Also, to delay your destashing a bit, you could put the "chopping block" polishes into a cold storage place, like a box high in the closet, and leave them for a time. Then you could evaluate the emotional discomfort of getting rid of them without actually getting rid of them.
i do this with clothes! anything i put on and then dont like i put it in a 'timeout corner' rather than back in the closet or the donation pile :)
Omg I do this, too! I have a little box and I unfortunately do grab things and rescue them sometimes but I HAVE figured out some to destash!
This was what I was thinking too! I did this with my makeup when I tried to downsize and I figured out there was stuff I really missed and stuff I completely forgot I owned so I was like guess I don't need those!
I recently did this and just got rid of a third of my collection. Felt really good!
It's a law of nature that there must be as many polishes as will fit in the space you can possibly find for them.
I bought my 5th Helmer about 4 months ago. I haven't put it together yet. I don't even know exactly where it is. Probably buried under the polish that's supposed to go in it.😅

I so badly want to get helmers for my polish collection. I have over 3000 polishes and they are all stored in 48 bottle per case, briefcase style storage boxes. So I have A LOT of these briefcase polish boxes stored in my closet. My husband doesn’t particularly like ikea as a furniture choice, and that too for as many as I would need to get to house my collection right now. I’m like you Hillary, I have not yet met a polish that I am ready to destash. My husband refers to me as a polish hoarder, and I think he really believes that me getting helmers will encourage me into filling them up as quick as I can manage and getting more and more of them, basically until we are like using them in place of bed frames for our mattresses, under sofa cushions in place of sitting furniture, and as coffee/side/bedside/and dining table substitutes, with every drawer in them filled to over flowing with nail polish bottles!!! 😆🤣😂

That’s insane the helmers are $80. My first one was $40 and I went to go see if they were still around and were $80 plus ikea wanted another $100 to ship to where I am now.
My collection is equal to 2 of those drawers. My husbands is about 1 and 1/4 drawers but it's hard to say because he uses weird thick dividers and stores them in "groups" rather than rows.
I love organizing my polishes. I have them digitally sorted into seasons, since I'm a seasonal wearer and they are stored in color order.
I HATED putting together my first Helmer! It took over a month. Part of the problem was of course the TERRIBLE instructions, but also one of the side panels was bent/slightly damaged. I got in touch with IKEA about getting a new piece. They kept saying they would send it. After a month of this they finally said it was a mistake and they couldn't, I would have to take it to a store. I ordered online because the store is too far away. They have me a $10 credit which I put towards another Helmer.😆
I found some fantastic instructions online. Now, I can put a Helmer together in less than 30 minutes!
Could you provide a link to the online instructions you found? I've looked at the ones IKEA provides & I'm utterly shocked at how lacking they seem...it's one of the main things keeping me from buying a Helmer, which I desperately need. Thanks in advance!!🙂
Every couple of months the Helmers have been put on sale, but its usually just one color. I don't care I just get the cheapest one. I have 3 different colors. My last Helmer was on sale for $50.
I love when you organize your polishes, is so satisfying to me. When I gotta do it tho I kinda be like whyyy after a while. I don't have IKEA Helmers bit I have a big drawer, they aren't fill yet and I have an empty drawer still

That’s a brilliant idea idk why I haven’t thought of that “leaving a couple of empty rows open” I too organize by brand in alphabetical order but not color order that’s too tedious for me I don’t have the attention span for that
Save about $100 for your next Helmer. 😂 I have an Alex9 and unfortunately after about a year it didn't hold up well to the amount of polishes I put in the drawers. Wish I had Helmers instead.
I always wondered where everyone got these “helmers” to store their polish. No one ever said they were from IKEA!

