That was brilliant! I hadn't listened to a Te Kanawa performance in ages. I first heard of her in 1981 when it was announced that she would perform at the Royal Wedding. (Mein Gott that was a long time ago!)
It takes a special gift to perform lieder effectively IMO. This performance shows Te Kanawa's excellence as a lieder singer. Also, a special shout-out to Mr. Amner, the superb pianist.

If anyone is interested to explore this song both emotionally and musically, check out Ben Zander’s master class where he teaches a young singing student. Very powerful. On TH-cam.

Intellectuell deph is not necessary but just a perfect voice and interpretation.. She has it all.

    Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel
    Meine Ruh ist hin,
    Mein Herz ist schwer,
    Ich finde sie nimmer
    Und nimmermehr.
    Wo ich ihn nicht hab,
    Ist mir das Grab,
    Die ganze Welt
    Ist mir vergällt.
    Mein armer Kopf
    Ist mir verrückt,
    Mein aremer Sinn
    Ist mir zerstückt.
    Nach ihm nur schau ich
    Zum Fenster hinaus,
    Nach ihm nur geh ich
    Aus dem Haus.
    Sein hoher Gang,
    Sein' edle Gestalt,
    Seines Mundes Lächeln,
    Seiner Augen Gewalt,
    Und seiner Rede
    Zauberfluss,
    Sein Händedruck,
    Und ach, sein Kuss.
    Mein Busen drängt
    Sich nach ihm hin.
    Auch dürf ich fassen
    Und halten ihn,
    Und küssen ihn,
    So wie ich wollt,
    An seinen Küssen
    Vergehen sollt!
    ----------------------------------------------------
    My peace is gone,
    My heart is heavy,
    I will find it never
    and never more.
Where I do not have him,
    That is the grave,
    The whole world
    Is bitter to me.
    My poor head
    Is crazy to me,
    My poor mind
    Is torn apart.
    For him only, I look
    Out the window
Only for him do I go
    Out of the house.
    His tall walk,
    His noble figure,
    His mouth's smile,
    His eyes' power,
    And his mouth's
    Magic flow,
    His handclasp,
    and ah! his kiss!
    My peace is gone,
    My heart is heavy,
    I will find it never
    and never more.
    My bosom urges itself
    toward him.
    Ah, might I grasp
    And hold him!
    And kiss him,
    As I would wish,
    At his kisses
    I should die!

Love how effortless you make it look Kiri. The idea that a large breath before each phrase is not your friend is quite evident here by your masterful technique. Thank you for sharing this! -TheOperaSingingChef

I agree with Altonahh10. Apart from being rather slow and sometimes flat in intonation, this performance lacks any depth. The pianist's playing is dull, the singer shows only a very general understanding of her text. Of course, she had this wonderful and seemingly effortless voice, but listen to Elly Ameling's live rendition from Vienna to understand what a real lied singer, though much later in her career and with a bit more vocal effort, can do (and how suggestive the piano part can sound).

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is one of the greatest sopranos of the last half century. She has sung in all the great opera houses, with all the great companies, maestros and tenors. If you don’t like her singing, fine, but don’t portray her as some amateur.

Whenever I hear her sing in German, I miss the intellectual depth and interpretation. That becomes crucial in Liedgesang, especially when it comes to Schubert. I´m not saying this is a bad rendition, but it is too operatic and not enough Lied.

    • @renatekl
      @renatekl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

As I said - intellectuell depth is not nessesary for this Schubert Lied. Eine gute Stimme und eine gute Begleitung . Ein Verständnis, von was da man singt!. Scheint mir gelungen.

... und sehr viel von Goethe, der das gedacht hat in Faust 1.

    • @baritonebynight

Too operatic? The singers job in the same in opera and lieder. When one sings either opera or Lieder, one interprets the text and the character in which they are singing.

@@baritonebynight Non: l'opéra a PAR NATURE un aspect théâtral; pas le Lied,et surtout pas le Lied chez Schubert (qui, soit dit en passant, n'aimait pas du tout "qu'on en rajoute".

Goodness, I don't really like to criticise here, but I really can't understand this type of piano playing... So unnuanced, and for Schubert! Goodness me...
