- not really for the sega genesis. just for fun.
9-bit colour, divvied up into 4 palettes of 15+alpha colours each, just like momma used to make. built in slices in photoshop, and scrolled past each other at different speeds. the song was made with an emulator for the Yamaha YM2612, the chip used to create the sound in the sega genesis.
chiptune, graphics, animation and whatever made by me.
the original song is "A Real Hero" by College and Electric Youth, and the movie Drive is copyright whoever made the original movie
here is my deviantart account: sleepcircle.deviantart.com
and here is where yall can download the song proper. thanks to college for giving me permission. / a-real-hero-16-bit-edi...
i got my names mixed up initially (mega drive vs. master system) so let's just say the master system version was a late backwards conversion which sold okay but sadly did not have the racing sequence.
Imagine there was a game based on Drive serving as a prequel and leading to the events of the film. You play as Driver but instead of being a GTA clone the game's focus is on driving. He doesn't carry a gun, he drives. You have 5 minutes, in those five minutes he's yours.
Already exist, It s called out run.
A game where you play as driver trying to escape the cops and do his job whilst getting invovled with a married woman whose husband you help get money for once he gets out of prison only for him to be killed during a heist and having to constantly out run murderous gang members whilst hanging onto the mob bosses money and seeking revenge on him for threatening to hurt the woman you love. Hell yeah I'd buy it.
Hotine Miami
haha true. But I wish there really was a drive game and the mechanics to be like the first and second GTA. That would be amazing
the plot of the movie Drive (2011)
I wish there was a movie with this plot.
This was my 20's except I never helped anybody's husband. Rather the opposite, actually.
THIS NEEDS TO BE REAL
Human bean
i would totally buy this game.
Play Hotline Miami lol.
Is you want similar music, play Slipstream
This is absolutely beautiful.
Real human bean
and a real an hero
every time I see coments like this I imagine killer bean with driver's outfit lmao
Compliments on the song, man. You've beautifully captured the feeling of a great end credits sequence on a Genesis game. I would happily play this game.
One of the best videos on TH-cam, I listen to this alot, especially when I'm in a "Drive" mood.
Как же я хотел что бы нажали START! =(
Awesome
жиза(((((
Нифига как много русскоязычных
Never heard of this! Both film and Sega were brilliant
Holy shit, the chiptune music is amazing.
PRESS START!!! PRESSSSS! I WANT PLAY THIS!!!
okay it's up. links in the desc.
DUDE THIS IS AMAZING!
Damn you could have just made the song. May even just a pretty 16bit thumbnail. But nah, you went the whole mile on this! Great job and thanks for sharing!
CAN'T STOP REPLAYING.
Simply awesome man! :) Really good job! It has a very Streets of Rage feel, really cool stuff! :)
9 years later, still gave me goosebumps man! So kewl
Parallax scrolling on a Master System???
I think boyfinn made a Drive themed demo that runs on the megadrive.
Sagaia on the Master System has done it, so clearly it's possible.
I live for this
IRENE: That was really great. Benicio had fun...
(20 seconds later)
DRIVER: I had fun too...
I wish this was a real game! It reminds me of streets of rage 2....
GOOSEBUMPS! This is just beautiful
Press that f...ing start button!
I really want to do this kind of art, it's pretty awesome and the song is too dope!!!!
You sir, have made my month, I have this on repeat when I am focused in photoshop for work. I only wish my mouse had a start button.
I LOVE this! Thankyou for making this, this makes my life better. It reminds me a bit of Sim City SNES's intro? Was that an influence or maybe another game? Or just the era?
i just made a bunch of slices in photoshop, sampling my colours from a 9-bit colour palette and creating 4 palettes in accordance with the sega genesis spec. imported them into aftereffects (although most basic video effects packages should let you do it) and scrolled them from the right to the left ad infinitum.
it was simple, but very manual, labor-intensive stuff.
I want to play this game!!!
it was inspired by Sonic 2's Chemical Plant Zone and by just about any stage from Shinobi 3 you'd care to mention!
This might actually be better than the movie version. I fucking adore this song, impressive, sir.
A real human bean
i don't know what it is but some of the prettiest games I've played have 8 bit style graphics like this, its a really nice art style and the cover ain't so bad either.
What an awesome cover. Brilliant.
I just want to say this is awesome you captured the song wonderfully and the color choices and music is amazing please make more of these with other soundtracks
This is just beyond cool.
Thanks for the great vido /song... really brings back memories!!!