As someone who bought their first Helmer pre-assembled from the scratch and dent area, I was really surprised to see how they're assembled? Putting the handles on first feels like a hot tip for an adult man with adult man hands like me. Will keep in mind when I get my next one! 😂 thanks for sharing!
Off topic, but I'm so curious how you keep track of your budget. I'm betting you have a spreadsheet. I recently created a spreadsheet tracking my spending for the year to date. But I'm curious how you keep track of how your spending matches your budget. If you have a master blank sheet of your spreadsheet (that I'm still betting you have) will you share it? Also, what did you pick for Hobonichi? I got the starry night weeks with the cat on the front, a pencil board, a liberty tote bag, and stuff for my niece. :)

I just built and organized my second Melmer and it was so fun to look at all the Polish I have! I just started setting up my Halloween/October rack! Plus I get to see what I have so the next time I shop I can decide if what I want is different enough or not!…. “Sure Jan…” I say to myself 🫣😂🤣

This was inspirational. I have boxes of unconstructed Helmers sitting here and dreading putting them together (I have fibro). But your enthusiasm for organization inspires me to approach it differently; not as a chore but as a pleasant experience. It will be nice to see my collection again, most of which is sitting in stacked boxes lol.
It's fun to sort through what you have and be reminded! And sometimes I go into it knowing it may take a couple days or even a week but doing a little here and a little there sometimes is great too!

Totally not saying this is going to happen to you buuut I told myself 4 was my max and now I’m at 16 🤦🏿♀️ Pro tip: you can stack helmers. I have 12 of mine stacked (so 6 on the floor and 6 on top)

@@MediocreManis I was a little unsure on how stable they would be stacked (my floor is uneven). But my husband got everything leveled so once I started adding polishes to the top stack, they’re stable enough that they don’t wobble or anything!

I just recently got my first 2 helmers. My mom offered to build them and it made her so mad lol I was surprised at how they are assembled, very odd and interesting lol 6 helmers blows my mind!

Yeah, they were $39.99 before (at least when I got my last one in Jan, 2022) and they DOUBLED in price! I will never pay $80 for a helmer, that's ridiculous!

I love organizing as well! Also have OCD, so I find it soothing. I need to do some reorganizing, since I’m not particularly happy with how I have some brands sorted. It’s basically a constant work in progress. 😅
Realizing this is gonna be me in the near future lmao, I’m literally gonna get my fourth and “final” helmer next month for my birthday 😅🙈 and I’m already stressing about making it fit. I broke 4 nails putting my 2nd helmet together when I had to take apart when I realized it was backwards. My 1st helmer I had no issues with.
My collection size rule is that every polish must be worn at least once per year. I’ve been rating them this year and I’ll do a bit of a purge at the end of the year…that will partly be so I can pick up a few new ones next year, partly to get rid of ones I don’t like (e.g., I did have color pass this year and definitely have some that are not in my wheelhouse), and…partly because I don’t want to change polish as often next year in order to wear everything lol.
For anyone thinking of how to game the rules, I also only allow myself one big skittles mani per month 😅
Oi on the quality front! Shrinkflation, quality decline…everything costs more and delivers less. I just had a granola bar and the wrapper is the same size, but Nature Valley must think we don’t notice that the granola bar inside the wrapper is now about an inch shorter.
So it's my birthday today I'm a fellow Virgo. I made my husband buy me nail polish and my sister also bough me some ilnp. I have filled my desk drawers and a wall shelf and am fighting the urge to buy a helmer. This was a great video though, i know i would love having helmer storage.

How many polishes fit in one Helmer?
I’ve found personally that about 100 fit in a drawer if you fill it completely, depending on the bottle size. 104 Holo Tacos fit in one drawer perfectly with their boxes, but most brands don’t fit as well with zero wiggle room. There are six drawers so around 600 total.
@@laurelloaf oh wow, thank you. I have a little over 200 polishes now, currently in 4 display racks )with some overflow) so I would only fill 2 1/4 drawers. So I would have a lot of "room to grow" which is rather terrifying. But I think the Helmer is a more compact and tidy look with everything put away and it keeps light out.
@@lestranged Yeah that was about how big my collection was for a long time, and it was nice because then I had a drawer for tools, base/top coats, acetone, etc. and I could keep everything together. I've unfortunately taken "room to grow" to heart the past couple years and might need a third Helmer soon 😬 But the good thing is that the drawers are a manageable size (I can pick one up and bring it over my desk when it's full) and since it's all one piece, you never have to worry about the bottom breaking which I know happens a lot with the Alex drawers and nail polish. Definitely good to keep everything out of the light, and you could still keep a seasonal rack on your desk if you want!

I think for me on average I can get 500+ but it all depends on the bottles.
