I made about 100 bricks from my wife's Amazon habit.
I chopped up the boxes into cubes with a paper cutter / guillotine.
I used a cement mixer at the end of a drill to mix the cardboard into a slurry and left overnight.
I then packed them into our conservatory over summer until they became rock solid.
They burn hot and slow cos they are compact.
But I used them all in last December.
And they produce a lot lot lot of ash.
I used the ash in the garden, mixed with the soil and all of a sudden the weed were growing hard and fast, there were ample earthworms.
I remember leaving the water in the bucket for a long time and over time it started smelling like Cider, and the yellow Jackets were very interested in that bucket.

In the late 1970s, it was more common to use a machine to roll newspaper up extra tight. I think one could just burn the paper in a stove with a limit of air so the paper doesn't burn too fast. We didn't bother because burning paper leaves too much ash compared to burning wood.

There is that as a downside, although we ourselves don't find it much of a problem so long as we use it in addition to wood rather than completely dropping the wood use to zero. So we use them to boost the wood or to add a shorter burning log in the hour before bed etc. Appreciate your feedback my friend :)

Fabulous Paul, you are awakening many memories as far as I can tell by the comments. Love the idea- not that it helps you any as we live in an apartment and have central heating. I may get my grandchildren on to this when I'm visiting next. Have a lovely Sunday. 👌🇳🇱🙋‍♀🇳🇿

It may make a great gift for grandchildren to make the logs for friends and neighbours with log burners perhaps. :)

Had one of those briquette makers in 1980. The only problem was the volume of papery ash in the fireplace every day.

Yes there is more ash than wood gives, although we don't find too much. We especially find they work in conjunction with wood, so for example at the end of the night when an extra wood would burn for too long we can pop a paper log on. Or we use it to give the wood a bit of a boost without it costing any more. Happy New Year my friend :)

@@MillionairePaulReviews I used to mix the coal dust and the scrapings from the coal bunker in with the paper, before we moved to a house with gas.

Do you reckon I'd still need to use water if I'm using coffee grounds instead?

    how fast do they burn?

      @MillionairePaulReviews  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

A good hour, it kinda depends how and where and with what etc. We make them for an indoor log burner with a door on it. At the end of the day every minute burnt is one less minute wevepaid for 👍

I did something similar in the 1970’s when newspapers were thick. I read an article in one of those off-the-grid almanacs about wetting pages of a newspaper and winding them around a broom handle to make fire logs. You let it dry for several weeks. It is essentially the same. I see an advantage to using the shredder because you can use all kinds of paper products. Back when there was no internet and the television only gave you two 30-minute snippets of news per day, everyone got a newspaper or two delivered DAILY. That constituted a lot of uniform paper dimensions for making logs. I’m showing my age.🫣

I shared a similar message. There were these gadgets that wound up the paper extra tight. I'm not sure why you could not simply control the air to keep the paper burning without it burning too fast. Maybe it was the binders put into paper, but a paper fire tends to leave lot more residue, while wood tends to push the carbon out of the flue. That was probably why one shreds and soaks the paper first.
