monsterverse/would love this version of gamera to appear.:3) with the embodiment of revenge iris becomes blurring it acting on it's own will/plans,the gyaos or ayana(especially when she's being shown memories by it/floating in it's mind.) . was great seeing the older characters return(kinda wish we saw osaka with the main characters more in the finale instead of being nearly arrested.) that became my favorite kaiju humans showing they can be as important as the monsters and ending on a hauntingly ambiguous note that the only clue the creator leaves is if you believe gamera can win against that worldwide gyaos swarm.(which after everything the turtles been through honestly do think he can as despite the collateral and stress from desperation he did pretty well against the others across the world throughout the film/glad it got changed as originally it was going to be it's bleakest with everything destroyed or gone with only gamera left.)
The trilogy really makes you wish people did this treatment to a lot of other obscure kaiju
I personally would love a darker and edgier modernized version of "War of the Gargantuas" or "Space Amoeba" ;)
The Batman RN i concur
People prolly treat him like this because people have only seen the showa era films. The Heisi is miles better.

If these trilogy of heisei gamera films didn't exist i wouldn't be a gamera fan. Honestly these are the best kaiju films I've seen (apart from GMK)
Putting it out there now, ahead of time.
I really enjoyed Gamera The Brave!
Its a nice little one off film. definitely worthy of the Gamera name.
Noble Gas I did find the movie on TH-cam, but Toto has the Gamera roars
Another amazing review. I gotta get on watching this trilogy!
My trilogy ranking is
3. Attack of Legion
2. Revenge of Iris
1. Guardian of the universe
i cant rank them, im just a way too big of a Gamera fan. I like Gamera more then Gojira (plez dont attack meh)
@@smurf5320 I like Godzilla more but I will say this trilogy is better than most Godzilla movies
1) Iris
2) Legion
3) Guardian of the Universe
If not for Gojira, this would easily be the greatest kaiju film of all time. It may even be better than Gojira - as it has stronger and more fleshed out characters.
Granted Gamera has 2 previous films to have fully developed characters
@@alexyoutubechannel8175 Opinions. Look them up.
Great video as always, will you be tackling the Rebirth of Mothra films? I just started watching them for the first time and it's glorious Heisei Toho
Mothra 3!!!
I love Godilla hes my kaiju hands down....but the gamera heisei trilogy are simply the best kaiju movies ever made
With one big 1954 exception. But yeah this trilogy is amazing.
I would say that some godzilla movies are better. However, i must concede that this is one of the best trilogies ever.
A Gamera movie for the Ages !
Loved Gamera's design in this!
I literally forgot that the monsters were just people in suits
Oh shit me too lol
If there is a legend that has a warning inscribed on a cavern or tomb, ALWAYS do what they say, and Ayana did all this for her step-brother, that's unexpected.
Undoubtedly one of the finest kaiju eiga ever made. Maybe even THE finest. If only more films followed its lead.
This movie truly is satisfying. Such a fantastic piece
The best kaiju film ever made. I wish more monster movies were like this
I would say 2nd best
I've enjoyed Gamera in the past, and seriously, this movie has game. This was a very well made production, it caught me off guard as I was lazy one evening and just started watching it and was surprised at how dark it was, this wasn't a silly attempt to cash in but an honest attempt...nice move.
🎶You got the powerrrr🎶
*throws a knife at Iris*
*fail*
without question my favorite Gamera design.
that ending though.
it leaves you seeing Gamera defeating Iris, but a new threat in droves comes and Gamera is stil weak from his fight, moving forward to face the challenge, even when the odds aren't in his favor.
I need this series on Blu-ray. It's fantastic
You can see this movie's influence in terms of lighting, framing on Gareth Edwards when he made Godzilla 2014.
"Not the Kiajiu we deserve, but the Kiajiu we need"
Gamera uses SHINING FINGERRRRR
Does anyone here know where you can watch the Gamera 3 documentary directed by Hideaki Anno?
