I'm SO excited to (FINALLY!!) watch these vlogs because I haven't fully entered my romance novel journey, but I'm hoping to live vicariously through you and maybe you'll talk through stuff that can help me. I've noticed, for me, my biggest experiences with romance stories have always been fanfiction or a fantasy or YA book with romance in it. So I think I need a lot of those elements from fanfiction or fantasy/fantasy YA/general YA included to really feel like I'm vibing with the romance. I LOVED all the discussions in here! Kayla, first of all - love this era for you and I hope you have enjoyed reading romance! As someone who's been reading the genre since she was 10 (thanks Grandma! ( it was closed door)), a few things:
- Most romances are about the journey to the couple being together instead of them being together. You generally get the epilogue or a chapter or two of the couple together at the end and then if there’s a series with a new couple in the next book, you get to see the first couple thriving and living their HEA - I do not listen to romance via audio because of second-hand embarrassment re: the spice so you’re so brave doing via SPEAKER
Kayla, you’re probably already done with this whole series. But you seriously need to read Take a Hint, Dani Brown. It’s amazing and the audiobook is 🔥🔥

what you mention about sex scenes following sad moments really resonates - I've just read a book where the sex scenes almost exclusively followed angry or sad scenes - even the grief of losing a loved one - and I actually find it weird. Maybe there are people out there who need that sort of release in those moments but I couldn't think of anything worse whilst in the depths of grief... :) I love the variety of content you put out
In terms of endings, it's a beat thing. From someone in the industry: There's a formula that typically has to be followed, that publishers are looking for, for it to be considered a romance. This includes the third act conflict, or the dark moment, and then HEA/HFN with a love confession and then an epilogue that's a glimpse into the future! So that same ending is pretty much in every novel because for it to be shelved or sold as a romance, it has to have it. There's debates on this happening right now...but nothing's changed so far. That being said, this pattern is a huge reason that a lot of people love romance novels...the reliability...and it ends before things get maybe more serious.

It’s so interesting to me that you want to see the couples happy together in the book for awhile. I would rather fill the book with tension and angst and end it when they finally get together. I like messy!! Just goes to show that romances are so widespread and we all have different tastes!!
