    Hello Jim, I was pleasantly surprised at how big the Strawberries get when using new plants, well worth the effort to change them and give them space.
    😆 Happy Gardening my friend, Terry.

    Very interesting and informative Jim. Amazing to see how well they did from the earlier pics. They should do just as well if not even better now they're thinned out and have a layer that will mulch over the winter months. Thanks for sharing

    normally older plants that are not diseased will produces very well for 2-3 years before burning out. It is also easier to control the beds if you go through them once per month during the summer once the largest runners on each offshoot has rooted. This will both take the stress off the mother plant which will allow it to produce larger strawberries and you will get some great runners for starting a new bed and remember to pot a few maintaining your original bed. Mowing is a good idea for both everbearing and junebearing strawberry plants as strawberry plants are most prone to disease when their foliage is becoming weak when they are going into dormancy. In the fall you can also walk through and remove any diseased or sickly looking mother plants and replace with some of the runners you collected the following spring.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks Brian. Much appreciated. No, I didn't put those in the compost. I do compost some things from the garden, but most things I don't. Mostly leaves for compost, with some kitchen scraps and such. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    Hi....i have so many runners and new plants....its a mess..and honestly I don't even know what to do..i live in Canada..are winters r pretty brutal?should I mulch them with straw and clean them up in spring...or could i move and clip some runners and replant them now b4 it snows

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being that far north, I think I would wait till spring and do it then.

      Yes..thats what I thought but wasn't sure...thank you...i have a question about plants in pots..over time we need to refresh the soil and add new soil?but..in the old soil there r seeds..what do you suggest we do with the old soil to prevent dumping it in the garden and having more weeds or seeds germinate?do u recommend throwing out the old dirt to prevent more weeds coming up?Thanks alot!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I try not to reuse soil that has a lot of weed seeds in it. I do recycle my soil I use in my containers and grow bags, but I try to keep it as week free as I can during the growing season.

    Hello sir,what are the signs of an older strawberry plant?Plz..

    Also...is it ok to keep planting strawberries in the same spot? Thanks so much

      Older plants look more woody at the crown.

    Hi there...i planted some everbearing strawberries this spring...its the first year for them..there leaves are starting to curl upwards would you happen to know why thank you

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strawberry plants can have fungal problems sometimes. That can cause leaves to curl. It might be more of a problem if you live in an area that had lots of rain this year.

    • @mystiquerose620
      @mystiquerose620 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @MidwestGardener

    Hey Jim, I have never gotten rid of any strawberries before... I am not even sure which one is the original plant. I started with 1 about 5 years ago in a container. I did repot a lot of runners this year so I know they are "new", but not sure about the 12 other ones. So do you pull the olds one each year? I am growing the same variety, quinault and I bought the hula berry "white" strawberry this year and have runners off of them also. So how long do they last? Thanks for any info. T

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, if you can tell which ones they are, I take out the old ones. Mine were so overcrowded this year that after I got started, I just grabbed hands full and pulled them out without even trying to figure out which were the old ones. Since I did this video, more of them are peeking through the leaves, so I'll probably have to pull some more.

      When do strawberry plants stop producing fruit?is it there 3 or 4 yr Mark?I heard they usually live up to 4 hrs?this was 1st year of strawberries but they didn't produce alot of fruit..do you think 2nd yr will be better?thanks

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, your second year should be much better. The new plants that got established this year should probably do well next year. They can probably produce for 4 or 5 years, but I don't really like to let mine get much older than 3 years. That's just my personal preference though. Good luck with them next year!
