Yeah I've been using something similar for a while now. The company where i work at had a big black board of acrilic around half an inch thick, they gave it to me and i even cut them to size at the company 😂. Works like a charm, even though it's glossy you don't really notice it.

👍🏼I have never seen this stuff before.
I have never seen that product where I live in Ontario. I have used coroplast sheets, think plastic cardboard. It comes in lots of different colors and is easy to cut. I purchased it from my local sign company, 55.00 for a massive 4x8 sheet.

I have a tank with the light blue factory acrylic rear wall which doesn't compliment the fish. Using some aquarium safe silicon I put this i the tank to finally change the color. Thanks for the great idea.

Hello, a friend of mine gave me a tank 36x25x18 (60 gallons I think),
I wanna have mdunas in it (because males and females look the same) I wish I could see then breeding but I don't and can't have a breeding tank, is it passible? If yes, how many males and females should start it with? If not, can I do it with peacooks?
Pls answer me, I'm almost ready to get the fishes.

Good idea and nice to add to my arsenal of options, although I tend to lean towards using black frosted glass tint film such as Velimax or rabbitpoo. Only problem with Rabbitpoo is that the max size is 17.5" x 78.7" (44.5 x 200 cm). So not ideal for your larger tanks.

What I like using for my backgrounds is textured spray paint sprayed on the back of the aquarium, not on the inside. Just seal off the top and any other area you don't want the spray to get on, and spray it on in thin coats. Currently the background I have on looks like beach sand through the glass. I got away from taping backgrounds on because I tended to get water stains on the glass behind the tank. And with the tank so close to the wall, could not get back there to clean.
Why not take some acrylic paint and a dish sponge and give it a nice textured peppered look? For the acrylic paint on a paper plate and dab it up with a dish sponge and tap along the back of your fish tank I'd give you a look but I can't attach a picture of my 55 gallon
Poster boards work fine from any Dollar Tree using 2 sided tape & is the cheapest! Nobody is going to notice the difference! 😉
Not as durable though, as I mentioned in the video. 😉
How is it when it comes to getting water in between it and the glass? A lot of times with those rolled out ones when you get water, evaporation or whatever moisture between them and the glass it looks horrible.
Not so bad, especially if you apply it with a top seam of tape. Also, because it is durable, it can easily be removed and reattached.

Is it ok to put these inside the tank?
I use 16x20 canvas paintings as backgrounds for my tanks.. 3 standing vertical fit perfectly across a 55 gallon.. 2 will fit across a 40 breeder but will have a few inches of overhang on each side..

@@TazawaTanks it's certainly unique, I have a bunch of abstract art I made a few years ago, so I have a few different options to change the background to if I get bored with it. The water adds to the visual effects of the paintings as well causing a 3d or magnifying type effect. My fish get to live inside a Jackson Pollock style painting. It's also a project you can get kids involved in too, let them design their own background for their fish.
Necessity is the mother of invention as they say.. I needed a background for my tanks, but was too frugal to spend money on it. Just like how I found that dollar store tea light wax warmers make excellent fish hideouts for Corydoras and other bottom dwellers.. not only do they hide inside, they will occasionally lay on top of it in the little dish part as well..

Is this stuff food grade plastic? Meaning could you put it IN the tank if you wanted to make a 3D background out of it?
I don’t know if these are safe for inside the tank. However, this material is what is often used in food packaging including milk cartons.

So what do you good people use to attach your background to your tank, specifically which tape. I have tried everything I can think of over the years and nothing has been remotely satisfactory, it either peels off or degrades over time and inevitably leaves glue residue behind. I've stopped using any sort of background, for several years now all I use is acrylic paint applied with a brush. You can do an enormous tank for pennies and when you want to change it all you need is a razor blade.

Once again, so timely! This is exactly what I needed to know! I tried some window tint in black that you squeegee to the glass and 3 days later it is bubbling like shrinking plastic. What a disaster. So now I will look for this product. Thank you @tazawatanks!

Hey man completely off topic, but could you possibly make a video on tank mates for mudskippers? I just recently bought one from my local pet store, they only had the one left. I feel like he’s a little lonely in there and I personally would like to see more movement in the tank. I believe I got the African.
Anything that can tolerate brackish water that won't be too much smaller than the skipper, and nothing too big. GSP or Figure 8 puffers, mollies, knight gobies, etc.

FYI 3 sheets from TAP Plastics will cover 5 20 highs and 2 29’s.
The real cheapest is to just spray paint the backside with spray paint or get a piece of vinyl from a vinyl place and install to the back of the tank using the wet install method like with window film.
Yes, and I have done both of these, but they are not as durable or as easy as this. More permanent too.

my backgrounds are made from sheets on 3/16th inch lexan and sprayed with rustoleum matte black. The sheets slide bettween the top andbottom frame and are held in place with some simple painters tape. soing the backgroun ds this way looks like you spray painted the aquarium itself. The added benefit of being able to slide out the background and replace it with a new color is as easy as 1-2-3. A 6x2 ft piece of lexan will cost you $100 bucks but as far as durable they last forever; an easy and free option for me but at less than $10 bucks these hdpe forming sheets are a good subsitute but look nowhere as good as my custom made ones. The shipping and tax make these sheets well over $20 bucks and at that point you might as well go to the bigbox store and buy a pre-printed one for less if you dont live in commifornia. Thanks to the trash in office they have ruined everything. Novemember cannot get here soon enough!

I have painted the back of my aquariums for years in just plain black. under 6 dollars for some craft black paint and good to go.
Yes, I have done that before too. I do prefer these though, as I can move them, change them, etc.

Why? They are easy to cut with scissors or a safety knife, and can also be used side-by-side. I have used these on tanks from 10 gallons to 125 gallons (20" to 72").
