No, its mild steel with the "grey-blackish" mill scale still on it. Which indirectly protects the raw metal beneath. We just keep it clean/coated with a stainless steel cleaner. It leaves it with a polished look.

I imagine you could add a clear coat to it or like we did leave it alone with the exceptions of the cut edges, I sprayed those with a clear coat. The mill scale on hot rolled steel adds enough protection from oxidation in a house that’s climate controlled.
