I've been asked to do shorts reviews for a half decade now, but have never really found a pair of shorts that I honestly like enough to review them. Well that changed this year with two pairs of shorts actually, the Vertx Cutback Shorts, and the Off The Grid Surplus Field Shorts. Great channel and informative reviews! I’ve been trying to find more pants/shorts w/ CCW in mind that fit more like Prana instead of baggy Dad pants. Really crazy you’re talking about shorts today because I literally just had the revelation today I need to find shorts I don’t hate. Stoked about the hats too as I’ve been wanting one for a year or so now. That OD Green one is sick, it’s like a flat bill but the bill isn’t flat. It’s 🔥 and I’ll be getting one!

All the shorts going down to the knee reminds me of the pedal pushers little gears used to wear. Goes well with the collared white T shirt under an open collar shirt.
My preference is shorts; they must be short enough to allow my beanbags to poke out the bottom so, they can experience the sights of the outdoors with me.

Thanks for this. I was really looking at some tactical shorts. Basic shorts just don't cut it as I'm extremely tactical and want everything tactical to fit my tactical personality.
I have said the same thing about the Vertx Delta Stretch pants being my favorite and have WISHED for long time they made a short variant…. I have dropped them a couple notes in hopes.. maybe you can be a INFLUENCER in reverse and see if you can persuade them to make something like this.. Love the content keep it coming…

Mike,have a look at the 5.11 Stryke shorts-I think you would like them.I wear them every day and they’re issued to us.Normally I would never wear issued pants or shorts off duty but these are bomber.I can carry my G43X and 3 spares,knife,Surefire Backup,and blowout kit and no one would be the wiser.Very comfortable.

I'd be curious your thoughts on the 5.11 Trail 9.5s. They have a really similar pocket layout to the Delta Stretch 2.1s and have a better front pocket cut than that Vertx shorts.

I pocket carry a G43, and it's always a challenge to find comfy synthetic stretchy shorts with good pockets for that. My best shorts to date are the 5.11 nylon patrol bike shorts, but it looks like they're hard to come by now in 2024 and have been replaced with strykers etc., so back to the drawing board.

I've resorted to cutting pants into shorts as well because I could never find the perfect ones to carry my gear like my favorite pants can, while still being long enough for my tastes. I've even gone as far as to take some to a seamstress to have them cut & hemmed into proper shorts. I'm glad Vertx offers those with a longer inseam. Although I'm a bit older than you, I'm not ready to let go of my longer shorts just yet. Perhaps it's PTSD from the shorts from the 80's. My generation had to fight hard as teens to get us all out of Magnum P.I / Gym teacher shorts!

Question, what side of your shorts do you put the larger/male side of the buckle on your Blue Alpha Gear ? I had an interesting experience with my Vertx cutback shorts. If I put the larger buckle, of the exact same belt, on my left side my clip on my holster sticks out like something crazy. However, when I flipped it and put the larger side on the right, the clip of the holster works like normal. And to note, both times I was using the same section of material (behind the smaller/female buckle) both times, just flipping the side that the male buckle is on.
Update: I do not have this problem at all with the Off The Grid shorts. My holster clip sits the exact same no matter what side the male buckle is on.

For a budget friendly pant like the last ones you showed check out Decathlon. Im over in Europe and picked a pair up that have stretch and fit great for around $25
Although not a tactical company, the Eddie Bauer First Ascent pants and shorts are my go-to. Flat zip cargo pockets so nothing sticks out and looks too “cargo-ey.”
Would the Vertx cutback shorts and pants be a good fit for more of an athletic or relaxed fit pants/jeans wearer? I am certainly not slim or straight at the hips and thighs. Thank you!

I wear the Vertx delta stretch pants and they are my favorite and so comfortable. So I also got the Vertx Cutback shorts. I want to love the shorts but they are so uncomfortable. The stitching inside the Waist line is so scratchy. It feels like when you burn thread and it melts the ends. I don’t know if this is how these shorts are or if I just got a bad pair.

I have a few pairs of vertx pants. They're nice. One of the pants I have, can't remember the name has the same small front pocket issue. It's not bad, but my knuckles get hung up on the edge of the pocket Everytime I have to pull my wallet or keys out of them.
Just a comment that you're not the only one with the hand in front pocket issue :)
I’ve been looking for a good pair of edc shorts. Most of them are 12-15 inseam. I like 7-8” inseam. I’ll grab a couple of these
Mountain headwear gear has good ones with shorter inseams as well.

They due run a little small so I'm a 32 usually but got them and put on and they felt like a 30 so I returned wich has taken weeks by the way but I got a 34 and think they will be perfect always frustrating when dealing with returns don't know why that is still hard they did pay for return shipping though.

Blackhawk Warrior Wear Contractor pants and shorts were the bomb back in the day. Its truly a shame they quit making that design. I switched over to 5.11 Stryke series, not quite the same but close. Vertx is too touristy looking for my taste.
Really like those Vertx shorts. And with the coupon it's a great deal. Too bad they don't ship to Canada. If anyone knows where to get these in Canada please chime in.

not a tactical short but the 686 shorts and pants have recently become my favorite, very similar pocket layout and features to the vertex shorts

I will be using my Phlster Enigma holster. Do you recommend a size up or are they stretchy enough to get normal size?
If its' a 1 inch width gun or larger, plus about 1/4 inches of kydex, I would size up. These shorts are stretchy, but not THAT stretchy. Hope that helps. I'm a 34 and wear a 36. I carry the P365 in the LLOD holster.

After receiving both, I like the Off Grid Field shorts a little better. Living in Texas, the material is a bit thinner. Because of the thinner material, they're lighter and more comfortable for Texas summer heat. Now, if they only offered more colors.

Well I fell behind in watching this video when you released it. Thank you for this. I have been eye balling the Vertx shorts. Unfortunately I just don't always agree with the photos Vertx has on their website. You introduced me to Vertx and I thank you for that. These are by far my fav. I have all the 2.0 Delta and 2.1. Although I will add the extra leather they added on their side pockets looks pretty nice however when you have a benchmade in one and an Olight in the other its kinda hard to get in.

I'm not a fan of the button closure; at least not the one offered by Vertx. That is a shame, because I love almost everything else about their pants and shorts. The opening for the button is too large and too flimsy. I appendix carry, and I often find that my button closure has become unfastened.

Think khaki and gray are pretty "gray man" colors. But if you're looking for jean shorts (jorts?), I'm not aware of any of those that are awesome, nor would I probably wear them, haha.
Agree completely man I'm currently searching for good pants and shorts that aren't just the basic khaki, grey and od green ... and that don't have a million pockets that I will never use , tactical clothes aren't my thing
@@ACYT298 I would say (and I don't mean this sarcastically or disrespectfully or anything) that if you're looking for shorts that don't have a bunch of functional pockets, and don't come in cool colors - there are about a billion brands out there making those.
@@LastLineOfDefense yep! Just adopt whatever you carry into your normal day. I used to wear wear Banana Republic pants or some other “slacks” 5+ days a week & just had to get used to carrying my edc with them. Just train with whatever you normally wear.
Tactical ... Shorts? In my day we had a running joke about what constitutes "tactical" or "mil spec". It originated from the field computer we were issued: design it in committee, paint it OD, add ten pounds, make it 20 percent slower than the comparable commercial product, get it built by the lowest bidder, and ironically enough double the end-price.

So on the vertx website, those shorts aren't even offered in any size less than 36" waist. That makes no sense.
