For the longest time I thought Merak Sakteng was one place but exploring the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary brought me closer to learning about the history of a special group of people and how the two communities of Merak and Sakteng came to be.
From the stories on conservation practices in this region by Forest Rangers, the unique Brokpa people of Merak & Sakteng, intoxicating Tshogchhang rituals to the unforgettable trek to the abode of Aum Jomo, I hope you'll enjoy this special travel documentary.

Wonderful video! I love how you show it through a woman's lens and show the community of women having fun. The rangers work tirelessly but more cooperation is needed by the villagers and pony boys in remote areas. I was in Bhutan in Oct/Nov 2023 and was dismayed to see the amount of garbage littering the trails to the Tigers Nest and throughout the Jomolhari Trek. Empty water bottles, TruK beer cans, Coke cans, Lay potato chip bags, empty tea bags just to name a few. We picked up as much litter as possible but were overwhelmed by the amount. Only by having people return the bottles and cans for $ will this situation change as it is a good incentive to not throw them away. It has worked well in other countries so it can as well for Bhutan! Good luck!!!

There are Brokpas here in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, IN, as well. Precisely on the eastern side of Sakteng. I guess they share the same ethnicity!

There is a place called “Senge” in West Kameng.
In the 17th century, the good people of Senge waged war with the kingdom of Bhutan, but were defeated
As a result, they had to cede most of their land i.e mera sakteng to Bhutan

Merak and sakten existed from 13th century. It was located in present day eastern Bhutan so then eastern Bhutan and central Bhutan was known as monyul before unification of sharchog khorlo tsipgya. 17th century.the bulk of brokpa people have their origin in tsona, Tiber 😊😊
