Yes, this is how we perceived it in Slovakia (formerly Czechoslovakia) in the 90s, when American series and films began to be broadcast in our country after the fall of the Iron Curtain. But after all the terrible things I've experienced with my health, I'm glad I live here...14 years ago, I became seriously ill. I got swine flu virus A(H1N1), multi-organ failure, 3 months in a coma in the ICU, another months of follow-up treatment. And permanent consequences with kidney failure, for 13 years I had to go on expensive dialysis 3 times a week, I had difficult joint operations, I have titanium hip joints, the entire femur, joint, ankle and difficult stays in the hospital and months in rehabilitation institutions, monthly I take thousands of Euro worth of medication, and a year ago, after only six months of waiting, when I was included in the transplant program,
I received a kidney from a dead donor. And what cost to me? Zero. Only mandatory health insurance in tens of Euros (Dollar has the same value here) per month.. Yes, our health care is not in the best condition, but that is not the fault of the system setup, it is good, but the fault of the politicians who stole from the health care through planted companies billions. We also have paid maternity (and paternity) leave of up to 3 years!, medicines prescribed by a specialist doctor are free, once a year a preventive check-up at the dentist is free, of course birth and postpartum care of the newborn (mandatory) is free, vaccinations, etc., etc. My mother was treated for cancer, unfortunately she lost the battle, but she didn't pay anything, insulin and such medicines are of course free, or with only a small additional payment... There is also a mandatory and paid employee leave of 4-6 weeks, etc., etc. When I hear that the Americans have to pay for everything, I feel sorry for them... They should put pressure on the government so that at least some of these ends, which are completely obvious to us, are fulfilled. We are a young democracy, we used to be a socialist block behind the "Iron Curtain", we have big problems with corruption in politics, but such "conveniences" have been a matter of course for over 100 years.
Greetings from Slovakia, formerly Czechoslovakia in Central Europe

Like, man, sorry to break it to you but YOU are the foreigner, not the French people living here 🙄 if you do not want to see French people, do not come to France... same with any other countries.

I suspect most people in the world are sick of hearing how the US won WW2 like they were the only participants... Of course they forget that the rest of the world was at war over 2 years before the US joined in... and even then, it was only because the Japanese provoked them at Pearl Harbour. It would be interesting to see what would have happened if the Japanese hadn't attacked.

Its both funny and sad that you mention that prison life in the US is better for some people outside of it. From a (Western) European perspective the US prison system is cruel, torturous and has some slave labour. A good perspective on this can be the video "How Norway's Prisons Are Different From America's | NowThis" which shows the Norwegian prison system, radically different from the US variant. The video "Why The US Prison System Is The Worst In The Developed World" compared the Norwegian and Finnish prison system with the US one.

Also there is a huge "hidden" factor that is in plain view for the rest of the world. American prisons are for profit. And there are alot of private prison systems that get payed by the inmate. This gives an incentive for private prisons to cut costs. Costs on basic living neeeds where family members need to fill an account with money so the inmate can buy basic need (commissary account).
They can also cut costs on guards and rely on CCTV only with 1 guard in a crows nest that needs to call for backup if shit hits the fan en response times are low. Inmates need to fend for themselve and their own safety. Inmates with no gang affiliations come out of prison with gang affiliations for protection. Inmates going for short streteches of months end up with sentences of years for added time for just defending themselves.
All this because its an incentive for private prisons to create living standarts that will most likeley result in added prison time so inmates stay inside longer so they can make more profit per inmate.
And als said before. Profit of their forced labour for pennies on the dollar.

