After the 2011 earthquakes, they should have put in a railway reservation branching up Colombo St, to the bus interchange and reserved space for a train/tram station.

I would suggest the light rail going from the new stadium, to the airport, passing the bus interchange, hospital, Riccarton, University and then up to the airport. Connects a lot of major destinations.

Christchurch in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was literally built around the SIMT mainline. The mainline is still in 1km proximity to about half of the city.
The problem with urban railway in Christchurch was the old terminus at Moorhouse avenue. While it was fine enough for the first half of the 20th century; as the usage of Automobiles grew and traffic increased; Moorhouse avenue became widened and it isolated the station from the town centre.
What Christchurch needs is a new train terminus north of Moorhouse avenue and closer to the town centre. Somewhere close to the big bus interchange (the two could be integrated). Then the old stations from yesteryear could be reinstated, and multiple units could be run along the mainline. Imagine how many commuters from Rolleston, Rangiora, etc that could take off of the roads.

@Unknown entity Reinstating that railway line would mean compulsory acquisition of a lot of private property. So the sort of money they’d need would probably cover also something like a viaduct over or tunnel under the motorway

The biggest problem with heavy rail is that doesn't catch the two biggest commercial hub in the city, CBD and Riccarton. In both cases the stations are positioned too far south for people to use it conveniently.

You would also need a significant residential population located around the station and to make this viable you would need to zone to densify more around the stations creating Transit Orientated Developments.

I took my two little kids on the ferry and train from Wellington to Christchurch to visit my Mum who lived in ChCh. One of the kids wasnt yet walking. By the time we got back to Wellington I had PTSD. That was 40 something years ago and I still suffer with PTSD from that trip.😂

Yeah, I was looking at the bus ridership stats in CHCH, laughable.

      @@DarrylTalks // Yeah, but’s that’s because it’s the bus.

@@DarrylTalks When I was woking I'd sometimes stay with my folks in Mt Pleasant (hill suburb) and use the bus to get to the office (out near the airport) and buses seemed strictly for school kids, people on low incomes or weirdos. CHCH people refer to busses as "looser cruisers" .The trip to the Office would have been around 30mins if I had access to a car but 1.5 hours by bus with a 20m walk. To be honest unless there was no parking where I wanted to go in CHCH I wouldn't bother with PT .

That's right, that's why I was trying to say, that I will always take the train from the airport to the city, when I am on holiday, if possible. Also I have actively chosen places to live, based on the public transport infrastructure. A train ride is a more dependable and comfortable ride than a bus.
