Doc, you keep giving great tips. I've struggled with removing the battery with my 09 RK and my current ride 2012 FLHTK. I ain't never forgetting this tip...Whish that i could give you a hundred thumbs up...
Thanks Doc!!! The strap on my 2010 Limited lasted only 3 years so I took an old luggage strap and made my own... the tip with the pick will come in handy!!!! BTW... I hope YOU, the family and all the great folks at LCHD have a Very Merry Christmas this year!!! Be Blessed my friend!!!!
Thank you for the detailed video, great work. I wish HD would add pos/neg jumper connections to their batteries. The jumper can be tucked behind the left panel for easy access in case a jump start is needed. I have a 2020 Heritage Softail and battery access isn't easy.
Big G'day Doc from Down Under 🇦🇺 THANKS again for another great Harley Tip & all your other videos this year. Hope you & the family have a awesome Xmas period ♥️🎁🎄🎉🙏 May all your days be Harley days 🖤🧡🖤 Safe travels 🙏♥️🐾🐾🇦🇺
Thanks Doc, I didn’t realize that HD changed this so much. I may have to replace the battery when my CVO Street Glide gets all the painted surfaces replaced in the shop…
Speaking of lifting the battery. I use a piece of milk carton about 3/4" wide and about a foot long. Put a small hole in each end and use the terminal screws to screw it to the battery and it makes a nice lifting handle. I wrapped it in duct tape and printed Save on it. It's my go to tool for working on battery.
I may or may not have just snipped that little plastic window after i had it off the first time. Not like its going anywhere with the t40s and the seat on top of it.
Doc Harley, thanks for the video. I'm planning on changing out my battery soon and your video makes it seem simple enough even for me to do. One question though. I have the audible alarm system on my '21 FLTRK. How do I disconnect the battery WITHOUT setting off the alarm? Thanks again!
Will a battery replacement will erase my ECM map ? I had a Dyno fitting las year and I don't want to lose it ? Thank you very much Doc !!! Y'r videos and explanations are cristal clear !!!!!
I had a problem at one time , bolts would come loose and not charge battery, then it would not start. To fix I used 1/4" outside Star Washer on the bolts - it Stopped the Bolts from loosening Up , no more charging problem or No Starts with out taking off Seat and fighting up bolts.
It's a recommended best practice, Doc even says so at 2:59. You do it for 2 main reasons, 1, for safety because the bike could accidentally start up and 2 because you could cause an electrical short which could damage the ECM unit or some other expensive part.
It has to do with Current Flow and the sensitivity of electronics. Taking the ground off first is the safer way to stop current flow. Speaking of safety. Taking off the positive first takes the chance of the wrench touching the ground side. This creates a direct current from one side of battery to the other. This will heat up the wrench and you to burning levels. Retuning to electronics. To have the ground side connected and the the positive side send a violent current that can destroy an electrical part. These are just a few reasons….Doc
I’m sorry Mike. Not sure what you are asking. Low Country Harley-Davidson has been doing this for 8 years. We do not have them all written down. Keep searching…..Doc
Hello Doc. can you tell me what is causing my xl1200ns iron 2019 Wen i give gas it jerks and again when releasing the throttle and the clutch is doing the same thing and it's hard to maintain 30 km/h it's jerking and i keep shifting all the time never believe that a HD 1200 Iron could be having so much problem, it has only 5000km what can do it's my firs Harley and dont know much about them
With your first experience and knowledge at this time. I suggest bringing it to a trusted shop. It could be as easy as loose battery connections. But you don’t know where the battery is. There is plenty of people here who will tell you what to check, but again you have no idea what they are describing. It will take time for you to learn. It will be possible down the road…..Doc
thank you for your fast response i know everything about it, like where the batterie and the other mechanical part my concerne is only that jerking between the gear change and clutch release and a loud noise when rolling over big bump sound like metal to metal and i cant find it. @@LowCountryHarleyDavidson
that strap was completely eroded by the time i needed a new battery on my 08 UG, by the way that OEM battery lasted 12 years before it struggled to start my 10.5:1 motor, been through two after market batteries since, so everyone who says stock sucks can blow me
Had this problem on my 2012 Ultra the first time I had to get to the battery. Hasn't been an issue since then because I cut the dang plastic tab off the cover! That might make you and some others cringe, but it's been a non issue since then.
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson sorry to put it that way Doc, but motorcycles shouldn't be complicated to do certain tasks. I'm not into all the electronics of today's vehicle's. That's why appreciate my 33yr old EVO, it's something I still can maintain on my own n is reliable to this moment. I like the newer models, not the complexities about them, its just a motorcycle. 100% this. Love his videos!
This is just another thing that makes me appreciate my 2002 Road King. Thanks for that.
That 90 degree pick is a excellent idea. That thing is hard to get to

I just recently learned this trick. I wish I would have seen your excellent tip first! It would have saved me 30+ minutes of head scratching!
Another great tip, thanks Doc.
Great job Doc Harley, you helped an old retired mechanic out. You have the best videos 👍🏻✌🏻
Thanks for watching 👍…Doc
Very useful information Doc. Thank you for sharing. Well done.
Nice tip Doc. I could have used it two weeks ago. Took me a while to figure out how to get that over the tab.
EXACTLY the info I was looking for. I was trying my best not lose my cool and break a clip. THANK YOU DOC !!!

My 1967 XLCH had no battery! I sure miss that bike.

Hi Doc. This video was three months late😂. That little plastic cover really tested my patience. I prevailed, thought. Thank you. Merry Christmas.

No a battery gone dead will not erase a ECM. I do suggest you ask your tuner for a copy of your tune on a supplied thumb drive…..Doc

The strap is striped under the battery. 😔 I used the battery bolts to remove it. 🏍💨🏍💨
Epic video! Thank you!!!
Glad you liked it…..Doc
The strap was under my battery so I had to get long M6 bolts and washers to get the battery out
Is it necessary to remove the maxi fuse before you remove the battery? I've never taken it out in the past.

I’m going to need a video on removing the fuse. I wasn’t given any manuals for my 2020 FLHXS 😂😂

Thank you Sir!!!
Hey Doc, There's no video out there for the 2024's yet. How different is the battery removal on the 2024 baggers? Thanks
Same as before just the BCM is on top instead of the ECM🤷♂️…..Doc
That was a great video!! Thanks!!
Glad you liked it…..Doc
Why take out first negative and after positive? What will happen? Also when you get it back you put first positive or negative and why? Thanks.

My 09 sportster negative terminal is a pain to get the bolt started lol
Agree, so the Factory suggest removing the ground at the motor( like that’s any easier 🤦♂️…..Doc
Where is the original battery video ?

Thank you, I haven’t had to go there on my 2022 road glide limited yet…….😅 I’m a cheapskate so I do as much of my own mechanics as I can.

A non issue with maintaining agree but now the battery can rock in the bike. Please check your connections periodically between services….Doc
Why do they make things so hard now. Is it so you have to take it to a shop?
I don’t think so. It changed when they decided to cut cost and use plastic🤷♂️….Doc
