I loved this vid - I am a shadetree mechanic in training and this video helped me to replace my thermostat in my parents JEEP - I ddi it myself and saved at least $170.00 as this is what labor would have cost me - since the auto repair shops in chapel hill nc stated it would cost since it takes 2hrs to replace the thermostat. Keep in mind it did not take me 2hrs - but then again I did not take a 1:00 hour break while the clock was running.
thanks man i didn't realize it was that easy. my water pump went out on my 1999 jeep Cherokee sport and you just saved me about 400 dollars from not taking it to a shop!!
It was this video that saved me!! I thought it was my serpentine belt that broke!! Wrong!! It was the water pump bearings. So went got the part and referred to this/ your video. Loved it!! Had to remove alternator but got it out and done. Thank you!! I'm proud I can do this.
Thanks for the video. My 2004 Grand Cherokee overheated today at 104,000 miles and I'll be doing this exact job tomorrow when I get the parts. Very helpful!
Hot DAYUM! With your help, I was able to perform the repair FLAWLESSLY! I can't thank you enough! The money I saved, treated the wife and I to a lovely dinner and a movie! :)
Where do I send this guy a check?!?! Great work! Mine went out yesterday. I'm calling a mechanic friend over to help me replace it but this vid makes me feel so much better about the process.
TYVM!! I had a leak coming from my thermostat housing. After watching this video I was able to tackle the job in only a few minutes. Awesome video. Keep up the great work
Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but I replaced mine today and was able to drop the water pump out the bottom without removing/loosening anything (other than the idler pulley. I did need an extra set of hands on top to get the new one back up without beating up the sealing surfaces though. Thanks for this video though, it was really helpful. This was a very easy job.
Just started mine, got it all done except when I pulled out the thermostat I got splashed lol, and Crappy Tire gave me the wrong one!! grrrr, long walk down there for the correct part. Thanks again for the walkthrough.
If the housing is rusted bad, replace the housing. Check the hose & clamp. Wouldn't hurt to replace the t-stat since you have to replace the gasket anyway. Is that what you wanted to know?
@hundoracer I think I know what you're talking about. The worst bolt on the fan shroud is the lower one on the driver's side. You should be able to get to the bolt from under the Jeep with a swivel socket & long extension. Even after the bolts are out, The shroud can be difficult to lift out of the vehicle. It will want to bind up on the rad hoses & AC lines, or maybe trans cooler lines. You'll have to lift each side a little at a time & work it past the lines & hoses. I hope this helps.
Thanks for the video. Was able to easily replace mine. I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD edition, only difference I didn't have to remove the plastic brace, but I had to remove the alternator to have room to pull out and replace the water pump.
Thank You great vid. I noticed mine had a slight whistle at around 1800 rpm when cold only. I could feel a little play 1\16 or so, but it is dripping slightly so it needs replaced. Thanks again looks like a real easy job. I see your a proud gun owner too, makes the vid even better
just changed the water pump on 2004 jeep, liberty, to remove the fan shroud, unbolt the fan off the waterpump, lift the shroud strait up, with the clutch fan, i also took out the 4 bolts that were screwed into the metal trak, just above the radiator, to get enough room to pull everything out, went great...thanks for video, but no one has the shroud removal in thier vids, wish i would have taped it....
@hundoracer If you have a belt-driven fan, it's going to be in the way. If not, try to see if the new pump will fit between the shroud & engine without removal before you start.
Thanks for the video. I just changed the pump and t-stat on my '04 grand cherokee today and it was a big help. I found it much easier to remove the alternator first to make some room to maneuver. It comes out super easy (2-3 bolts and a wiring plug). I also removed the mounting bolt that the plastic A/C line clip snaps onto. With these two out of the way there was plenty of room to get the pump in/out without touching the power steering line.