That's a part of the Blu-Ray heisei collection isn't it or is it on the DVD?
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective I don't know but would buy that if someone could confirm it it's on the disc.
@@chrisw451 I will take a look for you tonight bud.
I have that on VHS. I can’t watch it anymore without a player or old tv. 😢 sucks getting old. Me and the tech that is.
I only recently got into Godzilla, and now I guess I'll have to get around to watching the Heisei Gamera films as well. Since, apparently, they're amazing.
The Trilogy is AWESOME !!!
We all know that Jr. wouldn’t hurt a fly.
WE NEED MORE GAMERA MOVIES !
I watched this movie and it is a masterpiece of a movie .
Do think the original Godzilla is a better film, but this is still one of the finest examples of the Japanese kaiju genre.
I honestly thought that the gamera would fail but even I watched the movies and I loved them
I Love How Tired Gamera Looks in this Movie, Poor Dude has been Killing Gyaos Nonstop Since Legion and Then Iris Comes Up, but He Looks So Determined too Like he’s Going to Defend the Earth for as Long as it Takes No Matter How Tired and Beat Up He is
Your praise of that initial battle reminds of another reason I don't particularly like Gamera 2: in Gamera 2, the military has time to clear a town for the monsters to fight in. My three biggest takeaways from Gamera 3 are the tracking shot when the general decides to attack Gamera first, Gamera shooting fire through his severed arm, and the ending with the multiple Gyaos.
As amazing as Heisei Gamera is, I still wish they had found some way to include Barugon
This movie was beautiful.
That ending!
I give this one 5 stars out of 5.
this is the greatest kaiju movie ever made
Hated,injured,enemies are enormous.
I couldn't agree more
This wasn't just the end of the Gamera Trilogy, it was also the final Heisei Era Kaiju film; the end of an era that began in 1984. It is the pinnacle of Kaiju Eiga. Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys is what most trilogy closers strive to be, regardless of genre. 5/5
Good video bro. This is a good movie. I still like the 2nd one better though.
This is my second fav giant monster movie behind the first Godzilla!
After you finish with Gamera, what will be your next kaiju films or series? I personally would love to see your thoughts on the original Ultraman series then move to the new Netflix Anime that continues the original series in a weird way to be honest.
3 Gamera Guardian Of The Universe 9/10
2 Gamera Attack Of Legion 10/10
1 Gamera Revenge Of Iris 10/10
hope we get another film in this series as i really loved this reboot and definitely feels they went as all out as they could showing great suitmation, awesome 90's anime ova esque feel(that i definitely got when i got introduced to these films by adv's promo's.) with it's beautiful music & ideas.
and a great story with that shows consequences to gamera's actions with the shibuya attack being the few times i got frightened in a kaiju movie(outside shin godzilla/1954.) with how disturbing it is seeing tons of people die and the city become apocalyptic from the atlantean turtle becoming desperate from his lost connection to humanity making him justifiably viewed as their enemy & spiritual connection(that i really love in these movies and like godzilla's starting to take cues from in gmk & monsterverse/would love this version of gamera to appear.:3) with the embodiment of revenge iris becomes blurring it acting on it's own will/plans,the gyaos or ayana(especially when she's being shown memories by it/floating in it's mind.) .
was great seeing the older characters return(kinda wish we saw osaka with the main characters more in the finale instead of being nearly arrested.) that became my favorite kaiju humans showing they can be as important as the monsters and ending on a hauntingly ambiguous note that the only clue the creator leaves is if you believe gamera can win against that worldwide gyaos swarm.(which after everything the turtles been through honestly do think he can as despite the collateral and stress from desperation he did pretty well against the others across the world throughout the film/glad it got changed as originally it was going to be it's bleakest with everything destroyed or gone with only gamera left.)
I dont know I always thought legion was a better movie. And on the Godzilla side I always loved godzilla vs biolante
Iris is sooooooo adorable
