I'm pretty sure that Russia took advantage of the situation by invading eastern Europe to create some sort of buffer zone between him and the last great powers that could possibly harm him over in western Europe and his plan backfired on him when the EU retaliated. Though if Russia just ends up annexing eastern Europe rather than setting up puppet states then yeah that would be cliche as shit.