I have an '04 Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7. No shroud removal, no fan blade/ clutch removal OR tires. ;) I did have to remove the 3 bolts for the alternator (but left the wires connected rolling it to the left) after I disconnected the battery. I also loosened the p/s line before the alt. removal in hopes it would be enough. Obviously not. All else in the video was spot on! As a fellow mechanic, I KNOW videoing simultaneously was very challenging. Messy enough with 2 hands! Maybe a go pro head or chest cam would help. I easily could have figured it out on my own, (replaced a couple hundred) but technology is nice can be helpful to see it done first. Still, great video and thank you. Props!
@deankruse31 This one didn't have a belt-driven fan. I sometimes use a long chisel to bump the fan clutch nut loose, but you can get fan clutch wrenches at some parts stores with the loaner tool program.
This vid is very helpful! I am replacing my 2002 JGC water pump as soon as it hits my doorstep.. Thanks for taking the time to shoot it. If you can do it one-handed while recording with a camera, I better be able to do it!
Thanks a lot did mines last night great instruction on video .. I had to take my alternator off though to get pump out . And I keep my pistol and a flashlight
Great video, I just replaced my thermostat and water pump. I used a wife brush to clean the gasket area and sprayed it clean with my water hose. I also flushed the radiator while I was at it. I also just took, the water pump out from the bottom out from the skid guard.
Thanks for the instructions! I may need to do this real soon since I think my water pump is making an audible sound that sounds almost like the pulley is scraping the housing. May be the bearings doing it. But just to be sure I need to check it for leaks or any kind of wobbling on the pulley. The noise gets louder little by little every time I drive it.
Damm, I wondered what that screw was at the end of the top hose. LOL. Could have saved me a lot of worry. Knowledge is power! Thanks for the video, I need to go out and bleed my engine of air.
@sadbuttru2 The 4.0L thermostat is on the top. The thermostat housing has a heater hose & an upper radiator hose on it. Most likely you will have a paper gasket instead of a rubber O-ring. So, no, they aren't the same. There are some similarities, but I think the 4.7L is easier.
I surely couldn't do all of this myself, but my mechanic is doing this today... wanted to see how much of a hassle it was for him to do. {Rick's Japanese Car Care... who hates working on Jeepers but will work on mine as I am family} Thanx so much for the video!!
Well, it's funny that he called it a pistol when in fact it's a revolver. A pistol is more like a semi-automatic handgun.Even though the name came from "revolving pistol" , that term hasn't been used for a long time.Still, good thinking never leave home without being able to protect yourself.
@roadragecustoms I don't have a belt driven fan. It is part of the shroud and it is electric. Trying to remove the 4 bolts to remove the shroud/fan is nearly has hard as anything else. You can't get to the bolts!!! With the shroud removed, it would be 10x easier. Back into the garage to see what I can do without removing the shroud. I will check back later for your feedback.
I believe the 2001 has a belt driven fan that the 2004 does not have. If so, the fan blade and fan shroud should be removed from the engine compartment together. Otherwise the 4.7L's should be similar.
Hey there roadragecustoms. My Temp Gage is in the red zone. Any suggestions before I head of to the mechanic? Just had my fan belts replaced, air con cleaned out. Cheers mate.
@JGray85 BCM = Body Control Module. You'll need to tow it to a Jeep dealer unless you have a DRBIII Scan tool or equivalent . You may have damaged your key, or you may have another electronic issue. If your key has a gray cover on the end of it, there is a chip that sends a signal to the vehicle inside of it. If it is black or aftermarket, it doesn't have it. Each key sends a different signal that has to be learned by the BCM with the scan tool.
I have a 04 jeep grand Cherokee ltd and as soon as i turn on the ac. the temp goes up all the way, check gauges light turns on. I have a new fan and radiator, any thoughts?
@JGray85 It sounds like a key problem. I think the vehicle isn't recognizing it. If the key is correct, there may be a problem with the BCM or the key needs to be relearned by the vehicle.
You bleed cooling system with engine on or off. I have seen people say on and keep adding coolant till no more bubbles. I saw you did it having the vehicle off.
