Creative Mind - why is it seen that having Disney's approval to screen an African tale is the highest honour to ones story. Look what Disney did to Mulan, Moana, Pocahontas. They were changed to suit Western audiences palette. Do you want that for an African tale/stories. Let your tales stay African by producing them in Africa for African audience and those who appreciate them as they are.

manager-nim I’m not sure what you’re talking about. As a young girl, teenager, and then young woman, I never felt I had to choose and was never taught this. Neither were many of my friends and family. And I certainly never taught that to my daughter.

She had a career and took care of us. Same with my grandma and on and on. And I have taught my daughter everything from how to cook to mowing the grass to checking and changing the fuse box and air filter, changing a tire and sorting and doing laundry. I’ve never put a limit on what she can do and I don’t see that with friends and family who have girls. It hurts my heart to think that someone would raise a child with limits.

It'd be an interesting reversal to see a woman fight for her freedom to marry (nothing bad about heroines who fight for their right not to marry, but I think we're at the point where the subversion has become the cliche). Nothing against that movie, it's great, but when I first heard we were getting an African Disney princess, I was hoping for a figure from folklore.
Hakajin most African stories are not written (tribal stories are oral so it’s hard to find a good solid story). Though I rather have an real African princess than the racist abortion that was princess and the frog. You have to understand though, even if Disney made a real African princess, the American blacks would slam it so hard for being made by whites since most animators are whites. Also, you do know lion king is African (because lions are only found in African) so nala is an African princess.
There would be accusations of cultural appropriation. That's why the only black princess in the Disney movies is an Afro-American cliché (not saying that it's better).
Honestly, I think Tyler Perry Studios needs to collaborate with black animators and compete with Disney to release these types untold stories, and he shouldn't limit them to African folk tales, but pick up other untold ethnic folk tales and make them kid friendly while keeping them true to their history. Then make the adult versions.
The root of the story goes against the feminist narrative. But they can make a story inspired from it by changing around a few things by integrating characters from African mythology like the Kishi who is a demonic two-faced attractive man whose second face is a hyena who the father doesn't allow her to marry until he finds a power to even trick the king. The Mami Wata (African "mermaids) warn her as well when she fetches water from a secret lagoon when she roams too far away when her dad isn't paying attention. They even sing a song about a humble elephant herder in her future. But she thinks they are only doing it to gain favor from her father the king. Which is a complete insult because they are known to be fiercely independent. They can also use the Aziza - the fairy creatures of Africa who protect the environment - to try to warn the strong willed princess about letting the wheat rot which comes back to hurt her because it attracts the Tokoloshe (African zombie gremlins) who feed on the spoiled wheat and kidnap her. Luckily, the fairies help her escape and that is when she meets her future husband after he fights both the gremlins and the Kishi, who finds her and makes a deal with the gremlins for her promising some of the riches of the land with his new found control of the king.
Listen to the narration again. And as far as I know (I stand to be corrected) she is from the Dagomba tribe which is indigenous to present day Ghana. She eloped north away from the land of Dagomba and met her husband somewhere up north, they had a son and their lineage created Burkina Faso. PS: our mordern day borders were created by the European powers of the day. Same way there are Akans in both Ghana and Ivory Coast and Ewe in both Ghana and Togo. There is no argument here 🤦🏾♂️
Yes , our children need positive images, representation, narratives on their history to instil pride and self-esteem in a world that batters us with negative images of ourselves - which is designed to demoralise us. We must arm our youth with knowledge and truth of their ancestors that no one can take away!
It's somehow ironic how Yennenga wanted to marry but her father wouldn't allow it, whereas in most stories it's the other way around, fathers forcing their dauthers to marry somebody they did not love.

Completely agree. This story is beautiful, full of black history, would offer something completely new to the table and would make a ton of money. But no, lets take and old story that was told a tousand times and that already has movies and lets give it to a black person because they don't have original stories. That's how Disney thinks and it's disgusting.. but most of the people don't see that, Little Mermaid will now do more harm than good to black comunitiy and would divide people even more

Yenenga is herstory/history from my youth and upbringing in Burkina Faso (I am part Burkinabe of the Ouedraogo lineage). I’ve wanted to go to Burkina Faso since college. My college has a water treatment program to aid with water purification in small villages. That gave me a big smile to hear this was their legend. Beautiful.