    Canadian healthcare:
I got hit by a car at 21 and broke my leg badly. I was rushed to a hospital in an ambulance, had surgery to put a pin in it, got a brainscan because my head whacked the windshield good, had a week and a half in the hospital, had a cast, then later a "boot" and a cane, and a few months of physiotherapy. Cost to me: $0.
My mother had severe diabetic complications in the last several years of her life. She couldn't drive and had Mr Magoo style glasses, was pretty much legally blind, was on dialysis, had nerve pain, had a foot amputated and needed a wheelchair and we had to add a ramp to the back deck, she needed a care worker to come out during the day, had several cardiac episodes leading to ambulance rides to and lengthy stays in the hospital. This did hit us financially, but if we were in America I have no doubt we'd have lost our house.
I was diagnosed borderline diabetic myself at around 30, went to the hospital, got an IV, a bunch of blood tests, a blood monitor with a bunch of needles and strips, was briefly prescribed two daily pills, was enrolled in a week long educational class for diabetics, and for several years - until diet and exercise got it under control - went to a blood clinic every 6 months followed by an appointment with my GP to go over the results. Cost to me: about $20 - 30 for the blood monitor with needles and strips and another $15 - 20 for the two bottles of pills they prescribed.
During one of my follow ups with my GP he saw a red blotch on my back that he didn't like. He referred me to a specialist who scheduled an operation to slice it off, after which he gave me an ointment to apply to the area daily for a few weeks. Cost to me: $0.
America sounds like a nightmare. Like most I grew up on a lot of American TV and movies and such, but as I got older I could very clearly see that the reality didn't match the entertainment at all. Forget moving there, I'm hesitant to visit these days. It seems to be a third world country.

After several visits to my local doctor in the state hospital I belong to I was sent to the oncologic hospital to have a biopsy of the tumor. I was diagnosed with breast cancer so I was assigned to have several chemotherapy courses and surgery. Right after I learnt my diagnosis I left for sick leave and my employer paid me a quite good compensation. I was on sick leave for six months and I wasn`t fired. And I didn`t pay a rouble for consultations at any medical establishment I visited, not a single copeck for chemotherapy, mastectomy I had and for my stay in the oncologic hospital. Everything was covered by our NHS. All I paid for is public transport and suburban trains tickets when I was being tested in my native town and in the capital of my region. And I have nothing but only good memories about my chemotherapist, my surgeons and nurses who took care of me during that time. Now I`m being paid a disability pension from the state and I`m being taken care of by a special social service while I`m on my rehab. That`s it. I don`t even want to imagine if I could survive all this in the US.

Not a bill for any of it.. not $1 and I was paid 66% of my salary for 4 months from government unemployment insurance until I was able to return to work and didn't have to worry about losing my job because it's illegal to fire someone for a medical reason. It boggles my mind the added stress that is put upon US citizens. It was bad enough having to deal with the medical crisis alone but if I had to worry about the medical bills, how I was going to pay my rent and survive while I was off work and whether I would still have a job.. And you don't have your politicians desperately trying to dismantle and plunder the state to be more like the USA, or to retry the fascist experiments from the last century, like us next door in Sweden - and don't even get me started in the UK, which I left to move to Sweden because it was becoming so greedy and uncaring, and which now is looking more and more like a failed state.
I spent more than a year living in the USA as well - a year that I both loved and hated. It bankrupted me (yes, due to health issues, but also due to the US banks main business model being theft), and I was living in an incredibly weird mix of decent hardworking people or fantastically creative people and straight up psychopaths, all stewing in a combination of interest and opinion on everything despite being ignorant about mostly everything, with hardly any actual rights or freedom beyond soundbites. That was 2 decades ago - now I see something that looks more like a slow-moving civil war.
The USA has huge potential, utterly betrayed by those who quote the enlightenment idealism of the (slave-owning) founding fathers every day, whilst managing in reality what looks more like a mediaeval peasant culture than anything else - corporate slavery/serfdom :(

I don’t know if you have watched this bit, I assume not, a) because he doesn’t speak well about German politics at all, not in this nor in all his other programs, and b) he talks about the flaws of US foreign politics, the installment of Pinochet, the military support of pre Komeini Iran, as block against USSR, the support of Saddam Hussein to fight against then Komeini Iran. The support of Afghanistan freedom fighters that ultimately gave birth Al Quaida
Could you please quote my part where I portrayed Germany is a beacon of light, because it isn’t, this country has a lot of improvement to do, as any other country, there is no such thing as perfect country. You don’t know me, you are implying that I am a proud German citizen, well I am not, I don’t care how the soccer team does at World Cup, I don’t wave a German flag, I don’t sing the anthem. I just happen to be german because my parents lived here, fucked and mum gave birth to me here. I am sorry if that is against your will, I had no say in this as well.

Law on lobbying. This is the USA's BIGGEST mistake
Anyone with a lot of money can legally buy an MP/Senator to vote against a law requiring them to give more rights to their workers. By the same token, this lobbying law allows anyone with a lot of money to commission a law and buy the right people to pass it…
In effect, your law on lobbying is the legalization of corruption, but only at the highest level!

