Thanks for watching our DIY Transformers costume video! So..... Bondo turned out to be a bit of a disaster (14:20). Please share your suggestions for a body fill to give this cardboard transformers costume a smooth finish?
@@Confused_Elio , This is made with cardboard and Styrofoam insulation. I am sure you could just make it only out of cardboard but wouldn't be able to get the nice shape. not sure if that answers your question. :)
I'm a 18 years old girl, and Yeah, yesterday I decided to start working on this, cause I'm a Transformers fan and Bumblebee is my Favorite, Maybe I don't have the money for all the materials here, but I'm trying to do it at my own way with this as a example, no matter what they can say of me! So... Go ahead and Do it if you have motivation as a Transformers fan!!!
For anyone attempting this, dont spray paint directly onto the foam. I used 2 coats of primer and even still it looks all bubbly and bumpy. Definitely go with a foam sealant step first like bondo or just go to contact paper. There might be something else you could use to make the foam less porous, but dont skip this tip and your car will turn out smooth.
Great point.. spraying direct to the foam will Def give a bubby rough look. I posted on another form and someone suggested mixing a fiber glass resin with the bondo to make it easier to work with. Going to try this on the next project.. maybe Bugatti Transformers?
thank you for sharing this step by step for the costume, you really save me,, my kid wants this for the halloween,, i hope i can accomplish doing this..
You got this. I know I missed a few things and haven't had a chance to buildna step by step manual. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll get back to you right away..
I’m a mom with no idea what I’m doing when it comes to building or being handy, but I’m going to attempt this for Halloween. Wish me luck! Lol. And definitely let us know if you get the pdf instructions written ☺️
Hey! So sorry for delayed response. Not sure if I will get the PDF out as I am struggling with time these days. If you have any questions I am happy to try and help the best I can.. One tip would be make the car a bit wider if possible.. it will make it look more realisic.. thats what ill be doing on the next one :).
Love it! The effort involved and design is inspiring. Pro tips with Bondo if I may; Apply more than you need, then use the rasp/surform to shape it, especially the high ridges, just when it's no longer soft but in a firm but tacky state, you have to be careful though. Usually after about 10 minutes. Don't leave bondo to fully harden before working it. You can sand it as soon as it stops clogging paper and well before it's fully hard. This will save you a lot of energy and time. My most valuable tip: When applying bondo, put loads on, then shape it with a clean blade. Clean your blade off each time you want to shape the bondo. It's life changing when you figure that one out.
Excellent Zero Days! Exactly the pro tip I was looking for, much appreciated. Hoping to tackle another one of these this summer, I'll be keeping these tips top of mind.
I would use a glossy contact paper, you can get any color under the sun. Its finicky stuff but if you can get it to lay right, it looks great, makes it more durable and water resistant and its light weight.
Appreciate this comment.. thanks! I've been meaning to repair the damage in this one and I think this glossy contact paper could work. Great idea, thanks.
Thanks for watching and glad you liked it. Not sure if you had a chance to watch the entire video but I did have some lessons learned. Let me know if you have any questions, happy to help.
So sorry for the late response. I don't remember, but can yake some measurements for you next time I'm home. Assuming a bit late as we passed Halloween.. 😞
I'm starting to like Transformers cause of a friend heheh, but Can I do this even if I'm a 18 years old girl? (For some would be weird lol) Bumblebee is my favorite (and my friend favorite character too) and I really want to make myself a cardboard costume of him 💛
Hey! Of course you can make this.. I want to make this for the adults next year so we can go out for Halloween as a Transformers family. If only I could find the time to make them
Awesome costume!! Great walk through as well!! Semi Pro Tip.. Be confident in yourself and don't insult yourself such as your voice. We all hate our voices and it took hundreds of videos for me to get used to my own voice lol. I personally think your voice is good for youtube and sounds ok to me. Keep on keeping on!!
Hi Amber! This has actually been on my mind laltley as a few people have asked me as we approach fall. I will try my best to have them available by end of August. I will let you know as soon as the link is available. If you are looking to get a head start and have any questions just respond to this comment. Excited you are going to tackle this project. Your child will love it.
Did you by chance ever get it figured out? I have already started the project but, am struggling with certain things that were left out from mentioning in the video. Really don’t want to guess it then blow rhetorical entire project
Hey! sorry for the delayed response.. Not really sure.. you could use cardboard only but you wont be able to get the rounded edges.. would still transform though. If I think of something I;ll let you know.. You let me know if you come up with something :)
You never mentioned those lines you made in the middle of the cardboard template. How did you get those measurements and how did you know where to cut for rear fender?
Hey Austin! Nice catch. I totally never got to that as I said I would. The lines in the middle are separating the hood, doors and rear fender. My measurements were. 12" for the front section, about 9.5" for the middle section and 12.5 " for the rear section. These measurements do not include the 1" tab that is used for glue. Keep in mind these are just suggested measurements. I would use a piece of cardboard to replicate how you want it to look and figure out the perfect dimensions to make it look realistic. If I do this again I would actually make the car about 1" wider. Hope this helps. Good luck on your transformers costume.
Thank you! Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to complete the PDF. I'm trying to have available for October 1st. If you have any questions before then, I am happy to help you out.
Few things… The frame. The tapered portion of the frame is 4”. So subtract that from the total length desired for your long sticks. The side tabs should be 2.5” long so they protrude 1”. The paint stick pieces flanking the coat hanger can’t be within 2 1/4” from the edge to allow the Velcro. The cardboard pieces need 1 1/4” added to the desired height for the 1” tabs and 1/4” bend allowance at the bottom. When cutting the foam do not template the wheel wells as they will be set 1 1/4” lower when the cardboard tabs are in use. I cut the foam with a hot wire cutter (way faster). Also be sure to have mirrored sides when using the spray adhesive. I’m only partially done… but these are the lessons from today. I’m sure there are more to come. Thanks!
Thanks Molly! I tried to capture everything but it was tough. Going to attempt another DIY Transformer here soon. Definitely lots of room for improvements
Hey, I would say take your time with sculpting the styrofoam and you won't need to use either.. won't be as good as a finish but the easi-fil is too brittle. I heard if you add some fiberglass resin to the bondo it's easier to work with, but takes longer to dry.
Starting this build and have a couple questions :) is there a certain dimension you use for where to cut the rear fender from the front? And certain dimensions of where to put the wheel wells or how big the wheels we're you made? Thanks!
Any paint primer will work or a combination paint (yellow) and primer. If you paint directly onto cardboard any acrylic paint will do. You may need to do several layers to desired color. If you go this route I suggest using mod podge a large jar more than 8oz 12:52 to seal the paint. Always by extra paint and sealer. Rather have extra than needing more.
Hey, I am super sorry, I have no idea and dont have this documented. I would say get your little human to go in this position and take a measurement from top of head to feet. give a couple inches on the back and a few up front and you should be good. hope this helps..
Hey! So sorry for the delayed response.. Excellent choice for your 5 year old.. I just checked my bill of materials and I didnt even keep track of that :(. If I am not mistaken I used 4 large mixing sticks for the frame. I only used the small mixing sticks to mark the rims. Go to Home Depot and they will give you as many as you say you need. usually the large sticks are behind the counter. I hope this helps. let me know if you have any other questions.