GREAT VIDEO! Wish it had been shot on the WAYYY more popular 4.0l instead of the V8 just to get the little details of the 4.0l engine bay but they are very similiar. Hope this helps some people out. I've done several of them on my own Jeeps and friends as well but having a visual reference while you're working never hurts. Now... you dont have a video of how to remove/replace the turn signal/cruise control/wiper stalk on a '98 Buick Park Avenue do ya? lol. Job is NOT going to be fun.
I should have read the comments first and seen about removing the alternator. That's what I ended up doing, but it took a lot of cussing to get to that point. I don't know how you get it out with the alternator still in.
Dave, great video! TY! The thermostat went bad in my gf's 2006 4.7L Jeep Commander, n I tried running it without the thermostat in as it was late and no parts stores were open. I figured I could just pull it out and had to keep the seal in to prevent all the water from pouring out, but I was wrong, I went back in the next day with the new thermostat, n I found that the seal from the old thermostat was gone and have to find it in the cooling sys. What direction does the water run to start looking?
What a great video..! excellent explanation and video shots! I replaced my water pump, thermostat and both hoses last week! Thank you! Now if you could make a video to help me replace my one piece rear main seal that is leaking badly..!
@roadragecustoms the differences are trim packages, interior and exterior. other than that..... not much! Although im certain you can get the 4.7 ho in neither, and only the overland.
Mines just started leaking below the crank shaft pulley yesterday when I was driving. What happened first was the check gauge warning light came on and the temperature gauge maxed out at high so I pulled over into a store parking stall and turned off the engine. Then I took a flash light and crawled under to see if there were coolant leaks and there was. It was leaking pretty fast below the crank shaft pulley and some on the thermostat housing. I figured that I was from the water pump because the water pump is above the crank shaft pulley. I couldn't really see anything from the water pump itself but that's had to be the only thing with coolant' that I could think of that would leak. What I don't get is why the check gauges light and temperature gauge maxed out. It's really hot out these days but this is the first time this has happened since I bought this car roughly a year ago. I just changed the coolant hoses last month. Also changed the pressure tube because transmission fluid was leaking from the fitting. It has a hairline crack. I just bought a new water pump, radiator cap, coolant and super coolant today. Tomorrow I'm going to work on it. I'll remove the thermostat and run it with out it and see if it runs cooler that way. It had problems with the coolant bubbling and coming out of the overflow. To prevent that from happening I would have to let the car idle for awhile to let everything cool down a bit before turning off the engine.
Yep, my water pump seems to be leaking, on my 2004 6cyl 4.0. I have no heat, & I hear gurgling air bubbles in the system. I of course, don't really know spit about cars, until I need to fix something. Thanks for the vid. Any advice you can give based on whay I have described, is greatly appreciated.
Any reason you didn't use any RTV Sealant? I hear some people recommend that it be used when installing the new pump. Does it make any difference with potential future leaks?
I'll ask again. The radiator shroud has been removed and when did the fan blade/clutch assembly get taken off. Should'nt that be the first task? and put back on the last?
Thanks for watching & commenting! It's always good to hear that people are getting some benefit out of these videos. I'm not cash shy. Cash is Dave shy!
Cool Video boss, this definately help me out alot. I got a 04 Jeep GC SE with a problem with overheating problems for 5 months now. I Changed everything else except for the water pump, so now it's working just fine. I have only one question, is there a reset button for the dashboard indicator lamp to switch off or do I have to replace that too?
I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L six cylinder. I ran out of fuel yesterday, and since this evening, the engine idles roughly, it feels like it is about to stall. It comes and goes. I filled up the gas tank and used fuel system cleaner, drove around about 30-40 minutes, the problem still comes and goes. I also have P0171 and P0455 codes on the dashboard. Any suggestions? is it an easy fix? Thank you in advance.
