    I'm a professional bookbinder, and I've been making traditional books and "Artist Books" for over 6 years, and this video is the most easy-to-understand, straight-forward instruction I've ever seen on how to sew a headband. Well done!

    Hi Chezlin, I am an amateur bookbinder and found your method of sewing head and tailbands most useful. I used to sew the conventional method which did not include gluing the bands to the top and bottom, and it was so much more difficult trying to hold the pieces of cord in place. This method overcomes that without depreciating the conventional bookbinding methods.
    Many thanks
    Colin

    wait holy crap I think I finally understand this! I've made two dozen books in the past year but all with glued headbands because I was just too intimidated to sew right on. But I'm absolutely going to try this on my next text block! The tissue holding the cord in place is also such a good idea. Thank you so much!

    Great video! Love the idea. I've linked it many times :)
    Going forward, I'm only going to use fabric instead of the paper. I found it to be too pulpy, and eventually breaks down despite the glue, and delaminates over time.

    is there a way to do this without sewing into the end pages of the text block or into the holes of the signatures? i don't like the fact then when i open the book on that page I'm gonna clearly see the strand of embroidery floss on the top and bottom of the page.

      it also provides structural support for books that are vertically shelved tightly. this way, when you take it out, the pressure is more on the text block and not the cover.

    Clever but unnecessarily complicated! Just stick string to fabric with double sided tape. Fold over tightly. Cut to width (of spine) x one inch long, and stick to spine of text block. It takes one minute max.

    How can I add a charm loop to my headband if my book is already assembled? I'd hate to start all over, but I'd love to add a loop to attach charms and bookmark ribbons.

    • @spirited154
      @spirited154 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bookmark ribbons would be attached to the textblock itself and shouldn't interfere with the headband. The charms, you might be to split the embroidery thread into a smaller number of skeins (each piece of embroidery thread has 6 of these skeins - individual threads) say 2, and wrap the charm around existing threads but honestly, this isn't something I've attempted, so I can't say for sure.

    Very nice video, but why did you speed it up to super-fast-forward right at the crucial moment of actually showing the stitching progressing? In all respect, that would have been very nice to see in progress :-)

    • @chezlin
      @chezlin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! I'm sorry! I showed two stitches at normal speed (well, three technically, cuz I showed how to do the special stitch too) and assumed that was enough to get the jist, but rewatching it now, I probably could have done a few more stitches at the normal speed... I just didn't want the video to get super tedious, haha 😅
      I do actually have footage of me sewing a few more stitches at normal speed, but it's on my instagram. If you're curious, here's the link to it: instagram.com/p/BMWvkzsjzuy/ There's no speaking in it though, it's strictly just me sewing the headband set to music~
