Chris, you are the biggest reason that I am 15 months in to my firewood adventure and I am already using 4 out of 5 of these methods to save time. The only holdout for me is buying logs because I am not doing enough volume for it to make sense... yet. I've said it before but you flattened the learning curve so much for me, it is hard to express how much I appreciate all the information you share. You deserve anything that comes your way as a result of helping so many people. -Stace GNI
Thanks for sharing all the wisdom you have gained over the years. Have been thinking about buying logs because the older I get the slower I am at getting firewood out of the forest but I do enjoy doing it with the dogs.Getting to be the time of year where I seem to reflexively work faster. Always enjoy your videos with my morning coffee.
I'll never forget first time I went from a old55 rancher to a 592, lol but number six is what counts, lol,I don't have helpers much in firewood ,but do in other aspects, invaluable ,thanks Chris
great advice Chris. I've watched the increase from production in your old wood yard to where you are now. You've increased production by a lot. Its always good to see friends stop by and give you a helping hand. thanks for posting.
Hi, great vid. I just thoght to say, that you can probably find star shaped edges so that instead of only splitting the log in two, and then repat until suitable firewood is achieved, it takes care of it in one go. BTW, beware of overdeforestation with all this fantastic equippmen that is rapidly becoming available at relatively affordable prices. Save some productive forest related fun for future generations too!
It’s good advice Chris, especially what you can handle weight wise. 60cc is my limit usually a smaller saw, we’re getting old Chris. So keep on cutting
This video is perfect, your opinions are spot on, You and Joe Ohio Wood Burner got me into this job, the only thing I haven’t done yet is getting a dump trailer! It is next on my list! Thanks Chris
Thank you Chris for your advice, we have been growing out family business from watching your experience. But there is one thing where we are one small step ahead - dump insert. We love our dumperdogg, there are other brands or maybe a small dump truck. We are in city and trailers are sometimes hard to maneuver
Great video and I have applied all of these to my business as it has grown over the years. I would add #6 find a year round outlet to generate steady income such as bundles or a restaurant.
G’morning Chris. Thanks for the info! I miss the days of watching you stack for HOURS in time lapse. Daughter used to say “he works so fast!” GoodNightIrene
@@InTheWoodyard sure wish I had the wood processing that you have. Just running the ole slow log splitter. I enjoy bucking my own wood, it’s great exercise. Stay warm everyone.
For you pros production is vital. Butt, many of us heat 99 44/100 % with self harvested firewood. Here in Downeast Maine with a back 40 woodlot of 60a. , the plan is for 2-3 years of seasoned wood. Last winter with no snow, but temps below 32 and wet from Nov through April, the two Jotuls used close to 8 Maine cords. Snow insulates. We stack by season ( shoulder and winter), and by species ( low BTUs for shoulder months Paper Birch, Red Maple, spruce/fir; and higher BTU wood such as Beech, Ash, Locust for winter...no Oak ). Though I have the space, I do like and even love my stacks. It is known that I will step out to either admire them, or at times snort the varied species' perfume. Different strokes Chris. You do a super job. JMNSHO
One lil detail that has a huge effect that was not mentioned but you do……..sharp chain and learning to sharpen chains. Whinny saws are fine if the chain is sharp especially when your a smaller operation.
I split wood people already have in their yards. I charge extra for stacking it's great. Also i have the same trailer it is phenomenal Also also. Anyone looking for the best bang for your buck splitter, get a super split. Cheap, simple, very light, and incredibly fast. Like over a cord an hour under the right circumstances. For 2500 if you find one used
I would add sharpening to the list of time savers. Learning to sharpen and doing it frequently will save a bunch of time. We have all been there with only a few more cuts to make and chain is dull how painful it is to make those few cuts. Lean to sharpen and do it frequently.
I don't remember you offering it in prior vids, What's you current wood yard area ? 5 acres ? 7 acres ? 10 ? Including the storage sheds, bins, concrete pad, shard / chip pile., parking.
Hi Chris. Your wood drys fast probably because the pile heats up. My shed has a clear plastic roof and if I keep the door shut the wood heats up and the shed is still warm in the morning. I also dry wood in mini greenhouses and then vent during the night
I normally don't sell big quantities to heating folks, but I had a new guy order 5 face cord. Instead of stacking all in my trailer, I rented a dumper for $80... ended up it was a 12' instead of 14' like I thought it was and didn't have sideboards so I ended up stacking 4 out of 5 but unloading sure was easier.
The box store splitters can have a 11-12sec cycle-time, but with the amount of use you put it through, it ran hot many times and slowed down from the heat wear and tear on the internal parts. Heat is the enemy of box store splitters.
If you step up to a 3/4 or one-ton truck and get the 14k trailer, you'll have to have a CDL. I'd love to have a dump trailer, but my sales volume isn't high enough to warrant the expense. Having the right size chainsaw for the logs on hand saves time. Also, cutting logs in the 10-16in range are optimum for overall production in my experience.
If you are installing a new stove or boiler try to buy the largest fire box you can because the fewer bucks the more wood you are left and the less it uses chainsaw fuel and sharpenings.

Chris I was wondering if you could possibly make a video on how you construct your crates to put your loose wood in I understand the floor that's unless you screw all them together but how do you put the sides up do you have a video on that I don't wanna search through 10,000 videos to see it if it's not there thank you

Good video and advice at the tree company we sold hard wood and mixed wood split and put on ground had a supply to last all year it was seasoned and when running low people bought right off splitter but been in business for over 50years selling wood and a tree company so wood never cost anything good making contact with you again on are splitters have convoror belts on like three of them and the processor has one two but add another one for more volume times running out to get your supply built up we would split all summer and run the processor about 5/6 times plus people splitting made it through and heated the shop and office a big shop I'm still recovering from open heart surgery said be awhile like watching you brings back memories maybe one day I can get back to selling wood must be alright customer miss me and ask when coming back even left cards for me thanks again for your knowledge know some but a refresher course never hurts and you are one hell of a salesman on anything. Just the way you are down to earth and tell people the way they can understand it thanks again for all you do 15:53
Simple as mud, all that is needed is wire, twice around per wrap, repeat 4 times roughly evenly spaced either standing the wall pallet vertically or horizontally to the floor pallet and on the or near the center of the wall to floor pallets add a wire connecting the wall pallet runner board to the floor pallets center board runner. Strong and secure. You can also add, which Chris has on the long wall runs, a wire connecting the walls together, this can be loose as the wood will push against it and the wire helps keep the wall from having a blow out. Hope this helps, easier to draw it out than type it all out. 👍🏻
In my opinion you should say if it works in your area to pile it not stack because i have tried it and know others that tried it and got moldy had to through away a bunch because wont burn in the house. So in long run way more time and expense.

Husk 3120 weigh's 22 pounds without the bar and chain and I'm guessing that's dry. Add the bar, oil, and chain.... at least 25 pounds. Far more than I can handle.
For the task at hand smaller wood smaller saw, rough bracketing under 12"-50cc 12-24"-70cc over 24"-90cc. If felling limbing and bucking with one saw still hard to beat a 70cc saw.
