As Jesus has been elevated on the cross, the pain and difficulty, the excruciating pain and difficulty of crucifixion is happening. There are a lot of things that happen in crucifixion as you are hanging there from your hands. Literally, the the joints of your shoulders and elbows and wrists become elongated. It is excruciatingly painful. The weight of your body is making it harder and harder to breathe.
The extension of your arms is making it harder and harder to breathe. The way that crucified people would gain oxygen if they would push up on their feet, which were nailed to the cross. So on that injury, they would extend themselves, take a deep breath, and then because of the pain, would usually fall and drop again. That would jar those joints and even pull them more.
The pain cannot even really be imagined from that. Jesus uses some of that precious oxygen, some of that precious breath to say things like Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing. He says things like, I thirst. He actually has a conversion session with one of the other thieves that are being crucified with him. He says to him today, You will be with me in paradise.
All of that had to be from a as Jesus's pain increases, as his anguish increases. Never forget the reason that he's going through all of this is because he loves you. Because he loves me. He's willing to be crucified because of his love for you and me.
