We do not just play with colors. It has a very deep meaning, when everybody is colored like that you cannot tell any difference between them and everybody, irrespective of the caste, creed, nationality and status looks alike.

I would keep my perspectives why HOLI is so fun and why we enjoy it:
1. [Religious]- It is assumed to be succession of Good over Bad (Lord Vishnu comes to earth and kills bad king of demonic behavior).
2. [Technical Factor] :- It is celebrated on First day of Chaitra Month (Acc. to Indian Calendar). As India has been known for agriculture, This is month of season/weather change & hence farmers enjoy. Since farmers could buy and sell products other market also starts gaining. Hence, a period of happiness arrives and hence HOLI adds all religions and not just Hindus. But now this factor is failing.
Sadly, Capitalist market has ruined happiness of farmers & also HOLI. HOLI was meant to be played with natural colors & water but now synthetics r being used which is harmful of body. Also farmers are not gaining because farmers can't produce that much color products(turmeric & flowers etc.) against chemical Industries first ruins skins of rich people then sell skin moisturizers. It's sad.
Also, radhakrishna used to play holi.... And it's a big festival in mathura vrindavan

Holika was the aunt of prahalada, a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Holika was immune to fire and was a demon and wanted to burn prahalada under the instruction of prahalada's father hiranyakashyapu who hated Lord Vishnu.
Eventually holika was burnt when she tried to immolate along with prahalada. This is a festival to celebrate the devotee's devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Holi is not a religious thing, it is a culture thing. We welcome and celebrate Spring with colors after harsh winter.
It has religious thing. There is mythological story behind it. Holi word came from Holika. Holi is just not about throwing colours or playing with colours. There are two holi’s which are celebrated- 1) choti(small) holi 2)badi (large) holi.
You are just about a month away from holi, i say if you are in india for a month, you must enjoy celebrating holi.
