What are Deserts? Desert Facts for Kids

A desert is an area that gets less than 10 inches of precipitation per year.
All deserts and semi-deserts together make up over 30% of our Earth’s land area. Deserts can be found on all seven continents.
But both people and animals live in desert areas, in fact, only rain forests have more kinds of life. You wouldn’t think a desert would be a very good place to live but, over 1 billion people live in desert areas.
Some deserts can get as hot as 120 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and drop to 0 degrees Fahrenheit at night!
