I use tool box liner for a pad.

Hi Joe, Great topic! To cut down sound I use a 1/2” thick felt typing pad with shelf liner underneath to stop it sliding, but it doesn't work for those typewriters where there's not much clearance beneath for the moving parts. The typing pad Richard Polt sells is pretty good with most machines, and it comes with a non slip layer underneath. Your desk height looks good, but please get or make a better one with a wood surface.

I found that a deskmat dampened the sound of my mechanical keyboard significantly, it might work for your typewriters as well. And they can be ordered with custom prints even :)

I own about 11 typewriter stands of various quality and age (don't ask me why). Most of them are 27 inches tall, a few a bit more. The average desk height is a bit higher at 28 to 29 inches. Since all these stands were made before laptops, 27 inches seems to be the consensus for typewriter stand height. That works for me too at 6 feet tall.

The Cadance of your words is very soothing. Beyond that cool facto, I started typing so this is pretty timely. Thanks!
Ps. I am genuinely curious. Do generally stick to a single genre in your writings or do you ever do expriemental stuff? I vague recollections of you saying its more grounded- lifey kind stuff?
Are there other muses? Shall we say?

Hey? At least you HAD a typing teacher! Some of us NEVER did and are self taught. We developed our own, "two fingered "Hunt 'n Peck" systems! LOL

Great! Great video! Great topic! I have bad typing positions naturally and have had to work on typing posture. My natural position being 6'2" is to lean forward, put my feet back behind me with feet behind front legs of a chair. Causing neck issues, leg cramps etc. I have to force myself to put back flat against chair and feet flat on the floor and to get typewriter at correct height to be able to type for long periods of time without...paying the price of aches, pains, cramps, afterwards. Enjoyed the episode.Well done. He's a topic..as you mentioned, typing outside. Here in Ohio we have ever changing weather. I am concerned when I take a typewriter from air conditioned house to out doors. The change in temp and humidity cause condensation on the typewriter. My concern is then rust can form...EVERYWHERE! So...how do you acclimate typewriters to be used outside without creating operational issues? Is it possible? I guess if temp & humidity in house match outside then there are no issues.

The smaller keyboard of most typewriters is much more comfortable than the desktop PC's extended keyboard with a mouse on the right side (for right-handed folks). I find my typewriters are much better for me ergonomically because of this. Daniel

I've always removed the arms from my desk chair.

What do you think about the typing desks that are lower than standard desk? Why were they designed to be lower?

    • @Joe_VanCleave

I think they were designed for use with "standard" desktop machines, that were rather tall. As per typing instructional books and films I've seen, your forearms should be slanted parallel to the keyboard of the machine (typewriter keyboards being sloped, rather than flat like with laptop computers), with your wrists not bent much at all. It also depends on the height of your chair. I personally find a slightly higher desk works for me better, to achieve the proper forearm slope while keeping my wrists straight.

If you've got a spare auto tire replacement jack around? You could use THAT to shore up your table by padding its "lifting head" with a cloth or rag and pump it up under the edge of your makeshift desk. It's not great but it is a quick and inexpensive solution until your regular work station/desk is ready for duty. Hope my suggestion helps and good luck! CLICKETY CLACKERS 4EVER!

By the way... I heard you mention "COLIBRI" just now for that small machine you relocated. I've only heard that brand name associated with cigarette lighters. Same company? Just curious.

Couldn’t you just lower the chair? Or isn’t it gas lift?

I'd put my machine on a pillow instead! LOL!

I NEVER got the hang of "LAP TYPING". My midrift just NOT conducive to being a proper platform to support the machine! What can I say? I'm "circumfrentially challenged", "diametrically disabled", " pleasantly plump", aka FAT!!!

    Portable typewriters are overrated
    - With love, medium typewriters gang

    • @serge933
      @serge933 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "medium" typewriters are portables
Ultra-portables are those like on the video. Portables were made to be moved around and most also came with split cases to be able to type on a lap or other areas without a desk.
