Tangerine Dream - Valley Of The Sun

  • Recorded in 1985/6. From "The Dream Roots Collection".
    Johannes Schmoelling had just left the group, and Edgar Froese and Chris Franke found themselves in much the same position as they had done before the recording of Green Desert in 1973 and Force Majeure in 1978: They were a duo again. Edgar Froese remembers: "We had no idea how long it would take until we were once again a trio status, so we had to go it alone so to speak." Drawing on the ideas contained in the previous studio album Le Parc, both Froese and Franke worked up a great amount of material between October 1985 and January 1986 that stayed unreleased for ten years until it appeared on The Dream Roots Collection at last.

    I'm 75 and I still love the music of the Tangerine dream .back in 1969.It was the first time I've ever heard the Tangerine dream, my first album I bought was "Phaedra"and have still got the LP,I seen the dream back in the early eighties at Ipswich, what a great experience, they were brilliant.

      +MrFlorianschneider Indeed, but actually no one ever dies. It is only the temporal material body that stops functioning. Edgar Froese himself knew that, and once said: "There is no death, there is just a change in our cosmic address". So he understood the fundamental wisdom presented to us in the timeless and magnificent Bhagavad-gita (www.asitis.com), written down 5000 years ago, and teaching everything we should know about the eternal soul, karma and reincarnation

      @@TheFpCassini , indeed. Of the 4 tracks from that 'session', 2 of them (Beach Bay Bunker & Red Morpho) are definately songs by Edgar Froese [you can compare them to his solo works; Froese has a very distinct and recognisable style of composing]. The 2 other tracks (Valley Of The Sun & Vanishing Blue) are definately songs by Christopher Franke, maybe with some added synths by Froese later on.
      If you first listen to Valley Of The Sun & Vanishing Blue and then to Beach Bay Bunker & Red Morpho, you can notice the difference in how both sets of songs are composed.

      Phew. There's always been since maybe Phaedra, a sadness in much of the music. When Edgar crossed over, as I listened to some stuff I thought it was as if he'd composed his own requiem music........the last part Of Rubycon is just unbearably sad, though I just survived it a few hours ago. No way could I bear to hear it for years after a massively heavy bereavement, took about 13 yrs to get the CD after that.

    Being an almost strictly digital production, I still think it has an analogue warmth about it! Absolutely beautiful, as always, when it comes to TD!

    • @camalienator
      @camalienator ปีที่แล้ว

      well, technically, if it is made with synthesizers, it is analog, because it changes an analog wave function. You can find more on it if you search for Wendy Carlos' explanation of it

    • @anders6705
      @anders6705 ปีที่แล้ว

      But, It just isn’t, is it!
      I’ve worked with synthesizers since 1982, and I know how digital machines changed everything! The warmth diappeared, unless you really worked with them, and still, it was not the same……I remember my first DX7…. It was great! But it was COLD, no matter what you did….The only time it was ok, was when You played the saxophone with the breathcontrol device, which was quite expensive…… Otherwise it was brilliant with say, later Gary Numan….. when he did New Anger! Then came the Roland D50, in 1987, which was much, much better in copying warmth and analogue sounds…..

    • @anders6705
      @anders6705 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, then fuck it! Its all waves an waveterms, But You know, Digital is 1 and 0, and in a few moments tri state….. Analogue is just waveforms, created by energy produced by electric current, fed through different resistrors, filters and oscillators….it is not an exact science, it is controlled by the human behind the keyboard, the current avaliable at the time, and lack of memorycircuits makes it much more difficult to master! You have to be a better man and musician to play it! As Wendy Carlos was! He/She was/is one of the best, Ever!!!

    • @PhilAndersonOutside
      @PhilAndersonOutside ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the reason why is because Frose and Franke had master-level understanding of synthesis and programming. This in a sense freed them from the confines of the default of "coldness" that digital synthesizers of that day created.

