People don't realize back then there was no TV and they are totally in tune with everything around them. I't seems the arts was not only discipline but a way to express ones social or integral position. There senses were totally intact and therefore could see a setup a mile away. The final technique I assume would be associated with prestige and supreme dignity amongst the monks. I'm sure that they were in tune spiritually with all technology tries to duplicate.
