  • This was a video request from "MainA/C Dude" who wanted to know how to bypass a thermostat on a window A/C. So in this video I show how to bypass thermostats in these A/C units. We use a EQK and a Kenmore as a model example.

    *So amazingly quiet and **Fastly.Cool** in my room! 42db is at a whisper level. I bought 2 and installed myself.Very sturdy bracket and easy to adjust to fit windows of different size. Absolutely fabulous units!!*

    Thank you SO MUCH! This was such a no brainer, I don't know why I didn't try it sooner. Your advice to check the wiring diagram was perfect because mine was a black wire. Before I was just remotely locating the thermostat "wire" but when it broke it from being flexed too much it turned out to be some kind of copper vacuum tube and then that forced my hand. The hardest part was fiddling out the control panel and wiggling it back in.

    I cut a hole in the 1978 RV and made it fit. Used higher grade insulation around the edge, but it works great. Plenty quiet for sleeping. Used my Dremel to cut the aluminum siding and jigsaw for the wood and insulation.

    Thanks for the great tip. I was wanting to use a small (about 4 x 7) utility room to cure homemade meats. I bought a small window unit to cool the room but I could never get it below 63. After watching this video and others it was clear that these units are governed. I already owned an external temperature control unit. The unit has its own power plug which goes into the wall - and the AC unit plugs into this plug.. On the other end is a thermostat and wire that feeds back to the control unit. The unit has a dial setting. I set it for 55. When the temp climbs above 55, my unit sends power to the AC unit and it starts to run. When the temp drops to 55, it shuts off the power to the AC unit and it stops. No concerns about the AC unit running until it freezes.

    • @cskye6529

      Yeah it's really irritating that they don't let you cool to below 63. I could have tried this but didn't until I watched his video.

    I have a 30 year old kenmore that in the last 2 days compressor goes on for 20 minutes then off for awhile then back on. Evaporator only cool and wet for lower 2 inches. This started after cleaning lots of dust off evaporator fins (may have nudged thermostat wire in process). Tried cleaning thermostat wire and made sure here is clearance from evaporator. Did not work. Was going to try by-passing thermostat per your video, but the thermostat wire clip where is connect to the control panel is joined to another wire clip connector with a plastic clip (black wire...cannot see where it goes). This unit has 2 knobs and power saver option on control panel (off, fan, power saver, low, med and high settings). Any advice on either how to fix problem or by-pass thermostat. In the middle of heat wave and will likely take awhile to get a new AC. So need this to work and doubt if the compressor would ever cycle off anyways right now.

    A trouble here with a Split type A/C on indoor unit. Outdoor unit both fan and compressor motors working. Only trouble for indoor unit only runs for 48 seconds then shutdown automatically even at Low Fan Mode only. Similar trouble happens after restarting. Motor speed is working ok, swing motor working ok. Remote control works fine. It's YORK Model: HTEA180S-AAR. Power supply is ok and stable. No trouble with the mains or MCB. Indoor fan motor rated at 0.052Kw ; 0.24Amps.
    Pretty sure you've some good ideas or tips about it. Thanks

    Joshua, are you still replying to questions? I have a Roper window A/C knob base. I need to know how to put the wires back onto the main switch. When wires were removed, the switch was not marked (by color of the wire) where they go when putting wires back onto the switch from the A/C unit. It's an old unit (I think it may be a 1994 model) and I can't find a diagram to show where each wire goes. I have pictures of the wires and the main switch if you think you might be able to help.

