Will East and West Facing Solar Panels work in the UK? February 2023 Update

  • Welcome to the latest video in a series about our solar panel and battery installation in the south east of the UK.
Now that our Batteries are now working again - how much will we save on our Electricity Bill for February? And how has the system performance improved with them now worked as designed?

Interesting video, I have a 9.6kW system with 17.6kW of battery being installed next week, we are East West as well. I went for microinverters to get better efficiency from the panels, will be fascinating to see what we get through the next year then I will decide if we could use more panels.

I to am east west,,, and using a 5kw battery.. I have a samll bungallow and am now as of this last 6 weeks runnin totally of solar.. My one upset is my Utilitys(Octopus) standing charge,, I resent it ,, it costs me about £150 a year...and would rather have that money to cover the cost of heat over the winter months,,I,m looking at pre paid energy without standing charge........

Hi could you please tell me how you fixed the communication problem with the pylontech batteries not talking to the solis inverter, as I am also having problems with my new solis hybrid inverter not talking to my older pylontech batteries !! Ie can com fail !! Regards Mark

Hello, I have a small solar PV and battery set up. Solis 5G Invrter,6 x Trina 385W and 5 x US2000C Pylontech batteries. Have you checked the output of your panels? On the 19/03/23 my panels were producing 2.601kW. If you work this out its 433W per panel or 12.5% above 385W specified. I queried this with my installer and apparently the 385W is the minimum in test conditions. So your panels may be producing more than you expect.

Thank's Michael. That's good to know about the minimum. I've not had a chance to look at the average output per panel - will have to take a look the next time we have a decent sunshine day.

Hi, very interesting. How are you managing to have self use so high at over 50% of yield? Are you in all day? I only manage 10% self use and 50% to Battery thus exporting 40% on similar yield and usage. Thanks

Thank's Laurence! There is pretty much someone in the house all day - I work from home - so unless I'm travelling with work I'm in my home office Monday to Friday!

Hi, I am currently looking at getting solar, it won’t be till around Jan 24 as we already have a few projects this year. I’m in Lincolnshire, same as you with a E/W roof, looking at a 17 panel set up, 10.4kw batteries. My annual usage is quite low, 4000kwh about 11kwh per day. You seem to have high power usage, what’s your annual usage? Do you have an EV that causes it to be high?

Thank's for your comment! Our annual usage is in the region of about 5,500 to 6,000 kWh per year, but we have 3 adults and a teenager in the house. Plus I work from home full time and my wife works part time. So there is always someone at home.
I don't run an EV as I can't justify the cost of having one sat on the drive 80/90% of the time.

Thanks for replying; I work from home too 3 days a week, wife at home 5 out of 7 days and a 7year old. No EV either.
We actually just gave the fish tank away today as it pulls 600-1000kwh per year, so I just reduced my consumption from 4000 to about 3400 in a single swoop!
I am looking in to Givenergy, but looks like I will have to have a 8kw battery as the 2x5 kw batteries I was looking at were only 80% discharge rather than the 8kw being 100% but that’s fine as my consumption is now about 8kw /9kw on average per day after ditching the fish tank.

Hi ...I too am in Lincs,,, Woodhall spa,, and yes E/W my useage is alot lower then yours ,but when I get my new system working I intend to use alot my SOLAR energy.. I have no EV.. With the added system working I will have 20 kw of battery (actually I think it will be about 15kw) As I have just retired I want an excess of energy as I get older (ie not be affraid to put on the heating).. I am very pleased the way my first solaredge works ,but far from happy with the amount of control I have over it,,,,anyway good luck with your new install.

Thanks for replying, we are in Spalding. Practically cousins 😂. I’m flip flopping a lot between 20 x panels only and 16 panels and battery. Can’t make my mind up. Think we will go for panels only and leave to option for a small, maybe 5kw battery later on. I work from home so will use a lot in the day.

@@KelpieKev All I can say is with battery,I am now using no grid ellecy (none),, just with solar you have to manage your life around the fact of no free energy after 4/5pm,, if you can do that it will work for you..Spalding ,,Before retirement I use to thrash passed Spalding at 1 am on the way home from Shit city(London) once a week,,Thank God thats over!!!

Hi Rob. It was a firmware update and a reinstallation of the batteries my our implementer.
