Jay Schroeder won his job back at the behest of Doug Williams due to his back injury during the Rams game, but Doug patiently waited his turn and won the starting job for good after Schroeder floundered against the Vikings in the seasons final game....And the rest was Superbowl History for my beloved Redskins!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember this game well. Washington hadn’t beaten the Giants in awhile.

I was at this game. A rainy afternoon into damp evening at RFK. The game was competitive as the 1986 and 1987 Super Bowl champs battled it out til the end. The Giants owned the first half but the Redskins fought back for a close win in the second half.

If my memory serves me right this was the Game that got Jay Schroeder his starting job back and he kept it until half between the start and end of the last game of the season

      Was it? That makes sense.

I believe so. Williams was the official starter on the depth chart but injured or inactive for some reason. Jay had another of his miracle comebacks and Gobbs made him the starter again. I was more of a Schroeder fan than a Williams fan due to youth and jays ability to come back from behind. But I still liked Doug and I am so glad the redskins grabbed him in 86.

I liked Williams plenty, but at the time the future at QB looked to be Jay Schroeder. He made some errors, but that was to be expected as a young player without much game experience. The guy looked the part of an excellent NFL QB, tall, athletic, and with a cannon for an arm. He threw a beautiful deep ball, doing so pretty much immediately after coming into the game when Theismann was injured. On top of that, the 'Skins winning percentage was very high with him behind center, especially early on. Going 12-4 and winning two playoff games in '86 is no small thing.
I think we all had high hopes for him at the time and thought he might be perfect for the Raiders when that trade went through. Unfortunately for Jay, he seemed to plateau and stop improving, leading to a mostly mediocre career the rest of the way.

Unfortunately, Jay Schroeder always had accuracy issues due to his lack of touch. He could throw the long ball, but he relied too heavily on his arm strength to get him out of bad situations. It doomed him to mediocrity. It turned out to be a blessing that he left, because Doug fizzled out in 88 and that gave ample room for Mark Rypien to have the seasons he had in 90 and 91. Rip was by no means great but in ‘91 he was almost impeccable.

That’s exactly how I remember it. I liked how jay could break tackles in the pocket and scramble to get the throw off. A lot of his accuracy issues were due to him struggling to make a play others could not even attempt. Such high hopes for him. He didn’t completely suck for the raiders either. He did get them to an AFC championship game. Schroeder won games, what else can a team ask for.

And yet another great comeback victory for the the great number 10 who won over 70% of his games. Most of the wins this season came at the hands of the great Jay Schroeder...... who got thrown under the bus in the playoffs!!!!!!

Lol, dude don't get me wrong I liked Schroeder, but he, Williams, and Rypien were basically the same quarterback: streaky passers with great deep ball ability. It was just a matter of going with the hot hand. I believe Gibbs got obsessed with the deep pass after we lost the '83 Super Bowl by way of Plunkett. We even signed a couple of speedy Raider receivers a year after. Only difference was Williams was ageing, so had Schroeder not pitched a bitch fit, he woulda eventually regained the reigns. Instead we went with Rypien, end of story. What isn't talked about much is the genius of Richie Pettibone, who's defense kept us in games while all three of the above mentioned were inconsistent and turnover prone...

I from what I understood is that the players didn't relate to Shroeder as a leader and was not popular amongst his team mates and that all loved Doug Williams 😊🤙🍺🏈

@@luisbohorquez7096 ..........he was a great leader and was 24-7 after Joe went down......his atitude did sour however after being benched in Detroit.........and afrer winning every regular season game we won in '87.....he gets benched for the playoffs........it was BULLSHIT!!!!!