You know what I think animation is the way to go as far as telling our stories. It's easier to depict the vastness and the beauty of ancient Africa that way. It's also more cost-effective. Animation doesn't necessarily only have to be for children. Maybe that's the way to go vs trying to get the motion picture. Loved what you've done love the story ❤️

This is the story of the origin of my last name OUEDRAOGO, which means stallion in mooré the language of the Mossi people. Africa and not only Burkina Faso has so many stories to be shared with the rest of the world. You did a great job, thanks a lot!!!
I was just telling a friend, I don’t understand why they can’t do a Disney African princess story. Princess and the Frog felt like they were trying to appease people, and then they are remaking the little mermaid with a black actress. What I don’t get is, why they can’t give an ancestral African Disney Princess like they did with Moana. Same applies to a South American princess. This was a wonderful tale.

And the real Cinderella story Disney stole from Egypt, her name was NOT Cinderella but her name was Queen Mebkara Nete Kerty 2160 B.C.E. who was the daughter of King Pepe the II. Queen Menkara Nety Kerty independently ruled Egypt and there were many legends about her. One legend was that she was bathing in the river and her clothes were on the banks when a bird came and took her shoe and traveled across the land and dropped her shoe in a Kings lap. He searched all over to find the owner of the shoe until he found Queen Menkara Nete Kerty and they married.

I really did love this story. The artwork is beautiful. It's a beautiful representation of a strong woman and of feminism. Feminism means that women should be allowed to do what they want without being controlled. Wanting a family, wanting love does not make you less of a feminist. You don't need those things to be fulfilled though either and I think this is a beautiful representation of a woman taking her power and her life in her hands and doing what she wants with both. Also I had never heard of this story before. Definitely checking out your other stories now :)

Because other than oral tradition, ancient Africans never wrote or kept records, so there’s not too many stories or myths that exist today.

Yenenga is herstory/history from my youth and upbringing in Burkina Faso (I am part Burkinabe of the Ouedraogo lineage). I hope you continue with glorious storytelling (the work of griot), and (important) changes to pronunciations. You are truly gifted and forward leaning!

I’ve wanted to go to Burkina Faso since college. My college has a water treatment program to aid with water purification in small villages. That gave me a big smile to hear this was their legend. Beautiful.

You know what I think animation is the way to go as far as telling our stories. It's easier to depict the vastness and the beauty of ancient Africa that way. It's also more cost-effective. Animation doesn't necessarily only have to be for children. Maybe that's the way to go vs trying to get the motion picture. Loved what you've done love the story ❤️

I was just telling a friend, I don’t understand why they can’t do a Disney African princess story. Princess and the Frog felt like they were trying to appease people, and then they are remaking the little mermaid with a black actress. What I don’t get is, why they can’t give an ancestral African Disney Princess like they did with Moana. Same applies to a South American princess.

Please make a cartoon story about King Menelek and Empress Taytu Betul and how she defeated the Italians at the Battle of Adwa Ethiopia 1896 gaining thier independence from the Italians. And the real Cinderella story Disney stole from Egypt, her name was NOT Cinderella but her name was Queen Mebkara Nete Kerty 2160 B.C.E. who was the daughter of King Pepe the II. Queen Menkara Nety Kerty independently ruled Egypt and there were many legends about her. One legend was that she was bathing in the river and her clothes were on the banks when a bird came and took her shoe and traveled across the land and dropped her shoe in a Kings lap. He searched all over to find the owner of the shoe until he found Queen Menkara Nete Kerty and they married.

I really did love this story. The artwork is beautiful. It's a beautiful representation of a strong woman and of feminism. Feminism means that women should be allowed to do what they want without being controlled. Wanting a family, wanting love does not make you less of a feminist. You don't need those things to be fulfilled though either and I think this is a beautiful representation of a woman taking her power and her life in her hands and doing what she wants with both. Also I had never heard of this story before. Definitely checking out your other stories now :)
