You have a very special gift for capturing our beautiful Earth with your amazing photography. Those colors are breathtaking! You truly are an artist. Thanks for sharing your unique vision & places we may never otherwise have a chance to see. Thanks for brightening my day! Take care & God bless.
That shot looking down the canyon wash was beautiful, really captured the range of colors. Seems like Zion is approaching fast. I imagine I'll have an interesting time finding my groove again too, especially since I might be there alone this year lol. Watching these videos to get some inspiration for this year!
I'm really digging that last shot with the creek and the leaves. I was hoping for something along those lines when I visited that side of the park. Maybe next time! Solid work as always, and I look forward to the next installment.
Thanks Ben! I've always wanted a reflection shot in water but kept coming up empty over the years. Kolob I believe has a lot of potential for exploration; I look forward to hiking it more in the future!
I understand about creative burnout, and questioning everything. In the end, we always return to what we love. Great work, Alan, glad to see you back out here shooting. Merry Christmas!
Thanks Monty, I hope you had a great Christmas! I agree with you, we do always return to what we love. Once I got back behind the camera, it was such a great feeling!
There are always ups and downs in photography. For me it's just a hobby and whenever I don't feel like shooting I just leave it be for a few months. Usually there's something that gets me hooked again after some time off and I'll be as passionate as ever. If I have some doubts or lack of interest I just use my time for other stuff and maybe even get some new ideas leading back to photography in the process. By the way, Kolob Reservoir was an amazing place to camp when I visited Zion a few years ago! I arrived after dark and set up tent without seeing much but the next morning I woke up next to the lake, surrounded by bright yellow autumn colors. Really mindblowing, and the best thing is that I only went there by chance because everything else was too crowded!
Same for me, it is just a hobby. Sometimes I have to force myself to realize that I'm just doing this for fun! It is something I very much enjoy and I do want to produce quality content but in the end, it's something that brings me joy in my spare time.
Thanks for following along over the years! The reflection shot was one of my favorite from this trip. The colors are pretty intense but that's what Zion and Velvia can do sometimes! :)
Love both those shots. I get the questioning oneself bit...we moved home in late October and my 4x5 has been tucked away in the corner since, with me wondering if I will ever get a chance to use it again. That creative urge always finds its way back to us in the end though.
The good thing is that when you break out the camera again, it immediately comes back to you. Once I started composing images again, it's like I had never taken any time off!
@@AlanBrockImages That's reassuring! I find myself out walking the dog, seeing possible compositions...now gotta dig that ol' Sinar out and point it at some of them.
I hope you keep on shooting, Alan! That second photo was my favorite. I've watch you grow as a LF photographer and I have gained a lot of inspiration and knowledge from you. Also your arms have grown too! It makes me want to work out... a little... and that's saying a lot!
Definitely give working out a go...you won't regret it! Thanks for following along over the years and for your encouragement; it genuinely means a lot to me!! I'll keep shooting!
Please discuss your large format photography in more detail. I was an avid 4x5 photographer back in the 70's and 80's, basically giving it up because of a career move. I always thought I would get back into it, when along came digital. I still have all my equipment and could re-learn the skills, but I have lost contact with the color labs, no longer have a darkroom, and the photography world no longer seems to support film. Can you please speak to your image capture, material procurement/selection, and post-capture workflow in subsequent videos.
It's a Giottos ballhead. There's nothing special about it actually, but on that trip it was the only tripod head that I brought! Losing it would have meant losing the ability to attach any camera to a tripod!
@@AlanBrockImages Thanks. I am trying to get away from ball heads for large format. I have video heads and ball heads but feel that a proper pan/tilt head is the way to go, especially for the large and unwieldy Toyo 45D that I have. Then again, my Manfrotto ball heads are probably the right size for my 4X5 Crown and Speed Graphics. Thanks!
Large format camera? Pfft. You can't even upload your images via wi-fi and the lenses aren't image stabilized. Get with the times grandpa. *Sarcasm OFF*
Not a lot of flying in this video...1/10 stars.
Really enjoyed this video Alan and a mighty fine set of images at the end there. :-)
that shot with the water reflecting the sun at 6:50 looks quite lovely
Thanks!! Reflected light in Zion can be amazing!

It’s nice to see you smiling again my friend! 😀
Thanks!! It felt so good to be creating again. It was great to see you in Zion as well!

Wow 🤩 @11:50 super 👌
Thank you!
Amazing video and photos once again Alan!
Thanks, I appreciate that!!

Your trips are so amazing. Love your photographs. I really liked the reflections off the water. You do a great job.
Thanks for following along over the years! The reflection shot was one of my favorite from this trip. The colors are pretty intense but that's what Zion and Velvia can do sometimes! :)
I think that’s the first time I’ve watch your channel. I felt your sincerity through the content! Keep it up.
Thanks for watching!! Plenty more Zion content coming up!
Thanks for sharing Alan. It is always great to see how others photograph Zion. I found the colors more subdued this year.
Definitely more subdued that in 2018, but I don't know if anything will ever top that year! Still some decent color, but in more isolated pockets.
as always, excellent work!!!
Thanks!!

"even question my future as a photographer..." Sheeshh. Alan, your image of the fractured rock-slide is stunning.
Thanks Mike, I really appreciate that! I appreciate all of your comments and encouragement over the years as well!
Hey Alan, loved that final shot of the reflection as well as the penultimate shot of the slipped rock. Really nicely done video.
Thanks, I really appreciate that! Also appreciate the use of the word penultimate. Underutilized word in my opinion!!
I love the second image, Alan. I love the colours in it. I am still always amazed by how much detail there is in large format film.
Thanks!! That one was in some more subdued lighting, but over time I've grown to like that image.
Beautiful images Alan..Loved all 3 of them!
Thanks, I appreciate that!
That last image!!! Fantastic!!
Thanks!
I hope you keep on shooting, Alan! That second photo was my favorite. I've watch you grow as a LF photographer and I have gained a lot of inspiration and knowledge from you. Also your arms have grown too! It makes me want to work out... a little... and that's saying a lot!

Great insights into the Zion area, glad you enjoyed your trip 👍
Thanks for watching! Now that I've had time to reflect on it, it was a really satisfying trip.

Well, the first one to see. Keep shooting AB. Those colours were intense
Yeah, the reflection in particular was pretty wild!
Really liked the reflection in water!
Thanks! That was one of my favorites from this trip!
It seems like wherever your video camera points there’s awesome color.
It's pretty easy to spot amazing color in Zion that time of year!
I really like the colors in the last photo.
Thanks! They were pretty intense on film, but that's what reflected light and Velvia can do!
You mentioned that the tripod you are using is the only one with a head that works for your LF camera. I’m curious what tripod head that is? Thanks!
It's a Giottos ballhead. There's nothing special about it actually, but on that trip it was the only tripod head that I brought! Losing it would have meant losing the ability to attach any camera to a tripod!

It’s mirrorless though...
@@AlanBrockImages Well, in that case it's okay.