At that time I had no idea what the American health care system was like and just thought "Well, go to the doctor, why the money?,, because here in Germany it is mandatory to have health insurance and it is almost always covered 100%. I really feel sorry for the people who live there with a serious illness or just get sick, which is actually normal worldwide.

Large Corporations will always exploit people as they are deeply rooted in self destructive capitalism. The real problem is the government. Like having limited sick days at all is illegal in a whole bunch of countries. Ofc you don't always get payed unlimited sick days but like you can't get fired for something you can't control.

It's absolutely not complicated. It's the most straight-forward thing in the world, that no one in this country ever wants to talk about. What we do with Healthcare, and Pharma isn't dumb if you happen to be an executive for, or own stock in those companies. It makes them disgustingly wealthy, and it only requires the sacrifice of a few tens of thousands of lives a year to maintain. It also requires BOTH parties in government happily do the bidding of those corporations, but it turns out that's not too difficult to get them to do. Just a little petty bribery, and their priorities become everyone's priorities.
Oh, the thing you are talking about with the political parties would be the two party duopoly. The parties control the election process to such an extent that you will likely never get the chance to vote 3rd party, or if you do they'll lose, or even if they win you have a couple decent people in a legislative branch of 535 criminals. It's pointless.

I was thinking about moving to America ( California ), but then i started to do a ton of research, and the more i learned, the more horrified i got..if i decided to move there, just based on the "American illusion", then i would have made a huge mistake. I have heard people that did that, and now they feel trapped there. They want to get out, but for different reasons ( family etc ) it is just not possiple for them. The "American dream " is just that...only a dream..or to be more correct : The American Lie...most Americans are still living in some kind of Matrix that have been pulled over their eyes from the moment they are born...very sad and quite disturbing 🙄

  • @TheSaltyAdmiral
    @TheSaltyAdmiral ปีที่แล้ว +2

A big problem is that when people hear "average", they think "median". Average is an OK metric to use if there is low inequality, but when inequality is high it becomes extremely deceiving.
Example: Imagine a workplace with 5 workers and an income range of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 100 dollars per hour. This means that 4/5 workers at that place has slave wages and lives in absolute poverty. Yet the average hourly wage shows up as 22 dollars per hour, which is a decent salary. The median income however would reveal only 3 dollars per hour, which obviously would be much closer to the reality these workers live in. So this average representation of America makes it look deceptively on par with other industrialized countries, but the reality is that the bottom 30% in America has it much much worse than the bottom 30% in any other industrialized country. Because the ultra rich 1% pulls up the average figure just enough to hide the dark reality tens of millions of Americans live in.

I'm honest in saying that stress like that can give you frustration that urge you to lash out. Luckily I don't have to think about that, because my mom is beating cancer because of the exceptional proffessionals that are helping her. Think of the way most people live:
They force themselves to wake up early in the morning, dress up, drive straight to some workplace, spend 8 hours or so doing work they hate, drive back home, surf the Internet or watch TV, and then go to sleep, only to repeat the same routine the next day for almost their entire lives.
In our culture, we consider this kind of living as normal and even healthy, but if you stop and think about it, it’s not healthy at all.
Life can be immensely beautiful, yet instead of making the most out of it, we choose to waste it, and that’s because we’ve been programmed to believe that this is the only way to live. Habits, tradition and dogmatic beliefs have turned us into mindless automatons who follow a predetermined path that was forced upon us by society.
This programming, however, can be broken, if we realize that it’s in our hands to transform the way we’re living, and gather enough courage in our hearts to think and act differently. Then, life can be turned into a celebration filled with joy, creativity, love and play.

Friend of mine is a nurse at a catholic bishop owned hospital. They had a meeting about expenses and where to make cut backs due to patients not paying their bills. The higher ups noticed that the hospital spends alot on staffing, and are just considering letting go of like 25% total all departments combined. Another idea was to deny services to certain people, like drug "users" (not just addicts).

When I told them I was perfectly fine and was actually participating in the protest efforts, they said stuff along the line of "but don't you love your country ?".. I was completely dumbfounded.. Of course I love my country, I love my people. That's WHY we're protesting, because the assholes in charge are constantly trying to sell our nation to the highest bider.