    Let me ask you a Question
    I have a Digital 12,000 BTU FrigidAire AC and a 5,000 Frigiaire Both worked untill I had to take them outside and Clean out the Insides with Bleach and a Hose here's the situation for both They will both work if I Hold Power and Mode to turn them on I think it's some kind of test feature But eventually the Compressor turns off . Then if I turn them on normal compressor won't turn on unless I hold something very warm around the sensor probe. So since I know it has to be the Sensor probe I removed the Sensor which gives me A5 Error Code but also gives cold Air So I don't really care. But what would happen if I just cut the Sensor Probe off and just Splice the 2 leads esentially bypassing the Sensor or would that have the opposite effect?
    I am planning on getting a New probe in a few weeks but it's too hot to have to wait.
    Thanks

      If the unit kicks on but is not cooling it could be either the filter or something worse. If the filter is clean take the unit out of the chassis and check the condenser coil. If that is caked with dust clean it. If not slide the unit back in and take off the front grille. If you hear Freon moving through the pipes the unit may still be savable, if not or if you just hear a hiss then the Freon may have leaked out. If the Freon leaked out the unit is not worth saving unless it is a very old unit.

      thanks for the response.. the main problem is when its too hot it cant generate cold air .. i already clean the whole unit. when night its working smoothly and i noticed when day . the compressor working intermitent. i already change the thermostat with a new one. but still same problem so thats why i want to disabled the thersmostat so it will forced to worked the compresor.what seem to be the problem. thanks in advance

      You can do this. Or use a WiFi plug with some logic using another sensor, or use a purpose built thermostat that has an outlet on it. Bypassing it gives you the most options given the availability of mains voltage control devices today.

    • @MittyNuke1
      @MittyNuke1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do this , be careful to only use a mains voltage thermostat: many thermostats are designed for 24 volt AC/low voltage signal only. Best option for a basic thermostat at the point of use, after the internal thermostat is bypassed as shown in the video, is something like this: www.amazon.com/dp/B08HNHBC8P/
      Or this (I have this one): Lux WIN100 Automatic Heating & Cooling 5-2 Day Programmable Outlet Thermostat, Compatible with Portable A/C, Fans, and Space Heaters www.amazon.com/dp/B000E7NYY8/

      No, not unless it is low on charge or gets below 60 degrees in your house.

    • @MittyNuke1
      @MittyNuke1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shouldn’t freeze up like OP said, but if it freezes up when it’s not cold in the room, then the AC unit could have low refrigerant. You can recharge these window units, but in my experience it’s easier to get a “new” unit given how many people throw away “old” ACs after just a couple seasons. About to attempt a thermostat bypass on a free 8k btu window AC I picked up about a week ago… ty for this video.

    • @JoshuasRecordings
      @JoshuasRecordings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. Pretty much the same idea as what I did here. Just find the wire that runs to the circuit board and jump it to main power. As soon as you do that the compressor will run whenever the unit is plugged in.

    • @bobbiusshadow6985
      @bobbiusshadow6985 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can’t replace the AC’s thermostat, then just plug your bypassed-thermostat AC unit to an external climate controller (wired on cooling down, not heating up).
      Edit: as Chris said, the on/off switch will still work, it just isn’t hooked with the thermostat, which is a secondary on/off switch (switched by ambient temperature) on the same electrical line.
      [A climate controller is an external thermostat with both functions of cooling down (AC) OR heating up (heater). Easily available and cheap]

      Mine cycles, especially in the morning, and doesn't really cool enough for my room. Max cool might get it only 75 F in parts of the room, and it's not that big. The thermostats on these units are set wrong from the factory. Everyone has been in a car where you can get frozen out and then you turn it down... these stupid window ACs cycle when the case gets cool or due to age or not being ever properly set for an actual cool and dehumidified room. Short cycling should only happen on an AC that is too large for a room, but it can happen if the wimpy fan doesn't blow the air aloft well... but it's just a bad thermostat design for most of the ones I've seen.

    • @uruiamnot
      @uruiamnot 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, so I just bypassed my thermostat. It works fine this way. Mine couldn't be wire-swapped because of the design. I had to pull the wire going into the thermostat, make a small jumper wire out of 12 AWG copper, and connect it to the one going toward the compressor. So I just shorted around the thermostat, in other words.

    You DON'T need & most people don't want the crazy intro or the annoying music for a repair video!!!
    I can't believe some people thought this was a good repair video because this is not "fixing" anything!
    Bypassing the thermostat controller means that you no longer have temperature control, the compressor will never shut off, & your room will become like an ice box.
