A civilization is divided into factions and the people after a certain age have to give this test to know which factions the belong to because each faction have a common strength and trait, for example their is this Dauntless faction where people who show signs of fearlessness go. They have to train in combat and dangerous acts. These people are sort of the army of the civilization. They have to fight for the people when it requires.. And they strictly have to stay and follow the rules of the faction they belong to. But some people show signs of having dominant traits and strengths of more than one faction. These people are called divergent and they are seen as dangerous to the civilization. So the whole story of the series is about how these divergents and some more people who don't like this faction system rebel against the authority. Ps. Those who don't follow the faction system or in general the rules of the civilization are left to fend for themselves and even killed. Ps. It's dystopia so fending for yourself is even harder than today's homelessness.