I just replaced the radiator on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L. I'm being told that when I replenish the coolant and power steering fluid that I need to bleed the cooling system, any tips on how to do that? Thanks
Thanks for the video. A garage wanted to charge me $450 to change out the pump on my 2004 Wrangler Unlimited. I know how much the pump costs at AutoZone so I'm doing it myself. I'll have it done for about $100 with coolant. One question though, my last water pump change was about 14 years ago and I took out the radiator to do it. Isn't that advised to prevent damage?
The whole time I was watching I was thinking "what an awesome video, no music, and no useless commentary". Clean and concise instructions.
As the semi-proud, but cash-shy owner of a 2004 WJ Overland, you have no idea how much these how-to videos will save me. Thank You!!
My fears of having to remove the hydraulically driven fan assembly were cleared after watching this video. Thank you kind sir.
thanks man i didn't realize it was that easy. my water pump went out on my 1999 jeep Cherokee sport and you just saved me about 400 dollars from not taking it to a shop!!

I have to replace the water pump on my 2004 4.7L Dodge Durango and it has the same water pump as your Jeep. Awesome video! Thanks!
I removed the alternator and stud holding the low line a.c. hose clamp. No jockeying to remove the pump. 5 extra minutes and came out easier.
Just did my 2001 GC. Removed the alternator to get the pump out. Made it very easy to install new pump with gasket in tact. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for the video. My 2004 Grand Cherokee overheated today at 104,000 miles and I'll be doing this exact job tomorrow when I get the parts. Very helpful!

Where do I send this guy a check?!?! Great work! Mine went out yesterday. I'm calling a mechanic friend over to help me replace it but this vid makes me feel so much better about the process.
you are the most direct and simple a person can be when explaining things such is this. I'm a subscriber and I don't even work on cars that often
TYVM!! I had a leak coming from my thermostat housing. After watching this video I was able to tackle the job in only a few minutes. Awesome video. Keep up the great work

thanks man, because of u, i did this myself on my 96 jeep grand cherokee and saved 500 dollars at a mechanic!
If the housing is rusted bad, replace the housing. Check the hose & clamp. Wouldn't hurt to replace the t-stat since you have to replace the gasket anyway. Is that what you wanted to know?
"GOT MY FLASHLIGHT AND MY PISTOL...WE ARE READY FOR A TEST DRIVE" Love that guy!
Thanks for the information, I was thinking I had to pull the Water Pump to get to the Thermostat... You just saved me from a whole day of work....

@gumbiotch This pump had a good, thick rubber o ring. I would usually use black or gray RTV, but I didn't think it was necessary.
Same reason I have a spare tire. I hope to never need it, but it's there if I do.
Thanks a lot did mines last night great instruction on video .. I had to take my alternator off though to get pump out . And I keep my pistol and a flashlight
Thank you! I am doing this for a friend tomorrow, and I need to double check what I was in for.
Very informative video doing a pump in my moms jeep tonight thanks for the straight forward video and nice piece on the ride along
Great, I'm glad I could help. Thanks for the comment and for subscribing!
Great video, I just replaced my thermostat and water pump. I used a wife brush to clean the gasket area and sprayed it clean with my water hose. I also flushed the radiator while I was at it. I also just took, the water pump out from the bottom out from the skid guard.
wire brush not wife brush lol
Thank you big brother. Got it done before bed time for work
great camera work and perfect lighting, i could see everything clearly
This was so helpful. After watching, I knew I could do this job. Thank you for posting this.

Great video!!! Just finished up. I had no experience with any coolant system before. Came out great. Thanks I also just purchased my first pistol.
Not everyone will get the pistol reference. I think it's hilarious.
Lmao
Well, it's funny that he called it a pistol when in fact it's a revolver. A pistol is more like a semi-automatic handgun.Even though the name came from "revolving pistol" , that term hasn't been used for a long time.Still, good thinking never leave home without being able to protect yourself.