This is actually freaking AWESOME! Great work!
In before the inevitable "Real Heroes Press Start" comment. Great rendition of the song :)
How awesome is this? I stumbled across this....
I'll be interested if you listen to the Sim City "Classic" (SNES) OST then try to make a song that basically combine all of the OST into a single song. Not a mashup or a remix, just a new song that for you screams "this was Sim City for me". I feel you could make something that can strike the same vibe and mood.
Awesome work! Just like a real Genesis game =)
(lol @ "copyright whoever made the original movie") XD
10 of fucking 10
Gundersonmunderson, you're a real human being.
hahaha this is awesome! good job bro
if you put the mouse over the video's track bar, the preview image does something pretty trippy as you move across the track bar.
Also cool song/idea overall!
Man, you're a real hero
Really exciting - Please show this to an indie game company!
This is so cool.
DRIVE IS MY FAVORITE BEAN XD XD SO EDGE
NOT MUCH TALK
JUST EDGE
BRYAN GOOSEMAN IS BEST ACT IN ALL OF YEARS
Swampy Wilkinson why are you so mad breh
hah, that would be interesting…! How would you think such a thing would be done, conceptually?
I picture the gameplay as a combination of OutRun and Final Fight. Driving levels like: PCH, LA River, and Pawn Shop getaway; and fighting levels like: the beach, the chop shop, the nightclub, and, what every beat-em-up game needs, an elevator sequence. Also, Nino is a giant with a tidal wave attack and Bernie is in a robot suit with a giant sword.
Lastly, if you beat the whole game without dying in less than 100 minutes you get the “happily ever after” ending.
Oh please? would it be so hard? I would LOVE it fixed. this is still so great!!
this is seriously the greatest thing ive head in ages
Its pretty cool, i like this :D
Great stuff - Reminds me of Streets of Rage!
Really similar vibes to the " 4h30 CityRiders Teaser " video French artist Danger did a couple of years ago too.
very niiice. what software did you used to make the art and animation ?
Brilliant!
parallax scrolling is a freaking workhorse
Would be great if the notes that come in at :23 were on time. They're just kinda there doing their own thing, really annoying.
sorry, i didn't realize they were off-time and i have since lost the original file.
Posted on College's Facebook by Grellier hylmsylf. Amazing work. Echo it a million times.. this game needs to be made!
You did a very good job! I like it alot!
love your work
Goodness, this is great!
thank you. it's CRAZY old but i'm glad people still like it.
GREAT WORK
you can download an mp3 from the info now
Dont worry, they're perfect. It sounds just like the real thing.
it was on soundcloud for download but apparently i reached the max limit for now. sorry :/
And the parallax scrolling still does the job
Love it and loved the movie
Will you just press start already?!!
Cool vid man
top tier adaptation man. glad i found it accidentally!!
Incredible!! Luv this!! :) DJP
Making sure things looped was always the hardest part for me when working in flash.
What did you use to make the pixel art?
yeah gimme a day or two ill get it up on soundcloud or somewhere
I think Sega made the Drive intro screen similar to the Sim City intro screen for SNES!! Anyone else get the same feeling?!!
it sounded okay to me-it could just be a difference in our volume and frequency tolerances. also hardware is a variable factor. still i'm sorry it was unpleasant for you to listen to, if i had some way of guaranteeing an even listening experience across all systems and physiologies i would execute it.
Soooo coooool
excellent. mission accomplished
it was a joke buddy but thanks for responding anyway !
Man, that shit is amazing!! Its a jam
can you download the song? I looked into the link and couldn't find anything to download it :(
IMPRESSIVE!!
Awesome Work!
Yeah, sounds fine to me, nice work! Try Hotline Miami if you haven't already.
yeah most sega genesis didnt have stereo but the first model genesis you could get it through a headphone jack. the mega-drive 2 and mega CDX had natural stereo though.
Nice work babe!
i mean i saw it on youtube while searching for another thing and i liked it
best song ever!!!
Great Job!
to fully enjoy the 8bit experience, set the video quality to 240p.
you're welcome
awesome ! i would totally play that game
Brilliant video, muchos kudos
This is awesome ,it's just missing some downscale on borders to gives a real optical illusion
Love it.
i was half expecting a car to drive from out of the left part of screen xD
Hey, could i use the mp3 for future videos? i'd give full credit in the description or whatever?
Love it
yeah i could try and figure out what i screwed up. ill see what happens and if i get it fixed ill upload the fixed version to soundcloud. you can't reupload videos though
