It's the confidence toward the end that slays me every time. Most sopranos can't even hold those tops notes this long, yet it's just another day at the office for Leontyne. Unreal.
At 1:28 is where this great lady raises the bar so high that they had to throw the bar away. When we heard/saw her live, on stage in 1975. Her presence was saying. This is OPERA like you'll never experience again. Madame Price is still alive & is well into her 90s. She will live forever ♥️ in my heart. Thank you, my friend, for posting greatness. I have replaced most of my Madame Price vinyls with CDs 💿 because this is the greatest voice to come from America my friend. As you well know 😉. Greetings from France 🇫🇷 Arnaud Bourbon Amaral
I am the exact same way when it comes to La Price! I hope that you had the pleasure of seeing her live at the Met in NYC...unbelievable sound resonated through the entire auditorium and lingered such that at moments she was harmonizing with herself.
The scooping down on "Deh pietosa" is the only blemish in this otherwise wonderful performance. The following piece “Zweite Brautnacht” from Die ägyptische Helena is also wonderful.
@@BellaFirenze Jajaja pobre Fleming aunque tienen razón. En abril pasado asistí a su DEBUT en Unter der Linden con un recital bien elegido pero en las propinas como en Glück, das mir verblieb e il sogno di Doretta a lot of scooping.
@@onegin653 Acabo de leer esto: “It’s interesting to note that Fleming herself has acknowledged that she scoops on occasion in performances and makes no apology for it,” says Mark Joelson Daboll, singer, voice teacher, and founder of the online singing tool Please Judge Me. Fleming in particular has risen to an echelon of star-status that critique over her use of scooping could tarnish her reputation as a technically-sound singer. Daboll, a fan of Fleming himself, suspects that “if Fleming were only 5-10 years into her career, her propensity to scoop would have hurt her professionally.”
Here, all of the bad habits of her later career (swooping and scooping, etc) are on full display, but you just can't help but to love and adore her! And that top register never let her down.
They are only bad habits if you don't mean to do them, I think these were intentional like much of her other tendencies. You may not like them and that's perfectly fine but I simply adore all stages of Miss Price, I just wish our opera community wasn't so critical of everyone. There's room for multiple styles and different ways of performing
Well said, Jaykeys! Everyone's an expert nowadays, as if any criticism is going to make any difference to the top position Price holds in the annals of the operatic history of the 20th century.
@@CarldeFigueiredo-lf2gc nobody is disputing her greatness or her place, but the bad habits of her later career are also on full display for everyone to hear. But somehow, they make her even more lovable.

There will not be another Leontyne!
Just to let everybody know that I'm ok, I passed out after her last two high notes! She is Glorious! ❤❤❤❤❤

Many sopranos attempt Leonora… Leontyne conquered her, even past her prime she sails through Verdi’s line with ease, Brava!!!
That final note, the Ab, floated like a pulsating golden light from a mysterious universe.
I remember falling all over myself to record this performance 🥴. This was when any siting of Leontyne Price on the TV Guide was an awaited event!

Brava. For me the best Leonora from Il trovatore......
Only our Montse came close, my friend. But we can't compare GREATNESS. I love them both.
Ethereal!

Aquí decimos sacar con pala y en catalán "fer culleretes"
@@onegin653 Eso es comiquísimo. He ido al Can Culleretes en Barcelona. A Fleming a veces le llaman "La scoopenda."