Democracia Cuba l
Thank you Sir! You did a great job with the camera work. It helped a lot.
very good video , it shows exactly how to do things without jokes and comments that are not necesary , good video again !!
Thank you for the very clear and concise video. Was very helpful and easy to follow. Cheers.
Found it's best to remove the alternator to get the pump out. Easier than messing with PS hoses
@roadragecustoms
I don't have a belt driven fan. It is part of the shroud and it is electric. Trying to remove the 4 bolts to remove the shroud/fan is nearly has hard as anything else. You can't get to the bolts!!! Thanks for the video.....to remove mines I slid it down & it came out & reinstalled easily..
@JGray85 BCM = Body Control Module. You'll need to tow it to a Jeep dealer unless you have a DRBIII Scan tool or equivalent . You may have damaged your key, or you may have another electronic issue. Awesome vid. I was able to see and understand everything. I will be replacing mine within the next couple hours. Thanks
Thanks for posting!!! you just saved me alot of time, money and frustration.
Very instructive. Please feel fre to send any other work you've done on Jeep GC.
Thank You
A pistol is always a good idea on a test drive. Like the video, cause I'm doing this on my friends 2005 Jeep tomorrow.
How did you get the fan out of the way?
That was a damn good & informative video. Now, I'm going to go home & make it look like I really know what it is I'm doing.
Excellent Video!! Thank you very much, gave me confidence and saved hassle of going to the dealer!
I have a 04 jeep grand Cherokee ltd and as soon as i turn on the ac. the temp goes up all the way, check gauges light turns on. I have a new fan and radiator, any thoughts?
Dude thats so cool. Wish I was that knowledgeable. And you sound like johnny bravo
@JGray85 It sounds like a key problem. I think the vehicle isn't recognizing it. If the key is correct, there may be a problem with the BCM or the key needs to be relearned by the vehicle.
Just did mine this morning using Dave and your advice. Thanks much :)
@her1132 That was a 1/4 inch drive air ratchet. Those bolts aren't extremely tight. A regular ratchet would work, just not as fast.
@mrtosh I really don't remember. It may have had a rubber plug over the area where the weep hole was.
what are the manufacturer specifications for the water pump bolts?
Good Job, now i know what I have to look forward to next week.
You bleed cooling system with engine on or off. I have seen people say on and keep adding coolant till no more bubbles. I saw you did it having the vehicle off.
Thanks,, had a hell of a time looking for the thermostat, so use to GM. Now I just hope it is only the Thermostat....
GREAT VIDEO! Wish it had been shot on the WAYYY more popular 4.0l instead of the V8 just to get the little details of the 4.0l engine bay but they are very similiar. Hope this helps some people out. Thank you very much for the video. Really instructive. One question though is what size is that bleeder tool?
@hp11208 There is one shock absorber behind each wheel.
thank you excellent ilustration .. must be a master
Flashlight and Pistol are must haves!
Thanks brother I appreciate it........very helpful
@roadragecustoms the differences are trim packages, interior and exterior. other than that..... not much!
Although im certain you can get the 4.7 ho in neither, and only the overland.
Excellent production! Really well done. (But I think I'll take mine to the shop.)
Why no mention of the torque specs?

+Clyde Yamasaki i thot about that too, remember he said "O" ring, probably doesn't have a gasket. just guessing
good and clean replacement. you the man very helpful thank you
Yep, my water pump seems to be leaking, on my 2004 6cyl 4.0. I have no heat, & I hear gurgling air bubbles in the system. thanx bro really helpful keep doing what u doing great job
Very helpful- especially enjoy the pistol part.
I have only one question, is there a reset button for the dashboard indicator lamp to switch off or do I have to replace that too?
your video was really helpful thank you now i know what's what
I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L six cylinder.
Thanks
Thanks for the vid its going to help me change my pump. How did you get the fan off?? another opinion would be helpful
@1234kaylam If you have the same engine size, yes. Just don't remove the pump.
You were right. thanks man. I had the worst time getting off that fan.
