Thank you for this lesson. It helped clarify for me the meaning of what Paul wrote in 1:24 - afflictions of Christ - not redemptive sufferings, but ministerial sufferings. Also the meaning of the words in 2:6 - have received - meaning doctrines regarding the person and the work of Jesus Christ. I continue to pray for blessings on the translation work of Enduring Word.
I was a Catholic for many years and a nun for 7. My understanding of the aesthetic life is, in fact, how you describe Paul's beautiful purpose in his suffering. Cloistered religious, both men and women, offer their lives in prayer and sacrifice for a lost and dying world. It is as far from self-motivated as you can get.