    Great period in TD's music. You get the impression that Froese and Franke were putting stuff together after Schmoelling left in October 1985 but then maybe shelved it after Paul Haslinger joined the band in early 1986 so they could put out what he brought to the band. Lovely piece this. This and Vanishing Blue were worth the asking price of the Dream Roots box set alone!

      @@jurjenvanderhoek316 : well, I rarely use that word (masterpiece), but I do understand you. :o)) I do prefer Optical Race to the two next, even though I don't dislike them... I'm rather a fan of the 70's and early 80's era of TD... just to situate myself. Optical Race has got a warmer sound compared to what came next, and several tracks I really enjoy a lot. I bought the LP at the time of release as I followed them closely and regret I didn't try to find a good bazrgain for the CD (I bought a CD player quite late (early 1989) and the CD's were so expensive that I went on buying a lot of LP's until they disappeared). I own now the re-recorded version by Edgar Froese, that's got a bonus track but as a whole, I hear some little differences and I'd prefer to have the original recording on CD.

    For some reason, there's at least one part of this piece that reminds me of Erasure's music. Maybe Vince Clarke listened to 1980s Tangerine Dream recordings?

    And thus we truly hear part of the origins and influence upon Trance.
    I kicked off my passion for electronic music with Kraftwerk's 'Autobahn'. I thereafter stumbled upon the early works of Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, and found the absolute masters of the art of electronic diversity...Tangerine Dream!
    Somebody mentioned Poland...an absolutely KICKING album for its time and displaying the T. Dreams outstanding ability to manipulate the electronic sound from the extreme to the melodical, with a pinch of early T.V Sci-Fi thrown in (Street hawk)
    Go to the SORCERER (The wages of fear) for the deepest end of T.Dream's electronic reach and range, however, as this is basically one of those rare examples of a band composing an absolutely PERFECT sequence of scores for a movie.

    Never heard this track before, what a Gem.. My first encounter with Tangerine Dream was with Streethawk, and a theme Tune that was a series i watched when i was like 11. I loved the Soundtrack and never knew who it was for years, then.. Somehow a film came on TV i Think it was Legend, years later. The film i thought at the time was not very good. But the Music intrigued me. The film ended and the Titles came up. TANGERINE DREAM. I had in the back of my Mind a recollection of them..
    I searched the local Record Store and found a section of Electronic Music. My first purchase was Electronic Meditation, i was'nt that much impressed with it.. it was like mediocre to what i thought.
    But one Track stud out, it was White Eagle. It had all the right Tones and Elements what to me was Music. On that one Track I purchased one more Album. It was a best of Compilation. I think it had Livemiles, what an Album.
    I can hear that this fits in with that time frame.. But too be honest i couldn't find anything to relate too when Johannes left. I have since began to follow Loom, go there you will know what i am sketching about. Too my opinion the Brains behind TDream.

      Want to see a movie with the BEST TD soundtrack, and a fantastic movie too? "Thief" made in 1981 starring James Caan and directed by Michael Mann.

    TD flew under my radar in the 70/80s. Now retired, with a pair of BT headphones I have just discovered their genius. A bottle and a half of Spanish red on the roof terrace and it has been worth all the hassle of flying Ryanair to Malaga. Fantastic.....chin chin

    London, England
    November 1991
    The sun was setting in the horizon behind the hills. Qamar Mackenzie's legs pumped to the rhythm of her run; next week is the school rugby game and she made sure to stay active. The sky had become a fiery orange and a cool autumn breeze blew through the thick fabrics of her sweatshirt and headscarf; it's time to head on home before the street lights turn on. Big Ben rang it's bells, telling everyone it's the evening and rush hour resumed from the morning. At last, Qamar made it to the station where her train to Southwark pulled in. She sat in her seat, breathing hard but satisfied.

      I know this song was released in 1985-1986 but the early 90s is somewhat transitioning from the 1980s
