Great video. Absolutely captures the differences I've found between hybrids and driving irons. As we are heading into winter, it is hybrid all the way for me, but come the spring, I get my driving iron out and start smashing those beautiful, piercing long irons (as well as fats, shanks, snap hooks etc!)

Can y'all explain why the summer for the long iron and winter for the hybrid?

I like how you break down this dilemma.
I tend to prefer to use a driving iron rather than a hybrid, just because i feel more confident looking down at an "iron-ish" club rather than a "wood-ish" one.
Using Arccos, I have gapped these driving irons into my bag.
My woods are now: Driver Callaway Epic Max (9.5 degrees - 216m) and 5 Wood Callaway Epic Max (18 degrees 176m).
    I am also gaming the Taylormade Stealth DHY 3 (162m) & DHY 4 - 155m) Hybrid/Driving Irons.
Note: these are real-world distances from my Arccos system, not from Doppler Radar devices.

Dude well said! For me it's the cobra tec hybrids great clubs. In the summer when it's hot and I have a little better flexibility I will go for the long irons. But like you said it's not the perfect choice, you just have to play and see. But as I'm getting older the reliability of strike of the hybrid is reassuring and my go to.

I personally love my driving iron. I use it on shorter tight par 4's. Plus it's absolutely the club to hit a stinger off the tee when I need to control a low shot. BUT - I also have a 7 wood. So in wetter conditions like this last month, 7 wood is in the bag and the driving iron is sitting at home in the warmth sipping a cup of coffee.

Some things that I rarely see mentioned, my bad miss is a high toe & irons have material there where as hybrids are easier to sky.
The equivalent hybrid will have a longer shaft so I find it slightly harder to control.
We are told to get fitted, my fitting is 2º upright 0.5" longer but hybrids are rarely lie adjustable and if they are it tends to be flatter only.
One advantage of a hybrid is lack of hosel intruding into the face if you strike towards the heel.
I tend to hit irons high anyway, perhaps Im an 'outlier'.
I also find roll and bulge can hurt my shots, with irons I feel its a truer strike.
I play irons only and would advise any new player to avoid woods and driver at 1st.

    • @dortanthoney
      @dortanthoney 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

This. I too wish that these types of videos would address face height and misses up and down the face. I hit a wood/hybrid fine, but I feel like the margin for error of strike is so much less up and down the face vs a driving iron. Sure, if one catches the ball a groove or two low the hybrid will come out higher. But, if impact is high on the face the hybrid will pop up, whereas the iron will get you more down range. I feel like the iron face height might be better too for speed retention regarding a variable thickness face, since there is more face area down at the ball. So the MOI advantage of the hybrid may not help as much as one might think.
And Mark is right when he says horses for courses. My course has few long approaches. So I prefer the left/right accuracy of an iron over the front/back accuracy of a hybrid.

I have the Ping g425 3H at 18 degrees, TM stealth 2 HD 4 hybrid 23 degree, ping g430 5 hybrid 27 degree, and ping g430 6 hybrid 31.5 degree. I just got the hybrids and they are great. I have to learn my distances. Example my 6H at 30 degrees avg was 195 today shots between 188-205. That’s to far for a 6 hybrid as my 7i only goes 150 to much of a gap.
I adjusted my hybrids up in loft to drop some distance to make better gapping.

Nice video Mark. Hybrids to me are easier to hit , more forgiving. Testing in a studio with trackman feeds you good information, however when you’re on the course and your stance is off up or down, or your off the fairway your lower numbered irons may not be the good choice, especially if you’re a senior. Yes, I know what your thinking, your talking off the tee, I still like the hybrids for control. Love you brother!

How things have changed. At one time I carried a 1,2,3 and 4 irons (and 5-sw) plus 2 wood and 4 wood. I now have driver, 3, 5, 7 and 9 woods plus 5-Sw including a gap wedge. Mind you I’m also 35 years older but the equipment has certainly changed for the better. However I’ve tried and failed with hybrids. Can’t get my swing right. My old drivers are tiny in comparison.

Thanks Mark. Great explanation. I use irons up to 6 and then go 4, 5 hybrid. I have been thinking of getting a Utility Iron for a fairway finder and when I need to keep the ball low under a tree or into the wind. I do have a gap between my 6i and 5H. Would you suggest adding a 5i or 3/4 utility iron (maybe more versatile)? I do tend to use the loft of the club like you mentioned. Miss is usually off the bottom of the face. Thx, Ric

Maybe you should’ve kept 1 or 2 even though they’re a little tricky to hit, they can be fun even if you hit ‘em right 50% of time. In windy conditions, you can stripe them on a low flight down the middle of the fairway

Common, I used to aswell. Some are very draw bias so that can cause issues, however I found my biggest issue was my swing was becoming very flat when hitting them, almost trying to use a driver swing and hitting up on it, this made that draw bias far harder to manage as my path/face was so off from my flatter swing, I now really focus on taking the club back steeper and I very rarely go past a baby draw now.

A lot of Pros tend to forget who they are talking to.
Mark is one of the worst in that regard.
No amateur over the age of 50 with an average Driver carry of 190 yards is capable of hitting ANY iron longer than a 7 iron with any kind of AUTHORITY or distance.(32' max).
This an age old axiom which has never changed and will never change.
At 48 I could carry 240 with my driver and hit a 4 iron 180.
At 55 my longest iron was a 6 iron, 150 yards.
At 61, my longest drive is 220. My 3 wood goes 180, my 7 iron goes 140.
    My PW goes 110.
My 6 iron has left the bag. Replaced with a 5 iron for shutting the face and hitting a grass cutter between the trees, the clubs only purpose to be in the bag.
My bag:- Driver, Wilson D100 custom, carry 200-220.
    Wilson D300 3 wood custom, carry 175-190.
Wilson Fybrid 5 wood, carry 165-180.
Knight 7 wood( American) carry 155-175. With an easy, baby 5 yard fade. Love this club.
SRIXON irons. I403ad, forged heads, stiff graphite shafts, 4gram lead on back of each iron. Amazing feel, 7-pw +5 I.
    PW 110, 9i 120, 8i 130, 7i 140, 5i 150?.
    Mizuno Raw wedges. 50= 100, 54= 90, 58=80.
The rusty finish on the Mix wedges and the amazing weight distribution on the SRIXON irons is golf, but not as I have EVER known it.
Feel and forgiveness and distance consistency.
After 20 years of searching I finally built MY perfect set.
I've gone from average 15-18 over par, to average 10 over par. Same swing, just better" older" clubs.
Full set in my bag cost me approx £300.!! All second hand, but PERFECT for me, finally!!!
