    At 5:16 you started saying that the straw was turning into soil, That is what your raised bed soil should have looked like. The raised bed soil was too compacted, that is why you had so many curved and funny looking potatoes. They had to fight the soil to grow. All that straw (if you haven't composted it yet) work it into that raised bed.

    • @VideosByJimbo

      Cool! I have four plants, each in their own container. They won't be done for some time though since It's a late variety. But I'm hoping the yield will be good. I used compost-rich soil with straw on top.

      @@Alexis-iq7lz How big is your container? I'm thinking doing the same thing...with one in each container...will this produce bigger straighter potatoes?

    • @Alexis-iq7lz
      @Alexis-iq7lz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mandiegarrett1706 Around 40-50 cm in height I'd say, maybe 40 in diameter. I haven't measured them though. I mostly got greens last year, and very small sweet potatoes, but I think that was more due to the slips I bought and how late in the season it was. They were sold out most of the season and they're hard to come by here. This year I have those containers and one soft container that's a bit more shallow, but about 1m across. So I'm going to let them do what they do best and spread out and cover that whole container. Plus I'm growing my own slips this year and I have a feeling they'll do better. The roots are definitely sturdier than the slips I bought last year. I can also plant more of them this way and I can plant them earlier. I have about 30+ slips thus far. The nights are still too cold here, so I have time for them to grow larger and for me to grow more of them before I need to plant them.

    I live in the middle of Australia and soils are really poor. Very interested in growing soil.
    In fact. I put some straw down with a manure mix a few weeks ago and it’s made a massive difference already. I am also a complete newbie to gardening, I’ve two kids who I want to spark their interest so it was great seeing your children in the garden.

      The straw that I used for the sweet potatoes this season was second-year straw. Last season was my first year ever using straw. I experimented with tomato plants, melons and a few other plants. New straw bales have to be conditioned with nitrogen before you can plant in them. Second-year straw is broken down really well and ready to be planted in. I did sprinkle in some blood meal, bone meal, and epsom salts like I do for all my beds at the beginning of the season. Thanks for the comment Andrew, and it's good to have a new fellow Gardner in the growing community! 😁👍🙏

      Hi, Alan! Straw is very easy to work with. However, you do have to condition new bales with nitrogen (Plenty of TH-cam videos on "How To"). Mine were actually second year straw, so they were already broken down. Straw is good for two years so I'll have to get more next season. Make sure you have plenty of room for the vines to grow as long as they can. You need them for proper growth! Good luck, Alan! I hope it works out for you. Let us know how you do! 😁👍

    I’m from the south and I’m guessing there was a taste difference. The ground ones should have tasted better after curing. There’s a couple of knacks to growing good ones. They really like loose soil that is heavy in nitrogen rich compost in the soil (aged manure). They get sweeter the hotter it gets (w plenty of water). We also don’t harvest until the leaves turn yellow. (Sugar is going into the tubers). They are wonderful; good job for your first harvest.

    Awesome production! I plant sweet potatoes in kind of stripes of elevated soil (I bet there's a word for it, but my english sucks). It helps on harvesting, as the tubers for in soil level, and also forms bigger potatoes, once theres less pressure in the soil for the roots to fight against.
