    I would like to express sincerely my acknowledgment for this video. I got graduated recently as Mechanical Engineer, (no deep knowledge about coding associated) and this video is helping me to manage useful info of the real world, and not dying in the way. It seems that the world is always telling us that is not possible to make our own devices and machines (instead of buying it) (and of course, not with social motivations), so thanks for take the opposite way.

    I know this is an old video but wanted to thank you for one of the best videos on this subject. While I have a boatload of Raspberry Pi's around the house, mostly for KODI, and lighting display stuff, I had never tried Node Red simply because of, shall we say less than stellar information/videos on the web.
    So, yesterday, using your video, I was successful in getting a Pi running Node Red and even sending e-mails which, for anyone who has tried to do send e-mails in a C or VB or other language, knows is not an easy feat. With Node Red, a few click, enter basic account information, deploy, DONE.
    Brilliant best describes you ability to convey a subject in a clearly understood manner.
    Hope to use this to get off of ewelink's [ITEAD Sonoff] server and use the Pi/Node Red/MQTT to run my home automation.
    Thank you very much.

    Wow!
    I've seen dozens of videos on Node-Red, including the annoying guy who speak in exclamation marks!
    None have been this easy to understand or as complete.
    I didn't see your "Next video" you referred to at the end. I looked in your play lists and videos, but couldn't find them.
    I can only imagine how much work it took to make this video. I wanted to thank you for spending that time. It helped me a lot. Please do more videos on this HOT subject.
    IOT is exploding and ESP modules are everywhere.
    You gained another devoted subscriber. Cheers.

    • @richard_wenner
      @richard_wenner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you - this is certainly the way to galvanise me into further action. I agree with you regarding the 'hot topic' issue (that and MQTT). There are however a couple of updates that make the process of installation and update on the Pi far easier (there should be a ref below). These videos do consume a lot of time. Many times I've things planned and the Master (Andreas Spiess - the 'Guy with the Swis Accent') has beaten me to it - with far better stuff.

    • @pirateman1966
      @pirateman1966 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richard_wenner I've seen all your videos now. You shouldn't compare your videos with that of that German Robot. His videos are so boring! great as a sleeping aid.
      If you do a search, you will find that there is no good videos that deal with only node-red and MQTT, which is more than enough to run a small house with a smart phone as the UI.
      It's always complicated with home assistant or OpenHAB or other flavors of the day.
      The one video I found useful, was from BitLuni th-cam.com/video/GeN7g4bdHiM/w-d-xo.html which is well done.
      The guy from "opto video" may have some stuff, but I just can't stand him long enough to find out with the way he talks in a constant state of exclamation mark. It's like a millennium whining in my ear, with an occasional shitty music.
      You have a presentation style unique to you. Don't sell that short. Cheers.

Cost around 3 days of head banging before going back and digging out the latest Jessie and starting again. All now working and talking to an ESP loaded with Sonoff-Tasmota. Problem is that mosquitto is dependent on some libs that have been dropped in Stretch. Some say that getting this lot working and then upgrading to Stretch does work but I have not tried. Mike

It could be an idea to store a copy of this image online(?). The other option would be to start with a minimal installation and use Git just to install only the required components which is quicker. This route took time and installs everything which is good thorough option for 'newbies' I presumed.

    how make this ip adress for exemple 192.168.23:1880/ui access from anywere in the web
    how can i open this page in my mobile phone from another place in the world

    • @richard_wenner
      @richard_wenner  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a word CAREFULLY! Do you have a router connecting you to the Internet? If so you need to access it you may see it on 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 254.... depends upon the model. Once in look for the firewall settings. What you can do there is open a port on the firewall to see your Node Red on your public address. (This too should be shown somewhere in your routers settings). Make sure you password protect your device though or even consider using a secure port.

      Follow this link for details to access your routers controls. setuprouter.com/router/zte/f660/login.htm and here for details of the firewall settings. What you are doing is exposing the internal part of your network from 192.168.0.#:port to the external ip address allocated by your supplier ###.###.###.###:port as for protection ..... well the honeypot demonstrations I give show that you are bound to be 'attacked' within 15 minutes - have a look at the log files in your router to see what has already happened. Do beware please.

    Hi,
    Nice video, thanks ! I have two questions :
    1. How to run node-red in the background ?
    I tried "node-red &". It runs in the background but repeatedly surfaces in the foreground.
    2. How do we start node-red automatically in the background as the pi boots up ?
    So, we do not have to ssh every time and type in "node-red".
    I tried adding "node-red &" in /etc/rc.local. This does not work i.e. it does not even start node-red.
    Please let know.

    I’m grateful to see such an elaboration. Hats off to your knowledge and presentation skill. Undoubtedly I’m newbie into this, and exploring all I can, may be you could point me to the right place, if there’s a guide to get expertise over nodered. I’m still unable to correlate some basic stuff sometimes...my first project I’ve decided is to have complete dashboard for my room lighting controls. I’ve already bought one Nodemcu.v9 and got raspberry pi able to use gpio pins. But not over wireless MQTT.....please advise me. Thanks in advance.

      Mandeep - thanks for you comments. Don't worry about being a 'newbie' - it's more exciting when ehter is so much to learn but frustrating if you don't have friendly support at hand. I've not found a single source on Node Red - but doo search their site for a growing array of information as this area just exploads. Peter Scargill is also a regular and brilliant advocate. Master MQTT there is not a great deal to it. I keep meaning to do a piece on securing MQTT as a single central access point into/out of the home - it's just time! Good luck (If you have not discovered Andreas Spiess you are in for a delight too! :)

      Richard, I really appreciate your reply. I’m now feeling better as I couldn’t find any 300 pages pdf which could’ve given me more peace.
      Please answer my one and only question, using raspbian/nodered 192.168.1.5 how to send mqtt message to the “Nodemcu” 192.168.1.4 listening on mqtt (on same Wi-Fi) another ip in my lan.

    • @richard_wenner
      @richard_wenner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mandeepmails First question is can you ping between these devices? If so set up MQTT on the Pi. The bit I cant help with is setting up MQTT on Nodemcu that you would needd to hunt for but get back if you have not done this by next week (I'm busy writing an article at present so can't go further). With Node Red it helps if know a little JS. here is a link to some good and very cheap on line courses. www.eduonix.com

    • @mandeepmails
      @mandeepmails 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richard_wenner Yes i can ping 192.168.1.4 node-mcu-relay using ping-node/java-bean from node-red 192.168.1.5 (running over raspbian)

    • @richard_wenner
      @richard_wenner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mandeepmails Well surely you are almost there? Run the MQTT server on your Pi and then Point Node Red at it. You can run a terminal to ensure that the ports are open (from anywhere at a baisc level - as the video shows. The final thing (I've not tried it) is to try to run something like Mosquitto on your Node MCU www.instructables.com/id/NodeMCU-MQTT-Basic-Example/

    Great video, thanks for the great introduction to node-red. A question for you: any thoughts on how to utilize analog inputs from the Pi? I've been looking for examples and have yet to find anything very useful. Thanks!

    • @richard_wenner
      @richard_wenner  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you but what exactly do you mean by 'utilize analog inputs from the Pi'? The lack of analog inputs is one of the areas where the Pi is weak. Are you looking for ways to sense analog inputs inputs or applications that require analog inputs. I'm slightly confused.

    • @brettlarson6886
      @brettlarson6886 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Remedial Raspberry Pi! I am used playing with the Arduino and its analog inputs. I hadn't realized I will need some kind of ADC to utilize an analog sensor with the pi/node-red. I was looking to use pi/node-red to read, store, and display temperature and other atmospheric data.
